But before that little thought could even take shape, it was crushed by Qingli herself.
She hadn’t officially divorced Shen Yanjun yet—it didn’t feel quite right.
With a sigh of regret, she decided to handle it on her own, even if it took more time.
“Let’s go,” Qingli said to Huo Qingyu.
The banquet was already winding down, and after the earlier commotion, the guests weren’t in much of a mood to continue.
Huo Qingyu nodded, and the two of them walked out together.
Xu Yin handed Shen Yanjun a glass of wine. Seeing him unconsciously glance toward the exit, her eyes dimmed slightly, but she acted as if she hadn’t noticed.
She couldn’t wait any longer.
Tonight had to be the night she succeeded.
Once she had a child, Shen Yanjun wouldn’t be able to leave her. The storyline from that awakened memory wouldn’t happen.
Shen Yanjun’s thoughts were still with Huo Qingli—especially that moment earlier when she stopped the wheelchair. He had almost rushed over to help, but when he saw who was in the wheelchair, he stopped himself.
He resented his parents’ favoritism, but he still didn’t want anything to do with the Chi family.
Still, he was surprised at how quickly Huo Qingli reacted—especially in a fishtail dress that made walking difficult, where even a slight misstep could lead to a fall.
Someone as selfish as her would she rush in to help without thinking?
Back then, even when Xu Yin was in desperate need of money, Qingli hadn’t lent her any. She didn’t help her friend, let alone a stranger.
Shen Yanjun glanced at Xu Yin, feeling like something didn’t quite add up. He wanted to ask, but considering his complicated past with Qingli, he held back. It wouldn’t look good to bring her up in front of Xu Yin.
Xu Yin noticed his gaze shifting between her and Qingli, then smiled gently. “Qingli used to say she didn’t get along with her brother. But seeing them now… they seem pretty close.”
Her tone was casual, but the words hit home.
He’d noticed it too. For a pair of siblings supposedly on bad terms, it didn’t make sense that her brother would still help her make connections in the business world after inheriting the family estate.
So maybe all that talk about a bad relationship had just been a lie.
Shen Yanjun didn’t respond, but his conflicted expression relaxed. There was no need to let her affairs trouble him anymore.
He downed the rest of his wine in one gulp—the burn coursed down his throat and into his stomach, clearing his head a bit. “Get me another.”
“Of course,” Xu Yin said with a smile, handing him a fresh glass.
By the end of the banquet, Shen Yanjun was drunk. But unlike most men who got chatty when drunk, he was quiet—just a little slow in his movements.
The driver dropped them off. Shen Yanjun said, “Let the driver take you home.”
Xu Yin helped steady him. “No rush. You’re this drunk—I’m worried about you.”
He wanted to refuse, but his head was foggy. In the end, he silently let her help him inside.
Lying on the bed, he felt someone bustling around him, just like the old days when he and Qingli were still married. Whenever he drank too much, she would take care of him so thoroughly that he’d wake up without a hangover.
But since their separation, he hadn’t had that kind of care in a long time.
His heart warmed. For a moment, it felt like it was Qingli by his side again. Then he felt a heat rising from his lower abdomen. As that person leaned in, he instinctively reached out and pulled them close.
A soft gasp rang out.
Shen Yanjun ignored it…
Until the next morning.
His head pounding with a hangover, he groggily opened his eyes and tried to get up to wash off the sweat clinging to his body, only to freeze.
There was someone else in the bed!
But he and Qingli had been separated for a while!
In a flash, the events of last night came rushing back. He—
“Ugh!” Shen Yanjun groaned, hitting himself in the head in frustration. He turned and looked at Xu Yin’s sleeping face. His heart sank.
This wasn’t supposed to happen.
In fact, just last night, he had been seriously thinking about retracting the divorce papers with Qingli.
And then… this happened.
Sensing his gaze, Xu Yin stirred, then slowly opened her eyes. When she saw it was him, a shy, happy smile bloomed on her face. “You’re awake.”
Everyone knew—when a man is truly drunk, he’s usually not… functional. So in her mind, since things happened, he must not have been that drunk.
But Shen Yanjun knew the truth. He had been drunk—so drunk his mind was a blur. He’d just been burning up from the alcohol and completely lost control.
He hadn’t even known who he was pulling close.
After a moment of deep thought, Shen Yanjun forced a faint smile. “I’ve got things to do today. I need to go to the office. You should rest.”
Xu Yin reached for his hand, eyes full of longing. “Stay a little longer with me?”
But his mind was in chaos. He didn’t want to linger in this moment, so he gently pulled her hand away. “I do have things to handle. If you’re not feeling well, call me.”
“Be good,” he added, patting her hand.
Xu Yin’s heart ached, but she managed a sweet smile. “Okay.”
With that, Shen Yanjun got up and left without hesitation.
Two days later, Qingli was still on set when she received a call from Shen Yanjun—he was ready to finalize the divorce.
Just two days ago at the banquet, he had looked at her like she’d cheated on him. And now he suddenly wants to get the divorce certificate? Something happened.
It didn’t take much for Qingli to guess. The only thing that could’ve made him change his tune so drastically was a development with Xu Yin.
