Qi Wei led Fengguang back to the sofa, then went into his room to get the medical kit. Fengguang stared at the small cut on the back of her hand and couldn’t help replaying what had just happened in her mind. As she lowered her gaze, she caught sight of a phone lying on the sofa—it was Jin Guoguo’s.
“To prevent infection, it’s better to bandage it.”
Hearing Qi Wei coming out of the room, she instinctively grabbed the phone and hid it in her bag. Then she sat still, as if nothing had happened, watching him walk over.
Qi Wei sat down beside her. Seeing how pale she looked, he sighed and gently placed a hand on her cheek. “Don’t worry. I’ll take care of everything. You don’t need to stress about it.”
“You don’t understand…” Her clenched hands were still trembling. “She was just talking to me like everything was fine… and then… then she jumped right in front of me. Maybe—maybe if I had been just a little faster, I could’ve stopped her. She didn’t have to die…”
It was a very typical kind of guilt, like when someone gets hit by a car right in front of you, and you can’t help but think that if you’d reacted faster, maybe you could have prevented it.
“This isn’t your fault.” Qi Wei took her hand and gently pried open her fist, where her nails had dug into her palm. “None of us can predict the future. We don’t know what’s going to happen next. Nurse Jin’s fall was caused by her own emotional state—it wasn’t because of you.”
“She… I mean Nurse Jin… why did she call me ‘Xiao Jia’? Who is Xiao Jia?”
“As far as I know, Xiao Jia was a friend of hers. Something happened later… maybe that’s why her emotions became unstable.” As he carefully cleaned the wound on her hand, he continued, “She developed depression because of it. After treatment, she seemed to recover, so the director allowed her to return to work.”
“Do I… look like that, Xiao Jia?”
“I’m not sure.” Qi Wei looked up and smiled faintly. “I’ve never met her. But Nurse Jin tends to develop an excessive fondness for pretty women. So maybe Xiao Jia was very beautiful too.”
“Doctor…”
“Hmm?” He looked at her, the faint smile in his eyes almost intoxicating.
She asked blankly, “Why… can you still smile so gently when someone you know just died?”
“But I can’t cry, either.” He gently patted her head, his eyes deep as he spoke softly. “Nurse Jin and I were nothing more than acquaintances who had met a few times and knew each other’s names.”
“She seemed to like you…”
He let out a small laugh before replying, “Did she?”
Just two simple words, completely devoid of emotion—exactly how one would speak about a stranger.
Fengguang told herself this was a normal reaction. If she heard that a stranger liked her and then died, she probably wouldn’t show much emotion either.
And yet, she felt afraid.
A strange, unexplainable fear.
“Dr. Qi…”
“What is it now?” he asked softly, carefully placing gauze over her wound, just as attentive as when he had treated her burn before.
