Time always passes quickly. Before anyone realized it, winter had arrived.

During this time, Consort Yun didn’t come looking for trouble with Xian Mo again. The Prime Minister submitted a memorial suggesting that the eldest prince—who had no mother—be placed under the Empress’s care. Since the Empress had no children of her own, it seemed only natural for her to raise him. However, before the Emperor could respond, the Empress spoke first. Citing poor health and her inability to properly care for the eldest prince, she instead suggested that he be placed under Consort An.

The Prime Minister was so furious he was practically fuming, but Xian Rang let out a sigh of relief and promptly assigned the eldest prince to Consort An.

The Empress wasn’t actually in poor health—she was pregnant.

And yet, Xian Rang had never once visited her chambers. By all logic, she couldn’t possibly be pregnant. But the truth was, she was.

Only Fengguang knew about this.

Looking at Rong Tingxue’s slightly rounded belly, Fengguang fell into a long silence. It was New Year’s Day, and she had only come to the usually quiet Fengyi Palace on a whim. But what she saw left her stunned.

Rong Tingxue, however, appeared completely at ease. “I’m just pregnant—it’s not like I’ve turned ugly. Why are you staring at me like that?”

“You cheated on him.”

“Well, obviously.” Rong Tingxue raised an eyebrow. “I don’t like Xian Rang, and he doesn’t like me either. Wasn’t it only a matter of time before I found someone else?”

Fengguang had never seen anyone speak so casually about infidelity. After a pause, she said, “Who on earth would dare put a cuckold’s horns on the old emperor?”

“Take a guess,” Rong Tingxue replied with a smile.

Fengguang’s social circle was small—she simply couldn’t guess. The only men who could enter the inner palace were the imperial guards, but she didn’t know any of them.

Rong Tingxue only smiled and refused to say another word.

As Fengguang was leaving, she heard Rong Tingxue say from behind her, “Consort An is a good person. Under her care, the eldest prince won’t be mistreated.”

“I know. Thank you,” Fengguang replied sincerely before leaving Fengyi Palace.

Rong Tingxue always gave her a strange feeling—almost like… familiarity? But at the same time, she was like the wind: impossible to grasp or fully understand. Still, Fengguang had a gut feeling that she wouldn’t harm her.

After returning to Yihe Palace, Fengguang searched around and finally found Xian Mo in the study. She drifted over and saw him holding a book, reading a passage about how the Abyss of Ten Thousand Poisons was the place where the most spiritual herbs and plants grew—though it was also filled with endless danger.

Her eyelid twitched, and she slapped the book out of his hands.

Xian Mo paused. “Fengguang, you’re back.”

“A’Mo, I’m warning you—no matter what, you are not allowed to go to a place like the Abyss of Ten Thousand Poisons.”

Xian Mo nodded obediently. “Alright, I won’t go.”

Still not reassured, she pressed on, “Swear it. Swear you won’t go there.”

“I swear. If I go, then I’ll never—”

“Stop!” Fengguang covered his mouth, cutting him off irritably. “You’re going to live a long life. Don’t say things about dying.”

He smiled softly. “Alright.”

Fengguang lowered her hand, then lectured him in a serious tone, “Curiosity is something you shouldn’t have too much of. A dangerous place—once you go, chances are you won’t come back.”

“I understand.”

She huffed. “Good. As long as you understand.”
