Feng Guang was completely stunned.
Si Jia paused for a moment. “Maybe all the children in this town wear the same kind of longevity lock.”
Who was he trying to fool? Even if the locks were the same, they wouldn’t all have the same name engraved on them!
She opened her mouth but couldn’t speak for a long time. Finally, she managed a sentence. “Si Jia, you don’t have to say things just to comfort me… because… because I’m already freaking out on my own!”
By the end of her sentence, she threw herself into his arms. She didn’t care whether he pushed her away or not—she just clung to him for dear life.
He could genuinely feel her fear. Up to this point, he hadn’t realized just how strong she was.
Her head buried against his chest, she asked, “You said the skeleton was already ten years old… then who—or what—was the You’er we saw?”
That was a difficult question to answer. He wasn’t the type to tell comforting lies, but he could easily imagine how terrified she’d be if he said what she was already afraid to think.
“Si Jia… something’s off about everyone in that inn. If You’er is… that, then his mother, the innkeeper, even the driver who brought us here—doesn’t that mean they’re all…”
“Not just them,” Si Jia added calmly. “It’s the entire town. And the people from the opera troupe. They’re all the same.”
“Why… why do you say that?” Feng Guang still clung to some hope. It made sense if the townspeople were strange—after all, they only came out at night. But the opera troupe had come from outside… right?
“Master Chen and her people—they all smelled like liquor. The same liquor that these townspeople drink every night.”
Feng Guang didn’t know much about alcohol and didn’t like drinking, either. She couldn’t tell the difference between a top-tier nu’er hong and a bowl of cheap erguotou. But Si Jia was different—he had an acute sense of smell.
Still, she felt a little wronged. She had a good nose, too! She could remember what he smelled like, after all… so why couldn’t she even pick up the scent of alcohol?
Maybe the ability to memorize her target’s scent was just one of her “cheat codes”…
Even she didn’t quite believe that.
Trying to steady herself, she timidly asked, “So you mean… they’re all in on it?”
“I don’t think they’re working together,” Si Jia replied with calm logic. “If they were, that child’s skeleton wouldn’t have been hidden in Master Chen’s room. But… they are the same kind of people.”
Same kind of people—as in, ghosts, right?
Feng Guang began to shiver. “Then what do we do now? Are they keeping us trapped here so they can… eat us?”
“So far, I haven’t seen any signs of hostility from them,” Si Jia said. “And maybe… Her Highness the Princess might be able to figure out what they’re after.”
She blinked. “Why do you think I would know?”
Si Jia didn’t answer right away. After a brief pause, he said, “This town is strange, yes. But I haven’t seen any direct danger from them yet. As for getting out… that’s nothing to worry about. Once tomorrow passes, we’ll be able to leave.”
Tomorrow, meaning the third day they had agreed upon.
Feng Guang didn’t understand where he got this confidence from. But strangely enough, she believed it anyway. “So… should we keep looking for You’er, or head back to the inn?”
“Let’s go back. There’s no point continuing the search outside.”
“Okay, I’ll follow your lead.”
