Qi Wei let out a soft laugh. “Of course not.”
“Well, that’s really a shame,” Nangong Zhe said lazily. “Then I guess I’ll just keep denying that I’m sick.”
“In that case, our conversation ends here. Mr. Nangong, goodbye.” Qi Wei gave a slight nod and started toward the stairwell.
Fengguang still hadn’t let go of his coat, trailing closely behind him. As they went down the stairs, she missed a step, but fortunately, Qi Wei reacted quickly and caught her before she could fall.
“Miss Xia, can’t you see where you’re going?”
Without the lights, the stairwell was even darker than the hallway, though it wasn’t completely pitch-black yet—there was still enough light to see a little.
Fengguang’s gaze shifted awkwardly for a moment before she said, “I’m a bit nearsighted…”
“Just nearsighted?”
“And… a little night-blind.”
Qi Wei chuckled. “That’s not a serious problem. Miss Xia, you don’t need to be so nervous.”
“I’m just worried… you might think something like this could be passed on to the next generation.” Her voice grew quieter and quieter until it was almost inaudible.
Luckily, Qi Wei had good hearing. He paused for a moment before saying, “Nearsightedness and night blindness can both be improved. You don’t need to worry.”
“Are you pretending not to understand, or do you really not get what I mean…” she muttered, still clutching his lab coat, nearly wrinkling it into a flower.
Qi Wei pretended not to hear her and said gently, “You haven’t had dinner yet, have you? I’ll take you to the cafeteria.”
“Oh…” she replied, sounding a bit listless.
He reached out and took hold of her hand—the same one that had been tugging at his coat—and said with mild resignation, “From here on, please just follow me properly, Miss Xia. Don’t trip again.”
“Okay!” She immediately brightened, smiling as she took his hand, completely different from her earlier dejected self.
…Holding his hand definitely felt better than grabbing his coat.
By the time they reached the second floor, the lights were on again. Apparently, the power system for the third floor and above was different from the one on the first and second floors, which explained why the upper levels were dark while the lower ones remained brightly lit.
Fengguang couldn’t help but think of Yao Xiaoxiao, who was locked on the third floor. She must be scared in that dark room… Maybe after dinner, she could go check on her?
Thinking of Yao Xiaoxiao reminded her of something important. “Doctor Qi, how are you planning to handle the new patient today?”
“Miss Yao?” A professional seriousness appeared in Qi Wei’s handsome features. “Tomorrow, I’ll examine her with the other doctors. If she does have a mental illness, we’ll determine the appropriate course of action based on its severity.”
“And what if she isn’t sick?”
“Then it becomes the director’s responsibility,” Qi Wei said. “My duty is to diagnose and care for patients. The more complicated interpersonal matters are handled personally by the director.”
“Is the director a good person?”
“Well…” He thought for a moment before smiling. “In most situations, the director is a good person.”
It was an ambiguous answer.
As if he could tell what she was thinking, he added kindly, “Miss Xia, this is Diamond Island. The island has its own rules. You should remember—whatever you do, you must act within your limits.”
