For a while, the news on television was dominated by reports of the wealthy businessman Meng Fei dying in a gunfight. In comparison, the news of a police officer’s suicide seemed insignificant.
Li Bi died the day after Meng Fei’s death. He took sleeping pills and committed suicide at home, still clutching a ring tightly in his hand. It was as if he were holding onto his only treasure, and no one could pry it from his grip… His funeral was on a rainy day, attended by very few people. An Tong went and placed a bouquet on Li Bi’s gravestone.
He didn’t let Feng Guang know about Li Bi’s death.
Time passed, yet An Tong still remembered that night. He stood by the window, still secretly watching the young girl’s every move.
His little girl was working hard to dig up the lifeless body from the ground. He had imagined she might be so scared that she would collapse or run home in a panic to call the police, but he never expected that after her initial shock, she would carry the body and bury it beneath that banyan tree.
An Tong had often played there as a child. He remembered the swing, which his mother had installed for him—over a decade ago, it seemed.
Through the camera lens, he watched her sweat profusely and noticed her white face getting smeared with dirt. She was clumsy with her movements, ill-suited for physical labor… But An Tong held his chest, feeling his heart race for the first time, as if he needed to grasp something to fill the emptiness within.
He drew the curtains, leaning against the wall and taking deep breaths to suppress the urge to confine her.
She was maddeningly charming, no matter when.
“Stop staring at me like that,” Feng Guang said softly, brushing her hand against his under the table, but he caught her wrist in a firm grip. She nervously glanced at her parents across the table, trying to act nonchalant.
When alone, she was adorably bold, but around her elders, she became shy and endearing.
“Happy birthday, Father-in-law,” An Tong said with a polite and friendly smile toward Xia Zhao. Despite Xia Zhao’s consistent cold demeanor toward him, An Tong maintained his calm and graceful exterior. However, beneath the table, he gently stroked Feng Guang’s hand, which was dangerously close to slipping under her skirt.
He didn’t know how… how to say it… Well, facing her, he just couldn’t find the words “lewd” or “perverse.” Seeing him so focused and serious, Feng Guang thought it was a shame he didn’t pursue a career in acting!
After a long pause without a response from Xia Zhao, Wang Ci smiled and interjected, “Birthdays come every year; it’s not a big deal. An Tong, next time, don’t prepare such heavy gifts.”
As the saying goes, the more the mother-in-law looks at the son-in-law, the more satisfied she becomes. Initially opposed to Feng Guang being with An Tong, both Wang Ci and Xia Zhao were on the same side. However, it was Wang Ci who had been the first to relent, for which Xia Zhao had given her a fair amount of cold treatment.
Wang Ci still didn’t understand Xia Zhao’s physiological dislike for An Tong. Did An Tong treat Feng Guang badly? Over three years of marriage, just look at how he pampered her! Feng Guang, the young lady, hadn’t become any less spoiled; if anything, she had grown even more delicate. This was entirely due to An Tong’s unwavering devotion. Wang Ci could guarantee that even she and Xia Zhao had never been as accommodating. Their affection for their daughter had principles, unlike An Tong’s, which was simply about making Feng Guang happy.
Wang Ci had once said not to spoil Feng Guang too much, but An Tong just smiled and continued to treat her like a treasure.
Was An Tong unfilial? This year, he gifted Xia Zhao an island for her birthday, saying it was a place for her to unwind and vacation… He brought gifts for every holiday, each one heavier than the last. Wang Ci considered him a thoughtful young man, but Xia Zhao had always viewed him as a potential kidnapper.
However, marriage was between two people, and no matter how dissatisfied Xia Zhao was, it didn’t matter.
The three of them intentionally ignored the sulking Xia Zhao. Wang Ci looked at her daughter, worry evident in her eyes. “Have the hospital reports come out yet?”
Hearing this question, Xia Zhao momentarily forgot her anger and sat up straight.
“The doctor said to get the report today.” Feng Guang’s expression was downcast.
Her marriage to An Tong could be described as perfect in every way, except for one thing: over the past three years, her belly had never shown any signs of life. Despite not taking any protective measures, she just couldn’t get pregnant. First, An Tong had gotten tested; his health was fine. Then she went for her examination, and her mood was understandably terrible at this moment.
“Feng Guang, don’t think about unnecessary things,” An Tong said, gently patting her head. “You need to eat more to keep your spirits up. You’ve lost weight lately.”
“Oh…” She glanced at him, aware that his unspoken message was that holding her hand was less satisfying now.
An Tong didn’t care about having children, but Wang Ci found it difficult to say anything.
After lunch, An Tong and Feng Guang went to the hospital, where Feng Guang was checked by An Tong’s senior, Fu Yan, a responsible doctor.
“Mrs. An, your test results show that besides a thin uterine lining, there are no other issues. However, this is one of the reasons why conceiving may be difficult.” Fu Yan stated objectively before displaying a look of sympathy.
Feng Guang held the report, too afraid to look up at An Tong. Although she had prepared herself for the possibility of health issues, when the moment arrived, feeling sad was secondary; the main feeling was guilt toward her husband.
An Tong glanced at Fu Yan.
Fu Yan quickly cleared her throat. “You two should talk; I’ll step out for a moment.”
This was supposed to be her office…
Once the outsider left, An Tong pulled Feng Guang into his arms and gently asked, “Are you unhappy?”
“Mm…” she mumbled, “I can’t have children; will you leave me?”
Hearing her voice quiver made him uneasy. He lifted her chin, and sure enough, tears glistened at the corners of her eyes. He leaned down and kissed her. “I’ve never released any information; you are more important to me than anyone else.”
“But it’s about the child…”
“Shh—” An Tong pressed his finger against her lips. “In this world, besides you, everyone else can be summed up as ‘other people’ to me.”
He stubbornly referred to the nonexistent child, which would carry his blood, as another person. A peculiar feeling stirred within Feng Guang. “An Tong, don’t you like children?”
“It’s not that I don’t like them; I just don’t see the need. My time and energy are entirely spent on pampering you, so having you is enough.”
Feng Guang took this as a heartfelt comfort, burying her head in his chest. “If… if you don’t want me anymore, I wouldn’t blame you…”
“Such a silly girl! How could I ever not want you?” He kissed the top of her head with utmost tenderness.
This extreme affection inadvertently revealed a hint of something sinister, but Feng Guang remained oblivious to it.
