The sound of Aunt’s hysterical cries ceased, and in the room, there were a few gentle words of persuasion from the grandmother. Under the grandmother’s persuasion, the quarrel between Aunt and her son Connor temporarily ended. However, a heavy atmosphere lingered in the house, filled with contradictions about marriage, about the future, about free love, and about genetic compatibility. These conflicts did not vanish just because the argument had ended.
The ordinary quarrel between mother and son was a microcosm of imperial contradictions. Once the balance was disrupted, it was not something that a simple quarrel could resolve.
Outside the house, Ryan and Auston have divided the branches of the moonlight roses in the planting cabin, planted them in the holes dug in advance, and poured in root water and nutrient solution. Auston meticulously wiped away any mud spots and dust on the leaves and petals. Transplanting the moonlight roses from the planting cabin to the soil, after the process of pruning and trimming, the once vibrant and robust moonlight roses appeared a bit wilted. Auston looked at them with concern, afraid that these flowers, which Ryan had daringly picked from the deep cracks of B612 Moon Bay, might be harmed due to his rough handling. He wouldn’t forgive himself if these flowers died.
“Don’t worry, plants often react like this when they’re transplanted. They’ll adapt, just give them some time,” Ryan shooed away the affectionate Da Fu attempting to cuddle at Auston’s feet, reassuring, “Moonlight roses are incredibly resilient. They aren’t the delicate flowers grown in a greenhouse; they’re tenacious plants that used to thrive on the edge of abyssal cracks. They can grow strong even without sunlight and rain. With such good conditions now, there’s no reason why they should not grow well.”
What wasn’t told to Auston was that he had continuously adjusted the environment inside the planting cabins to see if the moonlight roses would adapt. The results were excellent. These plants were even hardier than characteristic plants from harsh environments like desert cacti or snow mountain primroses. Temperatures as low as minus thirty degrees Celsius or as high as plus thirty degrees Celsius, storms, and snowfall – none of these could diminish their vibrant beauty. In the stable environment, they grew effortlessly, thriving as if they were made for it.
The multi-petaled moonlight roses were incredibly beautiful. With further growth, they could potentially become a valuable cash crop for the planting star.
Da Fu, who had been shooed away, opened his mouth and let out a small, dissatisfied meow at Ryan. He was annoyed; Ryan didn’t allow it to get close to its master.
“We’re heading to the pasture,” Ryan decided to divert Auston’s attention. “Trust me, I guarantee that when we come back, all the planted moonlight roses will be thriving.”
“I trust you; it’s just that I don’t trust my own skills,” Auston chuckled helplessly. “This is my first time planting flowers; there are many things I can’t do well.”
“You handle it with utmost care and cherish them,” Ryan said, a hint of jealousy in his tone. “Even better than how you treat me.”
Auston smiled, “First attempts always require extra attention, you know.”
Ryan turned his head away, looking in another direction. “During our first time,” he said, “you said, ‘Soldier, complete the mission as soon as possible…'”
As Ryan spoke, Auston’s face gradually turned red. He stammered, “That was our first meeting. I wasn’t familiar with you. I just saw a shy young man and thought you were inexperienced. I didn’t want to order you around, thinking you might drag your feet.” In hindsight, it was clear that both of them were quite nervous during their first experience, and it didn’t go very well. This made Auston somewhat resistant when they tried it the second time, and this feeling he wouldn’t share with Ryan.
The young man, who is much older, remained inherently shy and gentle. He had intended to tease Auston a bit, but ended up teasing himself in the process. The atmosphere fell into a brief silence, tinted with a sense of shyness. On the side, Da Fu, who had been playing with his tail for a while, tilted his head, watching his two masters. He wanted to jump on Auston’s lap again. After glancing at Ryan, Da Fu lightly stepped forward, testing the waters, and took a couple of steps toward Auston without being stopped. His big eyes glowed with happiness.
Then, he suddenly leaped forward and pounced on Auston’s lap. Standing on his hind legs, he hugged Auston’s legs with his front paws. His fluffy little face rubbed against Auston’s legs, and he made contented purring sounds in his small voice.
- ··
After planting the flowers, Ryan took Auston to the pasture in a small open-air flying vehicle. They cruised at a leisurely pace, enjoying the scenery while feeling the gentle breeze caress their faces. Various scents wafted into their nostrils without any hindrance. Unlike when exploring unknown asteroids where they had to be vigilant, fearing the possibility of deadly toxins in the scents, there was no need for such concerns on Asteroid E69. They could relax and fully immerse themselves in the experience.
With their current speed, the flying vehicle reached the pasture after twenty minutes of flight. The vast green pasture was scattered with cows and sheep. Brown-colored puppies, short-legged and tailless, nestled near the cattle and sheep. They lay leisurely on the grass, occasionally lifting their heads to alertly watch the cows and sheep. If any of them misbehaved and roamed around, the dogs would bark a couple of times. The Corgis were indeed skilled herders.
Cows were periodically taken away to be milked, and the semi-automated milking process shortened the work time. Ryan pulled Auston to experience the sensation of manually milking a cow. When Auston’s hand touched the bulging part of the cow, the cow let out a low moo, and its hind legs moved slightly, almost startling the battle-hardened general.
The black-and-white spotted cows innocently blinked their large black eyes, “Moo~”
Laughter filled the air around them.
Lunch was served with the workers at the pasture. The freshly slaughtered lamb, skillfully prepared by the women, turned into delicious hand-pulled mutton. It required no special seasonings; the sheep here had only a subtle hint of gaminess. When eaten, it was sprinkled with fine bamboo salt or mixed with chili powder ground together with peanuts and sesame seeds, making it exceptionally tasty.
Auston loved it, and what he loved even more was how the workers paid no attention to his status. They chatted and joked with him freely, teasing him and Ryan in good spirits, making him feel incredibly comfortable.
After the meal, Ryan and Auston lay on a high stack of hay, their arms behind their heads, gazing up at the sky. They watched fluffy white clouds slowly drift across the deep blue sky. The air was filled with the subtle rustling of grass leaves swaying in the wind, the lazy calls of cows and sheep, and the playful laughter of the workers in the distance.
Auston closed his eyes. “I feel completely relaxed. During vacations after patrols, most of the time, I stayed at Gamma Base. The remaining time was spent dealing with family matters back in the capital star. It never felt like this, where all the work is left behind.”
He felt a gentle kiss land on his cheek. He had grown accustomed to Ryan’s occasional affectionate gestures and didn’t feel awkward anymore. “Ryan.”
“Um?”
Auston’s lips curved into a smile as he said, “If I hadn’t met you, my life would still be dull and monotonous. I’ve carried the burden of my entire family since I was 21, never sparing time for personal affairs. I kept busy and before I knew it, I turned thirty. I received a reminder on my personal terminal to register at the Adaptation Registration Center. I thought I would find a compatible partner quickly, but unknowingly, eleven years have passed. As far as the Empire is concerned, I hold the record for the longest wait for adaptation results.”
The efficiency of the imperial government wasn’t great, but it shouldn’t have taken eleven years to determine adaptation. Most people can know the results within three years. There had been studies conducted by experts regarding Auston’s case, and the conclusion was that his genes were particularly unique, making it challenging to find a suitable match.
“And then I met you,” Ryan said, lying on his side and gazing at Auston’s profile. “The day the adaptation results came out was the first time I saw you in person. The first time was when you were promoted to the rank of Major General. I remember there were over thirty people receiving ranks that day, but you, I saw you at first glance.”
Those black eyes were beautiful. Auston had inherited the family traits, yet he was entirely different from the person Ryan had known. Ryan felt that Auston’s eyes were like the profound universe, holding a dazzling galaxy within them—reserved, steady, yet filled with an upward vitality. Perhaps, before becoming Ryan, he had gazed at such a sight for a very, very long time. Seeing those eyes again filled him with fondness
“It’s been a long time. It was a month before I went for the adaptation registration,” Auston had forgotten what it felt like to stand in the grand hall, to stand among people older than himself, receiving his rank. He couldn’t recall what he felt right before he was about to undergo adaptation testing. He realized that before he met Ryan, his life was black and white, devoid of any fluctuations. He had suppressed his emotions to the lowest level, just thinking about moving forward, shouldering the burden of his family and the Legion, always moving forward.
He opened his eyes, turned to face Ryan, and looked into those focused and tender eyes. Auston smiled and said, “Ryan, I’ve said this many times, but I still want to say it. Thank you.”
He leaned forward, relishing this continuous progression. He initiated a kiss with Ryan, deepening it passionately. Ryan held Auston’s waist, allowing Auston to kiss him, clumsily but earnestly…
Under the stack of hay, the little white creature paced restlessly along the edge, occasionally tilting his head to let out annoyed whimpers, “Woo, woo, woo!!” He was upset; why didn’t they take him up with them? His immature paws scratched at the hay, and his front legs strained to climb upwards while his hind legs kept kicking, achieving the impressive height of thirty centimeters off the ground.
“Awoo, awoo~” If he could laugh with a “hahaha,” Da Fu would have undoubtedly thrown back his head in laughter.
Snap—
Laughter turned into a cry. Da Fu tumbled to the ground. He shook his head and climbed up, his face swollen with dissatisfaction. A bird flew across the sky, its clear chirps reaching the ground. Da Fu looked up without blinking as the group of birds flew away. His wings on its side moved unconsciously up and down…
“Woo?”
Da Fu felt himself becoming lighter. He lowered his head in confusion, realizing his four little paws were off the ground. In his first attempt at flying, Da Fu suddenly felt bewildered. His mind went blank, and then, with a thud, he crashed back down to the ground. This time, Da Fu didn’t immediately get up. Instead, he pondered his animal existence in the position it fell—Who am I? Where do I come from? Where am I going?
On the high stack of hay, after their kiss, Ryan and Auston lay together lazily, not wanting to move. Suddenly, they heard the sound of wings flapping. Ryan opened his eyes and saw a flash of white.
Ryan: “…”
He can fly, which proves that he is developing well. The calcium supplements hadn’t been in vain. They would need to continue this routine in the future.
Ryan raised his hand and patted Auston’s shoulder, gesturing for him to look up. “I think he doesn’t know how to descend.”
“Awoo, awoo…” Da Fu had learned to fly high, and at first, he felt fantastic. He flapped his wings vigorously, soaring above the hay bale that had initially seemed “unattainably high” for him. Then, he saw his masters, and he got incredibly excited. But after the excitement wore off, he realized he had no idea how to control his wings to fly into his master’s arms. He stretched out his little paws, looking at his masters with watery eyes, silently begging for help.
Auston sat up, arms wide open, calling out to Da Fu, “Come on, control your wings and fly towards me.”
Da Fu was terrified. He glanced down, and the wing-flapping frequency instantly became chaotic—so high, so frightening, it might scare the griffon to death—Da Fu was so scared that he tightly shut its eyes.
Ryan couldn’t help but burst into laughter, “Afraid of heights.”
“Awoo, awoo!” Da Fu grumbled, annoyed with Ryan.
Instinct kicked in, helping Da Fu regain its balance. However, he still didn’t know how to fly to his master and ended up flying another meter higher.
“Don’t be afraid, Da Fu. Look at me and come towards me,” Auston said gently.
Da Fu nervously tucked his front paws and kicked his hind legs in the air, resembling a child learning to swim for the first time or a tadpole in a pond. With Auston’s encouragement, he made relentless efforts and finally flew directly above the hay bale.
“Phew—”
Da Fu let out a human-like sigh, relaxing himself before gently landing again, not on the ground this time, but in his master’s warm embrace. He squinted his eyes and made a cooing sound, “Awoo~”
Auston chuckled, stroking Da Fu’s fur. “Impressive, Da Fu. You’re a big boy now; you can fly.”
“Awoo, awoo!” Pleased with the praise, Da Fu puffed out his chest, feeling incredibly happy.
While they enjoyed their leisurely afternoon at the pasture near Sea of love, Aunt Peggy had locked herself in her room, crying for a long time. Her eyes were swollen like walnuts, but the tears just wouldn’t stop. Both sisters had soft and gentle personalities, and when the younger sister cried, her husband was there to comfort her. But Peggy could only cry silently in her room. For the sake of her son, she endured her husband’s scolding, carefully watching his mood, fearing that her son would be left without a mother after he was born. For the sake of her son, she tried to please her husband, hoping to provide her child with a complete family. For the sake of her son, she continued her studies and personally taught her child grammar. For the sake of her son, she meticulously cleaned her child’s living space, ensuring a clean and hygienic environment… Had she done everything wrong?
Connor said, “Mom, I want freedom.”
Peggy, with tear-filled eyes, stared blankly at the wall. Had all her years of sacrifices been in vain? She simply didn’t want Connor to grow old without a partner, without his own family. If he injected the φ3 synthetic element compound, he could participate in genetic adaptation, just like Ryan. How wonderful would that be?
Why did Connor laugh so bitterly, still insisting on his desire for freedom?
What was freedom, really?
A concept that Aunt Peggy couldn’t grasp.
Knock, knock.
The door was knocked twice and then pushed open. Mom1T/N: Ryan’s Mom, Pelly, walked in and sat down next to her sister, wrapping her arms around her from behind, just like they used to do when they were younger.
“Pelly, did I do something wrong?”
Pelly sighed, “Sister, everything you’ve done has only moved yourself. Do you really think the child will appreciate it?”
Peggy didn’t understand and asked in confusion, “What do you mean?”
“I’ve told you before, once a child is born, they are an independent individual. They have their own thoughts and freedom, their own privacy and space. You shouldn’t constantly influence their thoughts, rummage through their things, or even plan their lives for them.” Pelly had tried to advise her several times, but she never listened. “Sis, this will only push Connor further away from you.”
Peggy was stunned, and a deep fear welled up from the depths of her heart. She could see Connor’s melancholic eyes in her mind. She clenched her fists suddenly, saying, “No, no, don’t say that.”
“Then respect the children’s choices and don’t try to control him,” Pelly hugged her sister, who was trembling slightly. “Connor is a good kid. Even if he stays single for the rest of his life, he still has us, his family. And who knows what the future holds? He might meet someone who can change his perspective.”
Human thoughts and emotions are complex and ever-changing, hard to grasp completely. However, Ryan was sure about one thing: animals were straightforward. Because of the quarrel between Aunt Peggy and cousin Connor, there was a brief moment of silence in the house. People chose silence to protect their loved ones’ fragile nerves. By the next day, things had settled down. Perhaps Aunt Peggy had thought it through overnight, as she no longer interfered with Connor’s choices. Connor, on the other hand, laughed it off as if he hadn’t been bothered at all.
Ryan temporarily put aside the plan of exploring the planting stars with Auston because his cousin Connor invited Auston to discuss the follow-up progress of “The Song of Beacon.” He was uncertain about the characterization of the Great Emperor and urgently needed to discuss and organize his thoughts with someone.
Ryan didn’t get involved and took Da fu to the gym.
“Good boy, it’s good for your health.” Ryan waved a calcium pill in front of Da fu.
“Growl growl growl!” Da fu resisted, really wanting to bite Ryan to show him that his teeth were not just for show. But Da fu was no match for Ryan. His mouth was pried open, and a one-centimeter-long white pill-shaped medicine was stuffed into his mouth. Ryan held Dafu’s mouth shut with one hand, not letting him spit it out, while the other hand helped him swallow the pill down his throat. After hearing a gulp, Ryan released Da fu.
Da fu scampered away like a cat chased by a dog, arching its back and baring his teeth at Ryan. The bright eyes of the little creature glinted with cunning as he rolled his throat and spit out the pill.
“Hahaha…” Dafu chuckled, as if laughing.
Ryan: “…” This little thing has been spoiled and isn’t afraid of him anymore.
A silent smile tugged at the corner of Ryan’s mouth as he gently looked at Da fu. The sharp intuition of the little creature told Da fu that the current Ryan was very dangerous. It reminded Da fu of the scenes when Ryan had teased him, and he timidly took a step back. Under Ryan’s gaze, Da fu let out a soft, coquettish sound. This tactic worked on Auston, but Ryan had a “heart of stone” and was completely unaffected. Da fu let out a pitiful cry, lowered his head, and obediently swallowed the calcium pill. He opened his mouth to show Ryan, wagging his tail in an attempt to please him.
Ryan chuckled, “Smart little guy, as long as you keep him happy, I’ll keep you. But you have to behave, understand?”
The griffin beast was highly intelligent. Da fu, as an atavistic griffin beast, hadn’t inherited its parents’ fierce appearance, but he possessed remarkable intelligence. Like a mischievous child, he quietly observed humans and constantly learned to mimic them. He knew who the most dangerous person in the house was and who was the kindest, so he instinctively kept his distance or approached accordingly.
After playing with Da fu for a while, Ryan’s personal terminal beeped. The books he had ordered had been transported from Newnes to the space station outside E69 and were ready for pickup. Since he had nothing else to do, Ryan informed the staff responsible for sending and receiving packages and went to pick up the delivery himself, piloting his starship to the outer space station.
Nowadays, interstellar delivery is incredibly fast. Planets around Newnes can achieve next-day delivery, and those farther away take two days at most. Goods shipped from the capital planet can reach any corner of the Stormwind Starfield within fifteen days. This swift delivery is made possible by advancements in modern technology and well-developed storage and logistics systems. Interstellar spaceships, operated by artificial intelligence, perform frequent jumps, and the turbulence experienced during these jumps no longer poses discomfort to the passengers.
E69’s strategic geographical location, flying around the capital planet Newnes, ensures next-day delivery for anything purchased. Vegetables and fruits from Ryan’s home are also transported through logistics to Newnes, making their way into supermarkets and households across the region.
Outside the planting stars, there are space stations orbiting small asteroids. Passengers disembark from public transport here, and goods are transferred for further delivery. When Ryan piloted his small starship up to the space station, he saw packages piled up on the platform—some were his, others belonged to his family or numerous employees. After loading them onto his starship, Ryan returned home. He handed over the other packages to the responsible personnel, then carried his ordered books upstairs and went directly to his cousin’s room.
The biggest feature of his cousin’s room is that there are many books, keyboards, and maps from different eras. Perhaps this was the room of an intellectual?
As Auston and Connor, engrossed in their discussion, turned their heads to look at the entering Ryan, he tilted his head and said, “Connor, writing a book must be tough. I brought you some books as reference materials.”
“What kind of books?” Connor asked, puzzled.
Ryan placed the box down and, after tearing open the seal, replied, “You mentioned having trouble with the characterization of the Great Emperor. I thought maybe you didn’t have a comprehensive understanding, so I bought some books. Take a look…”
After the box was fully opened, the covers of the books inside were revealed: “The Emperor and His Deputies: An Insider’s Perspective,” “Those Years: People Who Pursued the Emperor,” “The Childhood Love Letter – Lisa’s Memoir,” “The Emperor’s Lifelong Bachelor Secret,” “The Emperor Stayed Single All His Life, All for Him”…
There’s more,” Ryan said, removing the top layer to reveal the books beneath for Connor and Auston to see. They were titled: “Tyrant – The Emperor’s Militaristic Life,” “Warning, This Man Is Dangerous, Stay Away ASAP,” “The Art of Cruelty – On How the Emperor Ruthlessly Dissected the Insectoid Race,” “Cruel Man, Dangerous Emperor”…
Ryan’s eyes lit up as he continued to pull out book after book, delving deeper into the dark path of the Black Emperor. His methods of mocking were childish and mundane, but thanks to the summaries left by his predecessors, he could extract these essences to share with Auston.
The last few books were particularly provocative, exuding an air of sensuality. Their titles were explicit and teasing, their covers extravagantly sensual, evoking thoughts of passionate nights, ambiguous screams, and images of intertwining bodies… The indescribable escapades of the Emperor~
Ryan: “…” He felt embarrassed even reading these himself.
“Ryan!” Connor exclaimed.
Ryan: “It’s alright; everyone has both positive and negative aspects. Take a look at these materials. Don’t waste what I bought.” Ryan finished his sentence, trying to appear confident despite Auston’s disapproving gaze.
Auston: “Ryan, these are all fabrications made by later generations, created to sensationalize, and none of it can be trusted. The Emperor was a just and noble man, and these unsightly books only serve to enhance his towering image. Great men cannot be slandered by the world.”
Ryan: “…” Ouch, his feet hurt.
Ryan had metaphorically hit himself in the foot multiple times in his life. Well, he had strong mental endurance; if he failed, he just kept going. However, this time, he felt deeply frustrated, and he couldn’t help but want to laugh a little.
Qin Feng Anderson’s image in Auston’s heart remained unshaken. Ryan could only watch with a mix of jealousy and disdain as Auston and his cousin Connor delved deep into discussions about the Great Emperor. They talked for three days straight, often behind closed doors, without even sparing a glance for him. Sitting bored on the windowsill, Ryan waited for his lover to return and “comfort” him. He heard deliberately light footsteps approaching from behind, but he didn’t turn around. Soon, he felt a body pressing against his own as Auston wrapped his arms around him.
Auston’s arms encircled Ryan’s waist, and a tightly clenched fist appeared in front of Ryan. In Ryan’s gaze, that fist opened, revealing an ordinary ring in the palm.
Inside the ring was engraved a saying widely circulated in the Red Coral Star Cluster: ‘Where there is a home, there is love; where there is love, there is you.’
“Connor suggested I carve some patterns on it. He said roses symbolize sincere and unchanging love, and red roses represent eternal, unchanging love. The emblem of the Golden Crusaders has a rose on it. I thought about it, but any decoration I carved wouldn’t express my love, and my skills are terrible…” Auston didn’t let Ryan turn around; he was afraid he wouldn’t be able to express himself clearly under Ryan’s gaze. His nervousness was no less than meeting Ryan’s parents for the first time. “The inscription inside the ring is the most widely circulated saying in the Red Coral Star Cluster, and it was something my mother used to say often. When I was a child, she would hold me and say to my dad, ‘Come home early.'”
The ring emitted a subtle black halo under the light; it was made of mithril. Obtaining a small piece of mithril had cost Auston a lot of effort in a short amount of time. He had secretly crafted it himself, hiding it from Ryan. The finished product didn’t look as good as the one Ryan had given him; he hoped to improve it in the future.
Ryan looked at Auston’s fingers. No wonder he had been hiding his hands these past few days, not letting Ryan see. There were small wounds on his slender fingers. The melting point of mithril was similar to gold, but shaping it was much more challenging. It required low-temperature refinement and had to be shaped within thirty seconds after being placed in ice water. The skill requirement was extremely high.
Ryan tenderly held Auston’s hand, wanting to turn and embrace him, but Auston prevented him from turning around. Auston continued, “Emotionally, I’m clumsy. I don’t know how to express myself. Except for work, everything else is you accommodating me. You’ve taken care of me so meticulously in life, but I don’t know how to repay you. In the future, let me share the responsibilities at home, too. Ryan, I love you.”
“Auston, I love you too.” Ryan’s heart shone as brightly as the evening sky. His smile was exaggerated, reaching all the way to his ears.
Auston: “I’m sorry for how I behaved when we first met.”
“It’s because my technique wasn’t good; I hurt you,” Ryan admitted his shortcomings openly and worked hard to make up for it in the future. “I’ll keep improving.”
Auston paused for a moment, finally expressing what he had been thinking in his heart to Ryan, “Ryan, you are not just a tool for bearing children. I’m sorry for saying that when we first met.”
Ryan: “You were cold and distant back then, but it was actually quite cute.”
Auston blushed, burying his head against Ryan’s back, he said, “Our child should be born out of love. I’m willing to have a child with you.”
Using the pretext of discussing the Great Emperor with Connor, Auston prepared the mithril ring for Ryan. It might not have been aesthetically perfect, and the inscription inside the ring was a bit crooked, but he had carefully written it himself. Ryan loved it. During meals and family gatherings, he would casually raise his hand just to let everyone see that he had a ring. It might have seemed childish to others, and he laughed like a fool, but he felt perfectly natural. To others, he appeared like a child holding up a lollipop, seeking praise.
Every time he did this, Auston would sit uncomfortably due to his shyness and nervousness. In the teasing voices of the elders, he didn’t know how to position his hands and feet to appear normal.
This awkward atmosphere didn’t last long because Ryan initiated their plan to explore the entire planting star.
They started from the nearest equator, diving into the shallow seas to observe corals and schools of fish. They ventured into the deep seas to see the deep-sea fish being cultivated in enclosures. Heading north, they visited an apple orchard where Ryan showcased his superior climbing skills, swiftly ascending a tree to pick a bright red apple for Auston. They went into the deep forests and high mountains, picking mushrooms, collecting stone ears (a type of fungus), and harvesting wild honey. Ryan also took Auston to the primitive place he had discovered, a cave facing a sea of flowers that seemed unremarkable but held a special charm. They made love by the seaside under the night sky filled with stars, embraced each other warmly in the morning sun on the grasslands, and kissed under the ancient poplar trees in the desert.
In the blink of an eye, a week had passed since they returned to the planting star. On this day, a new guest arrived.
