Feng Guang asked, “How did you manage to escape?”
“It was this gentleman who saved me,” Xia Fengya replied, glancing at the dashing man beside her. Then she turned to Feng Guang and introduced him, “Elder sister, this is Mr. Shen Xu. Like Mu Liang, he is also a wandering swordsman.”
Feng Guang expressed her gratitude, “So it was Mr. Shen Xu who rescued my sister. Thank you for your help.”
“It was nothing,” Shen Xu said humbly, with a polite smile. “In the world of martial arts, it’s a common rule to draw one’s sword to help when encountering injustice. I just didn’t expect that the person I saved would turn out to be the Princess of Peace.” Then, with a slight bow, he corrected her, “Your Majesty, it’s Shen Xu, not ‘Kidney Deficiency.'”
Feng Guang ignored his correction and beckoned Fengya to come closer. Obediently, Fengya walked up to her. Holding her sister’s hand affectionately, Feng Guang said, “Fengya, you’ve suffered, but it’s a blessing you’ve returned safely. You don’t look well—are you hurt? Should I summon the royal physician to examine you?”
“No need, elder sister. I was poisoned.”
“What? Then we must summon the royal physician immediately!”
“There’s no need to worry, elder sister. The poison has already been neutralized.”
Feigning ignorance, Feng Guang asked, “Neutralized? What happened?”
Fengya slowly explained, “The man in black tried to use poison to control me and force me to hand over our army’s formation plans. But while he was asleep, I stole the antidote from him. Later, Mr. Shen rescued me.”
Stole? More like he deliberately pretended to sleep so you could take the antidote, Feng Guang thought but kept to herself. She had always been a good listener and knew when to keep quiet.
Sure enough, Fengya continued with an even more surprising revelation. “I suspect the poison he gave me is the same one he used on our soldiers. So, I only took half of the antidote and saved the other half. Elder sister, you should have the royal physician examine it to identify the ingredients and see if they can create a matching antidote.”
Out of the corner of her eye, Feng Guang noticed Shen Xu’s expression freeze momentarily. She guessed that the second prince of Longtao Kingdom had no idea Fengya had kept part of the antidote.
Feeling pleased, Feng Guang gently patted Fengya’s head and said, “Fengya, you’ve endured so much. Once the soldiers are cured, you’ll be the greatest hero of Dongyun Kingdom.”
The Princess of Peace’s reputation would grow, stabilizing public opinion. If Fengya ever decided to compete for the throne, her chances would improve significantly.
Yet Feng Guang wasn’t worried; instead, she felt a twinge of melancholy. In her eyes, Fengya had no desire for the throne. For 15 years, Feng Guang had indulged her sister’s every request. They never fought or competed. To Fengya, Feng Guang might have been a slightly inept ruler, but she was still a good sister. Fengya wasn’t some power-hungry, ungrateful schemer—she’d have to be utterly bored to think about vying for the throne.
At this moment, Gu Yan spoke up, “May I ask where Mr. Kidney Deficiency hails from?”
“A wanderer of the martial world, with no fixed home,” Shen Xu replied before adding, “Your Highness, it’s Shen Xu.”
Gu Yan ignored the correction entirely. “Does Mr. Kidney Deficiency know who I am?”
“I’ve heard of you,” Shen Xu replied tactfully. “The Emperor holds Prince Qian in high regard. Where the Emperor is, the Prince is never far. Seeing you by Her Majesty’s side, I could only assume.” After finishing, he added once more, “Your Highness, my name is Shen Xu.”
He silently hoped people would stop calling him “Kidney Deficiency.” While he appeared unfazed, if the nickname stuck, what would happen if people genuinely started believing it?
Feng Guang, however, couldn’t help but wonder: Had word of her fondness for teasing Gu Yan spread to enemy territories?
