Xue Ran said, “If Miss Xia enjoys tea, I’ll have Qingyu prepare some of the finest leaves.”
Her naturally cute personality was endearing, but sometimes too much of it wasn’t ideal. Feng Guang sighed heavily, realizing the challenge ahead if she hoped to win him over.
Just then, a hearty laugh echoed from the trees. “Hahahaha! Xue Ran, you’re still as slow-witted as ever!”
An elderly man in ragged clothes jumped down from the tree, pointing at Feng Guang and laughing. “You cheeky little girl, no shame at all!”
“Who are you?” Feng Guang demanded, hands on her hips.
“Ha! If I told you, you’d be scared stiff!”
“Oh? Then tell me and let’s see if you can scare me,” she retorted.
The old man struck a dignified pose. “I am none other than Sun Yidao, the greatest swordsman in all the land as recorded in the Legendary Chronicles!”
He waited for her awestruck reaction, but instead, he was met with laughter.
“Hahaha! The greatest scoundrel in the land!”
Sun Yidao stomped his foot in anger. “I told them that title didn’t sound right, but Baixiao insisted on writing ‘greatest swordsman’ in the chronicles. Stop laughing, girl!”
Xue Ran’s eyes gleamed with amusement. “Miss Xia, Senior Sun is indeed a master swordsman, undefeated in his prime.”
“So, he is the greatest scoundrel?” she quipped.
Sun Yidao grumbled, “This brat is insufferable! Yueyue was much nicer! Xue Ran, where did you find this girl? Go bring back Yueyue!”
“Senior Sun, Miss Xia is the daughter of the leader of Folding Sword Tower, so please be respectful.”
“Folding Sword Tower? Hmph, just a minor weapons stockpile. Even her father has to respectfully call me ‘senior’ when he sees me.”
Feng Guang scoffed. “True, but it still sounds better than being the ‘greatest swordsman’.”
“Why, you little—”
“Senior,” Xue Ran intervened before the bickering escalated. “Did you come here for something?”
“Ah, yes! I nearly forgot!” Sun Yidao turned to Xue Ran, all seriousness. “Xue Ran, I need to ask you to heal someone.”
“Senior, you know my rules,” Xue Ran replied calmly. He rarely left his valley and didn’t heal just anyone.
“I know your rules, but I still want to beg you to help. Even if you take my old life in exchange, I won’t mind,” Sun Yidao said, scratching his head. Though eccentric, he rarely lowered himself to beg, holding onto his pride as a master.
Xue Ran pondered. “Who could be so important as to bring Senior here to plead?”
“The Tang family of Bashu, Madam Tang’s grandson, Tang Jiuge.”
Feng Guang laughed. “Tang ‘Lying Down’?”
Sun Yidao shot her a glare. “No one asked you to speak!”
“Let me guess… you’d give up your life for him—he’s your grandson, isn’t he?”
“What nonsense are you talking about? Tang Jiuge is the dear grandson of Tang Fan. If he heard you calling him ‘Lying Down,’ he’d crawl out of his grave to hit me!”
“Oh… so Madam Tang was your first love?” Feng Guang teased.
Sun Yidao’s face flushed and then paled as he struggled to respond.
“So she was your first love!” Feng Guang burst into laughter, realizing her random guess had hit the mark.
Sun Yidao, seeing the conversation shift to his old affairs, quickly looked at Xue Ran. “I owe the Tang family a debt from long ago. That’s why, now that Tang Jiuge is in trouble, I’m lowering myself to ask for your help. I know you prefer to stay away from worldly matters, but I don’t know anyone else I can rely on.”
