Feng Guang said, “I’m touched.”
But there wasn’t the slightest hint of emotion on her face.
Sun Yidao snorted.
Xue Ran sighed, “Senior, we’ve known each other for many years. Fine, I’m willing to make a trip to Bashu. But Miss Xia still needs daily acupuncture for the poison in her body. If I leave the valley, then Miss Xia…”
“No problem, no problem!” Feng Guang quickly interrupted. “I’d be glad to go with you. Saving a life is worth more than building a seven-story pagoda! Besides, I’ve never been to Bashu. I’ve heard it’s full of bamboo, beautiful scenery, and delicious food. Dr. Xue, please take me along.”
This time, Sun Yidao looked at her with new respect. “Who would have thought this little girl had a compassionate heart, even if she’s just chasing a man…”
“Cough, cough!” Feng Guang cut him off with a loud cough. “Everyone already knows about my compassionate heart, so there’s no need to mention it again.”
Her gaze warned Sun Yidao: if you dare expose me, I’ll make such a fuss that Xue Ran won’t be able to go!
Sun Yidao muttered under his breath, stroking his beard, and said no more.
And so, it was settled that Xue Ran would journey to Bashu.
The next morning at the entrance of the Old Friends Valley, the only one there to see them off was Sun Yidao. Feng Guang’s poison required daily medicine and acupuncture, but Qingyu, being inexperienced, hadn’t yet mastered the art of acupuncture. Xue Ran couldn’t risk letting him do it, as an incorrectly placed needle could cause more trouble. Otherwise, he would have left Feng Guang and Qingyu in the valley instead of taking them along.
Just as they were about to depart, a young man with a sword at his waist emerged from the valley. He respectfully told Xue Ran, “Mr. Xue, the Valley Master sent me to see you off. May you have a safe journey and a quick return.”
“Thank the Valley Master for his concern, and please convey my gratitude.”
“Yes, safe travels, sir.”
With Xue Ran’s support, Feng Guang got into the carriage. Qingyu took the reins outside, and soon the carriage began to roll forward.
Seated comfortably in the carriage, Feng Guang propped her chin on her hand and gazed at Xue Ran, who was sitting across from her. With her current appearance, her only redeeming feature might be her clear, bright eyes.
Xue Ran closed his book and smiled faintly. “Miss Xia?”
“Hmm?” She tilted her head slightly, savoring his deep, gentle voice. She had to admit, that the way he said her name sounded delightful.
“Why are you staring at me?” His tone was calm, but her gaze was so intense that it was hard to ignore.
Feng Guang replied confidently, “Because you’re good-looking.”
He didn’t expect her to be so straightforward, and his expression showed a hint of surprise. “It’s only appearance. In a hundred years, it will turn to dust.”
“Which is exactly why it should be appreciated now while it’s still beautiful, right? As they say, everyone has a love for beauty. It’s only natural to be drawn to beautiful things. That’s why I’m staring at you. I find you attractive, and I can’t help but look. If it were someone else, even if they begged, I wouldn’t be interested.”
The way she said it made it sound like he should consider himself lucky to have her attention.
Xue Ran had lived in the valley for years, and even within it, he rarely interacted with others. People always spoke of him as someone refined and otherworldly, untouched by the mundane, but in truth, he simply didn’t know how to engage with people.
Whenever others saw him, they’d cry out, “Divine Doctor, save me!” Their cries and pleas made him uncomfortable, and he realized that, no matter what he said, they’d keep sobbing. Eventually, he avoided talking to people and disliked going out. Later, he heard that people in the martial world had given him the title “Saint of Medicine and Poison” because he’d once used a poison-based remedy.
People said the Saint of Medicine and Poison was reclusive and that meeting him was harder than ascending to heaven. But the real reason was simply that he dreaded dealing with those sobbing, pleading faces.
So when Feng Guang bluntly called him “good-looking,” his ears turned a little red. He knew that when he occasionally left the valley, some women would steal glances at him, but none had ever told him to his face that he was attractive.
