To save money, Ming Ming walked to and from the market. After buying everything, her arms were about to fall off. She had to stop every few blocks to rest.
“I’m exhausted,” she muttered. Just one more alley and she’d be home. She tried to hype herself up. “Let’s power through this!”
She had just picked up her bags again when—
“Ming Ming.”
The system suddenly popped up in her head, for once, calling her by name.
“Oh hey, you’re alive again?” she joked.
“Don’t go in!”
“What?”
She stopped in her tracks, confused, until she noticed a few men smoking at the end of the alley.
They saw her and immediately tossed their cigarettes to the ground, walking slowly in her direction.
“Hahaha,” she laughed nervously. “Littering is bad, you know.”
“They’re not here for me, right?” she said weakly.
“RUN!” the system roared in her head.
Ming Ming dropped her bags and bolted.
“STOP RIGHT THERE!”
The men shouted behind her as they gave chase.
“What the hell is going on?! All I did was turn down a sugar daddy offer—now they’re switching from sweet talk to brute force? Who are these people? Are all the rich folks in S City this shameless?!” Ming Ming hurled out question after question.
The system was still confused. “Sugar daddy offer? What are you talking about?”
“Are you for real right now?!”
There wasn’t time for the system to probe further—it quickly explained the current situation.
“I don’t know what you’re rambling about, but those guys chasing you? They’re debt collectors.”
“I’m in debt?!” Ming Ming gasped.
“Not you. Your dad.”
“I have to pay off my dad’s debts?” Ming Ming turned pale. “What kind of debt?”
The system replied bluntly: “Gambling debt. From loan sharks.”
“What the—&$#%@… You wait until now to tell me something this important?!”
She glanced back. “They don’t look like they’re just here to collect, though…”
“Correct. No bonus points,” the system quipped while helping her change direction to shake the pursuers. Even under pressure, it still had the nerve to joke.
“Your gambling-addict dad sold you off to pay his debts. They’re planning to force you into sex work to earn it back.”
“W-what??!”
“Not to be rude, but did the people designing this world study abroad in South Korea or something?” Ming Ming was nearly coughing up blood from running.
“According to the AI database, you’re giving them too little credit. These storylines? Your country invented them.”
“To hell with you and your database!”
Ming Ming was exhausted, but the people behind her just kept closing in.
What should she do?
Call the cops. Right! Call the police!
“Useless,” the system crushed her hopes. “Come on, have you ever seen a police rescue scene in a CEO romance story?”
“But the CEO only saves the female lead, not the cannon fodder like me!”
Still refusing to give up, Ming Ming frantically dialed 110 while sprinting. After two rings, the voice on the other end calmly told her:
“The number you dialed is not in service.”
“Seriously? Sir???”
Ming Ming froze in disbelief.
She looked up at the sky and screamed:
“What kind of messed-up worldbuilding is this?! You can strip away everything else, fine—but how dare you make the emergency number nonexistent?!”

Shi Lan (wide-eyed): “Aren’t you the guy who likes kicking heads like soccer balls? I wanna watch!”
Emperor (gently): “No, that’s too bloody for you. If you’re bored, I’ll build you a private palace.”
Shi Lan: “…Sounds okay.”
Later…
Shi Lan (blankly): “You’re calling this solid-gold birdcage a ‘palace’?”
Court officials (in tears): “Thank you, Your Highness! His Majesty hasn’t killed anyone in three months!”
Shi Lan (sitting in the cage, sighing): “What happened to being a seductive vixen who ruins nations?”

“Teach me.”

Shi Lan (hands on cheeks, sighing): “Oh no. Poor little me. So pitiful.”
System: “I swear to $#%&$…”
