“We’ve been waiting for you for ages! The people at the next table have already started playing. Nobody’s allowed to leave early today!”
The speaker was Aunt Zhang, the senior activity center’s number one mahjong enthusiast. Her skills were second to none in the entire center.
“Xiao Lin, aren’t you going to introduce him to us?” Aunt Liu, sitting next to Aunt Zhang, glanced at Su Zhengxing and winked, reminding her.
“Uh… this is my…”
The words ‘boyfriend’ seemed too hot to utter. Lin Qiao choked back and forth, too embarrassed to say it in front of everyone.
“Family member.”
Su Zhengxing naturally stepped forward, put his arm around Lin Qiao’s shoulder, and lightly pinched her cheek, answering for her.
The aunties, seeing the two young lovers so intimate, all wore expressions of utter delight.
“So, Xiao Lin, will you be playing with us today, or will you send your ‘family member’ to play?”
Aunt Zhang sat down next to the automatic mahjong machine, applying hand cream as she prepared to start today’s mahjong game.
“My Xiao Lin almost abandoned her ‘family member’ today just to play mahjong. How could I dare compete with her? I’ll just observe and learn from her first.”
Su Zhengxing deliberately emphasized the word ‘family member’, subtly complaining about Lin Qiao’s attempt to leave him behind.
Lin Qiao hated green tea girls more than anything, even men. She immediately turned her mouth down in disgust and couldn’t help but roll her eyes.
Speechless!
After the four players agreed, Lin Qiao happily began her mahjong game. Her skills were actually average, but because of her youth and high concentration, coupled with nearly a thousand games of mahjong experience, she was considered above average among these aunties.
Today’s mahjong luck seemed off; after two rounds, she lost more than she won, even causing her usually relaxed eyebrows to furrow like caterpillars.
Aunt Zhang, true to her reputation as the community’s mahjong queen, boasted a 60% winning rate. After two rounds, her face was flushed.
“Looks like everyone’s getting to eat the fruit Xiao Lin bought today!” She exclaimed.
The mahjong games at the activity center are purely for leisure and entertainment, and no money is involved. However, this kind of competitive game is more fun if there is some stake involved. So they have a rule that whoever loses has to go to the fruit stand at the entrance to buy fruit and share it with everyone.
The aunties usually took good care of her, so buying them some fruit wasn’t a big deal. But Lin Qiao didn’t like the feeling of losing; after all, who sits at the mahjong table wanting to lose?
Lin Qiao puffed out her cheeks slightly, looking somewhat dejected.
Seeing her expression, Su Zhengxing sat down on the stool behind her and leaned closer.
“How about I give it a try?”
Lin Qiao was waiting for the mahjong machine to shuffle the tiles when she glanced at him, somewhat skeptical: “Do you know how?”
“I just learned a little bit about it, but I need to put it into practice.”
The other three aunties at the table, hearing he wanted to play, enthusiastically invited him.
“Come on, come on. Xiao Lin, let him play a couple of rounds. We’ll check his skills for you!”
Lin Qiao simply gave up her seat and sat on his stool to watch him play.
Su Zhengxing’s first round was still terrible; his tiles were scattered, and he couldn’t form any combinations.
Seeing how scattered his tiles were, Lin Qiao thought that he could only make Thirteen Orphans. Then he started to meld two pairs in a row, a pair of white tiles and a pair of red tiles.
