Fireworks suddenly burst outside. Fengguang sneaked a glance at Xian Mo’s expression, but seeing that he showed none of the usual excitement of a child, she sighed again. Every other palace was lively and festive—if there was any place that lacked a New Year’s atmosphere, aside from Fengyi Palace, it was here.
And Xian Mo had never behaved like an ordinary child.
Fengguang suddenly said, “I want to go watch the fireworks. Come with me.”
“Okay.” To her requests, he always gave the same answer.
As they stepped outside, the air was noticeably colder. Fengguang took out a hand warmer and tossed it to him. “Even though I asked you to come out with me, I don’t want you freezing.”
“I’m not cold.” Even so, he didn’t throw it away. Looking up at the flickering fireworks in the sky, he asked softly, “Do you like fireworks, Fengguang?”
“Well… they’re nice to see once in a while.” She smiled. “Fireworks are only set off during happy occasions. And if you have someone by your side to watch them with, that’s even better.”
For something so fleeting, she didn’t exactly dislike it—but she couldn’t say she liked it much either. If she did like it, it was more for what it represented than anything else.
Xian Mo said quietly, “Then I’ll watch fireworks with you every year.”
“Sounds good.” Fengguang tilted her head with a smile. As the colorful bursts lit up his face, she suddenly sighed with emotion. “Our A’Mo is going to grow into a very handsome man someday.”
“When I practice martial arts with my master, I make sure to protect my face.”
Hearing his serious reply, Fengguang paused for a second before laughing. “Well, that’s even better.”
“I remember everything you’ve told me.”
She thought about it—she really had told him before to take care of himself, not to get hurt, and not to leave scars. She hadn’t expected him to still remember it. “A’Mo… actually, it’s okay for you to be a little willful sometimes. After all, you’re still a child.”
“I’m not a child.” He frowned. “After the New Year, I’ll be thirteen. I’ll be an adult soon.”
“Alright, you’re not a child anymore. What I mean is, you don’t have to push yourself so hard all the time. It’s okay to relax once in a while, alright?” During these days, she had been by his side. Even today, on New Year’s Day, he had gotten up around five in the morning to practice his sword—despite Lan Zhao saying it was a day off and he didn’t need to wake up so early.
Whether it was determination or self-discipline, Fengguang truly felt she couldn’t compare to him. Even most adults couldn’t hold themselves to such standards—but he could.
Xian Mo said, “I want to become stronger.”
She reached out and gently patted his head, but couldn’t find any words to reply.
As the fireworks ended, a commotion rose from outside the palace walls.
Fengguang frowned. “What’s going on out there?”
“Let’s go take a look.” Seeing her curiosity, Xian Mo spoke first and headed down the steps toward the palace gate.
Fengguang followed quietly by his side. Once they stepped out of Yihe Palace, they saw flames blazing in the distance.
Xian Mo stopped a passing eunuch. “What happened?”
“Reporting to the Eldest Prince—Fengyi Palace has caught fire! Everyone is rushing to put it out!”
“Go.”
“Yes!” The eunuch hurried off.
Fengguang stared at the flames in the distance, a strange unease rising in her chest.
