Ali put on a pitiful look. “Mom, if Dad really hits me, you’re just gonna stand by and do nothing?”
Wei Xuwei smiled. “Of course not.” Then she added with a teasing tone, “I’ll wait until he’s done, and then put medicine on you.”
Ali: “…”
She let out a little whine, shoved a big spoonful of ice cream into her mouth. On the other end of the phone, Shao Mingxuan, who had been completely ignored, was grinding his teeth in rage. “Where are you? I’ll come pick you up.”
“Nope,” Ali refused flatly. “We already have a driver.”
Shao Mingxuan’s voice turned dark. “Give me the address! Do you really want a beating?”
Ali chuckled and hung up.
Still acting like he has the right to be mad?
Ali refused to say the address, and Shao Mingxuan had no way around it. He was so furious that he ended up slamming his phone to the floor.
A passing housemaid was startled, suddenly feeling that her job security was in danger. The atmosphere in this household had been icy lately—was the family about to fall apart?
Meanwhile, on the other side, everything was peaceful and cozy. After Ali hung up, Wei Xuwei slid over a plate of freshly cooked hotpot skewers. “Eat up. Once we’re done, we’ll head home.”
Ali frowned. “Honestly, I don’t really feel like going back yet…”
Wei Xuwei chuckled. “Then what do you want to do?”
“Let’s go to KTV and sing!” Ali suggested after thinking for a moment.
Wei Xuwei flicked her daughter on the forehead and reminded, “That’s enough. Pushing it further won’t do us any good right now.”
Ali shrugged, dropping the idea. She knew her mom was right—if they provoked Shao Mingxuan too much and he ended up filing for divorce out of sheer anger, that would be bad.
After lunch, Ali and Wei Xuwei parted ways with the two handsome guys. As they were leaving, one of them even pinched Ali’s cheek with a grin. “Hey kiddo, next time you need playmates like this, remember to call us.”
“Sure thing!” Ali answered with a bright smile.
Back home, Shao Mingxuan was sitting on the sofa.
When he heard the sound of the door, he didn’t even turn his head. His voice was icy cold. “So you finally decided to come back?”
“Honestly, not really,” Ali answered truthfully.
Shao Mingxuan whipped his head around, his face dark.
Ali blinked innocently. “What? I was just telling the truth. Can’t even do that?”
His voice sank. “Are you trying to put a green hat on your old man?”
Ali pouted. “How is that a green hat? Dad, yesterday you went to the amusement park with Auntie Su. Today I went to the amusement park with Mom and some handsome brothers. What’s the difference? How’s that unfair?!”
Shao Mingxuan froze in panic. He had told Ali not to mention it to her mom—yet here she was blurting it out! All those toys he bought her, wasted!
He instinctively glanced at Wei Xuwei. “That… I…”
Wei Xuwei walked past him without looking, calling out, “Ali, go take another hot shower and change your clothes. I’ll make you some ginger tea so you don’t catch a cold.”
“Okay!” Ali quickly followed. Passing her dad, she added earnestly, “Dad, you really shouldn’t be looking at us with tinted glasses. I just wanted to play. Mom can’t handle me alone, so I found two handsome brothers to help. What’s wrong with that? You really can’t be this much of a double standard. When you went out with Auntie Su, I supported you. But when it’s me, suddenly it’s not okay? Teacher says double standards are wrong—everyone should be treated equally!”
With a sigh, she walked off, leaving behind the image of a disappointed daughter, as if silently declaring—you’re just a stubborn, selfish old man stuck in your double standards!
Shao Mingxuan choked on his own breath, face turning red.
Clearly—
But clearly what? He couldn’t even finish the thought.
He knew in his heart that if anyone had crossed the line first, it was him. Even if it was just a moment of weakness, there was no denying he was the one in the wrong.
As for Wei Xuwei letting Ali call in two male companions—he knew, given her personality, it was basically impossible she’d ever betray him. Sure, the swimsuits bothered him, but compared to his own mistake, hers didn’t seem as serious.
Still, it gnawed at him—like watching something you don’t particularly cherish, yet still think of as yours, being touched by someone else. And this wasn’t just anything—it was his wife. Everyone knew it. She represented part of his pride and his face.
He dreaded being laughed at—can’t even keep your wife in check, what a loser. Worse yet, since he was guilty first, he had no ground to stand on.
He wasn’t like those men who didn’t care about their wives’ or daughters’ eyes on them.
And he couldn’t, under his daughter’s clear gaze, claim that men were allowed to fool around while women were not.
He didn’t know whether Ali had done it on purpose to get back at him, or if she was simply fighting to give her mother the fairness she deserved. But either way, her move hit its mark.
At the very least, it snapped him out of the careless, floating mood he’d been in since yesterday.
As for Su Qiu—what was her attitude? Why hadn’t she refused him? They hadn’t talked about it at all.
Yesterday felt like an accident, something neither of them dared to bring up again.
Maybe she, too, had just been swept up in the moment?
Shao Mingxuan rubbed his face, torn between two choices: confront it directly… or keep pretending it never happened.
