The first to voice doubt were the two men escorting Yao Xiaoxiao. The taller one asked, “Director, is what you’re saying true?”
It wasn’t just him—everyone present found it hard to believe. After all, something as bizarre as a ship’s captain running off with the boat had never happened before.
Zhang Huai was still catching his breath, clearly having rushed over without stopping. “Why would I lie to you? The ship is already gone!”
Fengguang immediately ran to the window. From there, she could see the shoreline—but there wasn’t a single vessel at the dock. Her first instinct was to pull out her phone and make a call.
A man gently reminded her, “Miss Xia, there’s no signal on this island.”
“What?” Fengguang glanced at Qi Wei, then down at her phone. Sure enough, there wasn’t even a single bar of reception. Stiffly, she asked him, “There… is internet on this island, right?”
“There is.”
Fengguang let out a sigh of relief.
Qi Wei smiled. “How could there be? This is a place without even a signal.”
Fengguang’s eye twitched. “Are you messing with me?”
“Miss Xia, you misunderstand. I’m just trying to lighten the mood.” Qi Wei said kindly, “The ship is gone, but you don’t need to be too anxious.”
“There’s only one ship that comes here each year. Now that it’s gone, am I supposed to stay here for a whole year?”
Qi Wei replied patiently, “Once your family realizes you haven’t returned, they’ll naturally come looking for you.”
“That actually makes sense…” Fengguang suddenly relaxed. In theory, the ship that brought them to Diamond Island would have returned that same night. If her parents saw she hadn’t come back, they would definitely come looking for her.
“Director,” Qi Wei turned to Zhang Huai at the doorway, “it seems we’ll need to have these guests stay a few more days.”
“Doctor Qi is right. I’ll arrange rooms for everyone,” Zhang Huai nodded and left, presumably to make the arrangements.
Only then did Qi Wei turn his attention to the group at the door—more precisely, one bound woman and the two men who had tied her up. “And you are?”
“I’m Zheng Gao, and this is my younger brother, Zheng Fei,” said the taller man in black. “This patient is Yao Xiaoxiao. She has severe delusions and has even killed someone. We were told by the director to hand her over to you.”
“A delusional patient who’s committed murder?” Qi Wei smiled. “Sorry, but I never jump to conclusions about a patient before examining them myself.”
Zheng Fei said, “Doctor Qi, this is someone Mr. Yao asked us to deliver.”
“Mr. Yao? Is he one of my former patients?”
Fengguang couldn’t help but laugh.
Zheng Fei’s expression darkened. “Doctor Qi, watch your words. How could Mr. Yao possibly be your patient?”
“Exactly,” Fengguang said leisurely, adding fuel to the fire. “Trying to use the Yao family’s name to pressure people—you’re really overestimating their influence.”
At that, even the more composed Zheng Gao’s expression stiffened. If Qi Wei spoke disrespectfully about Mr. Yao, they could still criticize this insignificant doctor—but if it involved the Xia family… they had no standing to argue. In the Xia family’s eyes, the Yao family was nothing more than a small business.
The atmosphere felt slightly tense. Qi Wei smiled faintly and said, “Of course, I wouldn’t casually refuse to accept a patient. Besides, now that the ship is gone, you have no way to leave, do you?”
