Oddly enough, whenever she had one of those episodes, Shen Yanjun would rush to her side. So she had them more often. Since pregnant women couldn’t take many medications, and checkups showed no obvious issues, the doctors said it was probably due to her being too underweight and suggested nutritional supplements.
And that’s when Shen’s mother took over.
Which became another nightmare for Xu Yin. Drinking soup every day felt like torture.
After throwing up again, she forced herself to take two more sips. But before she could swallow, she vomited once more. Shen’s mother returned just in time to see it, her face falling.
She didn’t say much—after all, it wasn’t unusual for pregnant women to throw up. But she still grumbled, “You don’t know how good you have it. Being pampered with all this food and still throwing up. If my grandson ends up malnourished, what then? Such bad luck…”
Xu Yin forced a bitter smile. “Auntie, I just—”
They weren’t married yet, so Shen’s mother wouldn’t let her call her “Mom.” She stayed in the Shen house because Shen’s mother didn’t trust Xu Yin’s greedy, money-hungry parents.
Shen’s mother waved her off. “Forget it. Don’t drink it, then. Go do whatever you want. But if something happens to the baby, don’t say I didn’t warn you!”
Xu Yin flinched, but stood up and hurried upstairs to get her phone, escaping like her life depended on it.
Her body had grown increasingly weak, so she couldn’t go out and have fun—her only option was to scroll through her phone.
But the moment Xu Yin opened Weibo, the top pinned post immediately caught her attention:
[Huo Qingli Beats Up Shen Yanjun in Public!]
Her brow twitched. She clicked into the post and found a blurry video. The user claimed to have accidentally run into Huo Qingli and Shen Yanjun, wanted to snap a quick video, and ended up capturing this scene instead.
The comments were all jokes:
“With that resolution, I’d believe it if you told me it was Ultraman fighting a kaiju.”
“It’s way too blurry. Were you standing miles away?”
“Let it go. Huo Qingli’s about to get married. She and Chi Yue are happy and in love. Don’t lump her in with her ex again—he’s not even worthy.”
A lot of commenters agreed with that last sentiment. Not many people truly believed the video—it was too pixelated to confirm anything—but it did look a bit like them. And honestly, if it were real, it would feel incredibly satisfying.
Shen Yanjun may have been popular once, but the sleazy things he’d done over the past year, especially after Xu Yin came back, had even his old fans embarrassed to admit they’d ever supported him.
But Xu Yin didn’t need to guess. She knew. That morning, Shen Yanjun had left the house wearing the same color outfit as the one in the video.
And lately, he’d been heading out early and coming home late. It wouldn’t surprise her at all if he’d gone to look for Huo Qingli again.
How ironic.
The only thing she could be grateful for was that Huo Qingli was so ruthlessly decisive. If she had been the clingy, back-and-forth type like in Xu Yin’s awakened memories, then even with a child, Xu Yin might never have stood a chance. And Shen Yanjun still didn’t know the truth.
Why did Huo Qingli get to be so lucky?
Divorced, and her ex was still hung up on her. Meanwhile, Xu Yin was pregnant and completely neglected.
And yet everyone still adored Huo Qingli.
Her only real misfortune was being part of a political marriage with the Chi family.
Xu Yin stared at the comments praising Huo Qingli’s “newfound happiness,” then suddenly let out a soft, bitter laugh.
She remembered something Shen’s mother had said—not everyone saw Chi Yue as some perfect husband.
If they knew the truth—that Huo Qingli’s so-called “happy marriage” was to a crippled, hot-tempered man who couldn’t even perform in bed, and that the marriage was nothing more than a strategic alliance to go up against the Shen family—would they still be saying those things?
Of course not.
They’d probably feel sorry for her.
The beloved daughter of the Huo family, sacrificing her whole future over pride and family interest. As long as the marriage remained, she’d be stuck with that man for the rest of her life.
Especially with how naive she was—if she ever found out the truth, would she cry under the covers at night?
Xu Yin seemed to imagine the scene and couldn’t help but cover her mouth and laugh quietly to herself.
Just then, her phone rang.
She picked it up and heard Shen Yanjun’s gentle voice:
“I’m still finishing things up at the office. I’ll be home late—don’t wait up. Get some rest.”
Xu Yin quickly composed herself and answered in a calm, normal tone:
“Okay. Don’t overwork yourself.”
“Of course.” Shen Yanjun gave a soft chuckle—but then winced and let out a sharp breath, clearly trying to cover up the pain with a cough. “Did your stomach hurt at all today?”
“No, not at all. Auntie made me some soup—it was delicious,” Xu Yin replied casually.
Shen Yanjun wasn’t interested in chatting. As long as the baby was fine, that was all that mattered to him. Everything he did now was “for the child.” He didn’t want to hurt Xu Yin either, so he called out of habit. After confirming everything was fine, his voice grew rushed:
“Okay then, I’ll get back to work.”
“Mhm—” Xu Yin barely had time to respond before the call was already disconnected.
Her expression turned cold.
Meanwhile, Shen Yanjun, staring at his phone screen, let out a long sigh as if a heavy weight had been lifted. He was just about to rub his face when the raw corner of his lip, split from Huo Qingli’s heel, flared up in pain. He didn’t dare touch it. He slumped in the car, frozen in place, his face clouded with the same torn, helpless look he’d been wearing a lot lately.
After thoroughly beating up Shen Yanjun, Huo Qingli felt completely refreshed. And the next day happened to be the day she and Chi Yue were going to register their marriage. She was beaming from start to finish.
That same day, she posted about getting their marriage certificate online, and was flooded with congratulations.
As for the negative comments? She ignored them all.
Now that they were officially husband and wife, she spent the night at the Chi family home. The two families had agreed on a rotation—one month at the Chi house, one month at the Huo house. Since the wedding was happening this month, they’d start with the Chi family.
It was technically their wedding night, but after spending all day getting their marriage license, entertaining family, and celebrating with a big group of relatives, the newlyweds, who still weren’t that familiar with each other, didn’t even have time to feel awkward. They collapsed onto the bed and fell asleep immediately.
No one disturbed them, so the couple slept straight through until almost 10 a.m.—only to be jolted awake by a phone call from Huo Qingli’s long-silent manager.
Half-asleep, she answered the call, only to hear the anxious voice on the other end:
“Qingli, check online! People are dragging your husband into things—they’ve dug up a bunch of stuff! And there’s a flood of paid trolls stirring things up. It’s getting bad!”
Qingli sat up and said she understood, then hung up and opened Weibo.
Right at the top, three trending topics stared back at her:
