The two mischievous little rascals ran ahead at lightning speed as if they were afraid of being scolded by their father, leaving the two adults far behind.

Song Dongyun, who had not been involved in the matter but had only observed, wasn’t feeling too bad, though she did feel a pang of sympathy as she looked at the silent man beside her.

She had chosen this man, and even though she had some grievances after these few months, she still liked him more than anything. What upset her, though, was the behavior of Dabo (Big Treasure) and Erbao (Second Treasure). If it hadn’t been for their troublemaking, Xiang Lifeng wouldn’t have come here with a back injury just to demand an explanation.

She was also a bit angry with Du Qingli, mainly because she had struck her husband, but beyond that, she didn’t feel much curiosity. After all, Dabo and Erbao had bullied their child.

So, the anger wasn’t something she could justify fully, and in the end, she only felt sorry for him.

Xiang Lifeng remained silent throughout, not even letting Song Dongyun support him. He walked ahead with a stern face. Du Qingli hadn’t hurt him much, just made him lose face.

It was so embarrassing.

He had been overpowered by a woman in someone else’s house!

Xiang Lifeng took a deep breath, the ache in his cheek intensifying, and he could feel his eyes welling up. His face burned with shame as he glanced at the two children, who were running and looking back now and then, as though they were afraid they might be caught.

He felt a wave of helplessness.

He truly loved his three children, but since he had spent so many years away from home, the children had no mother to guide them. Their mother doted on them, and since their father had been absent, she was even more reluctant to discipline them.

Now that they were spoiled to this extent, he tried to correct them, even resorting to physical punishment, but they hadn’t changed at all. They had become even worse, leading to the current situation. It made him furious with them both.

He had thought the children were being bullied, but now he realized they had been the ones doing the bullying, only to run into a wall and get beaten, and then return crying to apologize.

They never mentioned the times they succeeded in bullying others.

Xiang Lifeng rubbed his temples, feeling a headache coming on. He almost felt like giving up. These two children were hopeless. And there was still Sanbao (Third Treasure); in the future, he might have more children.

Song Dongyun immediately shook her head and smiled. “It’s no trouble. You still haven’t fully recovered from your injury. Did you hurt yourself again just now?”

Xiang Lifeng felt a warmth in his heart. He had been upset and ignored her care along the way, but she hadn’t gotten angry. He felt a little guilty and lowered his voice, “It’s fine. She didn’t hit me too hard.”

Song Dongyun linked her arm with his and comforted him, “That’s good. Don’t be too upset. The children will learn with time. Maybe when they grow up, they’ll understand.”

We can teach this child properly, and he and Sanbao will be close in age, so they’ll play well together in the future.”

Song Dongyun was a bit surprised. Although they hadn’t spoken explicitly about it, they had mostly been using contraception. She had thought that Xiang Lifeng didn’t want any more children, and she wasn’t upset about it.

She was a little afraid of the pain of childbirth, and part of the reason she had agreed to be a stepmother was because she didn’t have to bear children herself.

They hadn’t started yet because they were waiting for the right time and had some reservations, especially with the three children needing their father’s discipline.

Song Dongyun listened to his explanation and quickly shook her head, smiling shyly. “I was about to tell you… I think I might already be pregnant. My… well, my period is late by almost a week, which has never happened before.”

Xiang Lifeng’s eyes immediately lit up, and the huge surprise made him stop in his tracks. He asked in disbelief, “Really?”

Song Dongyun nodded, and seeing his reaction, she felt even more joyful and content. “It’s very likely. In about half a month, we can go to the town for a check-up.”

It was too early to confirm, but her period was always regular, and this delay had happened just after two instances where they hadn’t used protection. The chances were high!

Xiang Lifeng took a deep breath, trying to calm down, but he couldn’t. His usually dark face turned bright red. At that moment, he completely forgot about the trouble Dabo and Erbao had caused. All he could think about was that he was going to be a father again!

The first three times his children were born, he had been away in the military, and by the time he came back, the children had already been born.

He hadn’t spent much time with his first wife, so the joy of those moments had faded.

But now, with the wife he spent every day with, this was truly a moment of happiness.

Xiang Lifeng, usually so composed, couldn’t contain himself. Seeing no one around, he immediately lifted Song Dongyun into his arms. “This is great! We’re going to have a child! This baby came just in time. Over the next few months, I plan to work on the carriage. I’ll make more money so that Four Bao can have a better life.”

“Hey! Put me down! Be careful!” Song Dongyun also smiled brightly, but she was a bit shy from suddenly being lifted. She quickly patted his shoulder.

But she had never seen their mother and Xiang Lifeng so close.

Now, this stepmother, whom they disliked, was able to be so intimate with him.

“What’s wrong?” Erbao asked, not yet fully understanding.

Dabo’s eyes were red as she muttered, “Erbao, we’re going to lose Dad. He never hugged Mom, but now he’s hugging the stepmother…”

What terrified them, even more, was that later that night, Erbao overheard Xiang Lifeng telling Grandpa and Grandma that Song Dongyun was pregnant…

That night, instead of going to bed, the three children sat up when their stepmother left.

Dabo had already been crying uncontrollably, pulling back the blanket and sobbing, “I don’t want this baby!”

As the oldest child, her feelings were the most intense. Even though Xiang Lifeng had often scolded her in the past few months, she was still the happiest when she was on her best behavior because her father would be especially kind to her—he would hold her, and rub her head.

The two boys didn’t get this much attention, and only Song Dongyun could treat her the same way.

So, she hated Song Dongyun more than her younger brothers did.

She was eight, almost nine, and she understood that if Song Dongyun had a boy, the whole family would focus on him. If she had a girl, Dabo knew she would lose her father’s favor.

Not to mention that Song Dongyun wouldn’t stop at just one child.

No woman in the village had only one child!

Erbao’s face was clouded as he quietly said, “I don’t want it either.”

Although he didn’t reject it as strongly as Dabo, he was smarter and more aware of how Xiang Lifeng had spoken to Grandpa and Grandma about the unborn child, showing more care for it and disappointment toward them.
