Feng Guang stood frozen for a long time before she dared to turn around. The man standing by the riverbank was handsome and elegant, so perfect it seemed as if he had stepped out of a painting. But she didn’t dare move. She stared wide-eyed, afraid that this was just a fragile illusion. She hesitated, unsure. “An… An Tong?”

“Feng Guang, it’s me.” An Tong extended his hand from the shore, calling softly, “Come here.”

She stared at him blankly for a moment before finally swimming to the shore and grabbing his outstretched hand. An Tong tightened his grip and pulled her up. Her entire body was soaked, her jet-black hair clinging to her cheeks. The dark contrast made her snow-white skin even more striking. Tears mingled with the water on her face. She was a proud young lady, and yet, here she was, looking utterly disheveled.

But no—she didn’t look disheveled at all.

An Tong’s fingers gently brushed the droplets from the corner of her eyes. The warmth of that liquid seemed to carry a searing heat, spreading from his fingertips straight to his heart. The void that had long existed inside him was suddenly filled in this moment. His heart beat strongly, and an unfamiliar wave of emotion surged through him.

Feng Guang held his hand against her face, needing confirmation before she could fully relax. “You didn’t… have any dark thoughts?”

“I didn’t,” he reassured her.

“Then… your wheelchair, and your legs?” She stammered, barely able to form a sentence. “You can stand now.”

He held her hand tighter, rubbing it gently. “I’ve been doing rehab every day. You also mentioned that the side effects from the medication might not be as bad as we thought.”

“An Tong, do you know how worried I was about you? I thought you… I thought you had left me!” Feng Guang sniffled, then lightly punched his chest.

The punch wasn’t strong; she couldn’t bear to hit him with force. An Tong pulled her into his embrace, letting her cry against his chest. He gently patted her back. “I’m sorry. I was wrong.”

“Sorry, sorry… You always just say sorry after making me upset!”

Now that she mentioned it, he realized it was true.

“Feng Guang, stop crying. It’s my fault.” An Tong rarely felt like he had miscalculated, but the few times he did, it was always because of her. As he held her, a mix of heartache and guilt filled him, but there was also a strange, unspoken excitement. She had jumped into the water for him, panicked because she thought he was gone. She didn’t want him to die. She cared about him. Just thinking about it gave him an indescribable sense of satisfaction. He lifted his hand. “This is for you.”

Feng Guang finally noticed the flower in his hand—red with a hint of purple, its posture graceful, and its fragrance delicate. She took it, sniffling. “What is this?”

“It’s a lady’s slipper orchid. Before we came here, I researched and found out this area is its natural habitat. I wanted to find one, and it turns out I did.”

Feng Guang knew he liked growing flowers, but she still pouted in confusion. “So you went off alone to find this, making me worry so much?”

Seeing her about to cry again, An Tong quickly patted her back, soothing her like a child. “This flower is also called the ‘Goddess’s Flower.’ I specifically found it to give to you.”

He was calling her a goddess!

Her cheeks flushed, and at last, a smile broke through her tears.
