Just the thought of Su Xu liking Gu Yan and the fact that she wasn’t by his side made Feng Guang grind her teeth in frustration. As midnight approached, she tossed and turned in bed, unable to sleep. Being under house arrest these past few days, she had rarely been able to sleep soundly, always fearing the sudden news of something happening to Gu Yan.
As she worried about whether Su Xu, that fortune-teller, might use her position to take advantage of Gu Yan, she heard a faint noise coming from the window. Listening carefully for a moment, she confirmed it wasn’t her imagination. Throwing off her blanket, she got out of bed and approached the window. After some hesitation, she opened it.
Two figures leaped in through the window. Before Feng Guang could let out a sound, her mouth was quickly covered.
“Shhh,” Xia Fengya whispered. “Elder Sister, stay quiet. Don’t let the guards outside hear us.”
Feng Guang nodded, and only then did Xia Fengya remove her hand. “What are you two doing here?” Feng Guang asked.
The person accompanying Xia Fengya was none other than Mu Liang.
Mu Liang answered, “We received a message from the Duke of Zhen. He said we need to get you out first so he can deal with Qian Qiu without any concerns.”
“The Duke of Zhen?”
“Yes, Elder Sister,” Xia Fengya said. “Lan Tingrong has already stationed his army outside the city gates. Once we get you out, he’ll coordinate with the Duke of Zhen from inside and catch Qian Qiu off guard.”
Feng Guang still didn’t fully understand. “Are you sure it was the Duke of Zhen who sent you this message?”
Mu Liang nodded. “It was. Why?”
Something didn’t feel right. Lan Gan valued Lan Tingyu’s life so much that he even struck a deal with Qian Qiu to protect him. Why would he suddenly turn around and help Fengya rescue her? Feng Guang couldn’t figure it out. Had Lan Tingyu’s poison already been cured, or had Lan Gan decided he was willing to sacrifice him?
“Elder Sister, what are you thinking about? Let’s go already,” Xia Fengya urged, pulling Feng Guang’s hand.
“I can’t leave,” Feng Guang said, shaking her head.
Fengya was confused. “Why not? Qian Qiu is ruthless. Who knows when he might decide to kill you?”
Mu Liang added, “This isn’t the time for bravery. Do you have any idea how many people would die if it came to a coup?”
Feng Guang patted his shoulder approvingly. “Mu Liang, not bad. You even know about palace coups.”
Mu Liang swatted her hand away in annoyance. “Don’t think I’m an idiot. I may roam the martial world, but I have basic common sense. A palace coup is no different from a power struggle in the martial world. It’s all a bloody path paved by selfish desires.”
“Mu Liang… I didn’t know you could say something so serious,” Xia Fengya remarked, genuinely surprised.
Mu Liang felt exasperated. “Why do you both treat me like I’m some brainless fool?”
Truth be told, they did think of him as a bit of a fool. But, as the saying goes, love makes the fool charming, and Xia Fengya finds this trait endearing. She certainly didn’t hold it against him.
But this wasn’t the time to debate Mu Liang’s intelligence. The real issue was getting Feng Guang out of there.
“Elder Sister, why won’t you leave?” Fengya asked again.
“If I leave, Gu Yan will be in danger,” Feng Guang said stubbornly. “I can’t abandon him.”
“Elder Sister, I think you’re in more danger than he is right now,” Xia Fengya argued. She recalled how Gu Yan had treated her a year ago and had a strong instinct: a man like Gu Yan would never let himself be in danger.
“Gu Yan, he…” Feng Guang began, but before she could finish her sentence, she felt a sharp pain in her neck and lost consciousness.
Xia Fengya quickly caught her before she fell to the ground and glared at Mu Liang. “What are you doing?!”
“Did you forget what the last line of the letter said?”
The letter’s last line read: If the Emperor refuses to leave, knock her out and take her by force.
