Zhang Xu’s face turned pale, then flushed, but he didn’t dare say a word.
Rong Tingxue left gracefully. Feng Guang tugged on Xian Mo’s hand. “Let’s go back too.”
“Mm.” He nodded and walked past Zhang Xu without a second glance.
Feng Guang felt sorry for him—he had just finished being punished under the sun and hadn’t even had a chance to rest before being blocked for so long. She let go of his hand, floated in front of him, and placed both hands against his face.
“Do you feel uncomfortable at all?”
“I’m fine.” He didn’t stop walking, but there was a hint of warmth in his gaze. “Don’t worry.”
“You always say ‘don’t worry,’ but even if something were wrong, you wouldn’t say it.” She sighed. “How did you end up becoming such a closed-off person?”
Then she paused.
Actually… he had always been like this.
Xian Mo didn’t respond right away. After a moment, he said, “The Empress can see you.”
“Yeah… she can.”
“I can’t.” Xian Mo lowered his gaze. “I can’t see you.”
She comforted him, “It’s okay if you can’t. I’m still right here with you, aren’t I?”
“Why can the Empress see you?”
“Well…” Feng Guang hesitated. “I don’t know either. I just know that Her Majesty is very mysterious—but she’s not a bad person.”
When she had seen Zhuo Yun bringing people to block Xian Mo earlier, she hadn’t had time to think. She had rushed to find the Empress for help. She hadn’t been sure whether Rong Tingxue would actually assist her—but in the end, she had come.
Xian Mo didn’t say anything more.
After returning to Yi He Palace, he didn’t rest for long before his tutor arrived. The teacher was an elderly man well past fifty, said to have once been a third-place scholar in the imperial examinations.
The old scholar was rather pedantic. Aside from teaching Xian Mo calligraphy, he mostly lectured about loyalty to the country and sacrificing everything for it.
Feng Guang was worried Xian Mo might be influenced, so she kept whispering beside him, “Don’t listen to him. Being loyal to the country doesn’t mean throwing your life away. If you ever go to the battlefield, you’re not allowed to just charge forward recklessly.”
He nodded silently. His brush moved steadily across the paper, writing two large characters.
The old tutor, after assigning calligraphy practice, had already leaned against the wall and fallen asleep.
Page after page, Xian Mo wrote the same two characters over and over—
Feng Guang.
Her name.
After watching for a while, Feng Guang couldn’t help but feel a little embarrassed. She poked his cheek. “Okay, I know my name sounds nice, but you don’t have to keep writing it like this.”
“If I don’t write your name, I don’t know what else to write.”
“You could write your own name too. Or your master’s—General Lan’s.”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Without even looking up, he replied, “I’d fall asleep.”
After a while, he noticed the silence.
“Feng Guang, are you still here?”
“I am.”
Only then did his expression soften. He continued writing, his brush moving steadily across the page.
“As long as you’re here, it’s enough. Don’t let me stop hearing your voice.”
“Mm…” She cupped her face in her hands, thinking that if she still had a physical body, she would definitely be blushing.
By dusk, the old tutor took his leave. What followed was Xian Mo’s own time.
He didn’t rush to rest. Instead, he carried a bucket of water out into the courtyard, where a willow tree had been transplanted not long ago.
Watering the tree was something he always did himself. The servants were not allowed to touch it.
Feng Guang sat up in the tree, smiling as she watched him water it, her heart feeling warm and at ease.
