Good Dad System (Arc 7) Chapter 58.5: After Being Abducted (32)
Pei Yuanbo sat at the dining table. In front of him was a cake that looked particularly huge when he looked closer. Surrounding him, those who looked at him earnestly were his important relatives who treated him like a treasure. Because there were no lights on, the flickering light from the candles shone on their faces, so one could see their expressions particularly clearly. His mother and grandmother were both crying, and although his father had not shed any tears yet, his glasses were fogged up.
“Yuanyuan, today is the end of a new year. All bad luck will go away and good luck will come to you.” Grandma Pei muttered to herself, as if she was performing some kind of prayer ritual to the gods.
Yang Qiuping had already wiped away her tears. She nodded heavily: “After today, it will be a new year.”
It should be just an ordinary birthday, but for this family, it has been a long time since they last saw each other – as if it carries extraordinary meaning, saying goodbye to those times of mutual torture, self-blame, and blaming each other, and welcoming the days of cherishing each other and giving each other love.
“Yuanyuan, it’s time to make a wish.” Pei Naochun was the only one who could remain calm today. He smiled and clapped his hands.
“Okay.” Pei Yuanbo just got started and closed his eyes silently. Many scenes appeared in front of his eyes, overlapping and skipping.
He had vivid memories of the years when he lived with Lu’s parents and Xishun… Pei Naochun, Yang Qiuping and Grandma Pei who cried in front of him after he was found… and these few short years, less than half a year, seemed like a long time, when he was loved and treated as a treasure that needed to be handled with great care.
There are many choices to make in this world, and it is not an easy thing for him as a child. He seems to have never found the opportunity to completely remove those barriers and fully integrate into the new life.
He clasped his hands and rested his head on them—
“I hope that our family can continue to be so happy.”
Well, our home, he knows clearly where his home should be.
After opening his eyes, he took a deep breath and blew hard at the expectation of his parents, and all the candles went out. Pei Naochun, who had been waiting by the switch early, turned on the light promptly. Perhaps he had not noticed it just now, but then he realized that on the half of the table next to him, through the gauze dish cover, he could vaguely see the sumptuous dishes inside.
“Next, we have to invite our birthday boy to share the cake.” Pei Naochun handed the plastic knife provided by the cake shop to his son.
Pei Yuanbo immediately looked at his father for help: “Dad, can you help me? I don’t know how to cut it.”
Hearing his words, Pei Naochun was subconsciously stunned. He smiled and walked behind his son, half embraced him, held his hand tightly, and helped to divide the cake.
“This small piece is for grandma. Grandma can’t eat so much cream.” He directed his father in a serious manner, “Mom and Dad have to eat more, otherwise I won’t be able to finish it… and I will try to eat the rest.” He showed a sly expression. Children of this age like to eat cake the most.
“Okay, I’ll give them all to you.” Yang Qiuping replied with a smile. She secretly exchanged glances with Grandma Pei – in the past few days, Pei Yuanbo would never express his opinions unless coaxed. They all observed it themselves. Sometimes, even when something made him embarrassed, he would silently harden it.
“I’ll give you my gift later. Your mom and grandma have prepared gifts. Ask them to bring them out for you.”
After hearing this, Grandma Pei took out a gift from her back. She didn’t wrap it properly: “These are the shoes and sweater that grandma made for you. They are finally finished and will be ready for use in a few months.” She also secretly stuffed a red envelope of one thousand yuan into the sweater, which was discovered by Pei Naochun and returned to her in time.
Pei Yuanbo immediately picked one and tried it on for his grandmother to see.
He almost suffocated. Although the sweater fit him well, the collar was too, too, too small. He felt a burst of sparks and lightning. It was no exaggeration. His hair almost exploded. He managed to survive and stuff his head out.
“Grandma, isn’t the neckline a bit narrow?” he couldn’t help but say. Thinking that there might be five, six, seven or eight more sets after this, he felt that he had to fight for himself.
“You young people just don’t understand.” Grandma criticized with an experienced look on her face, “How cold is the wind in winter? Of course the collar should be narrow so that the wind doesn’t get in. Look at those popular sweaters nowadays, all of them have big holes. You won’t regret it until you get sick from the cold.”
There were also several pairs of handmade shoes. Pei Yuanbo had seen his grandmother’s shoe-making process, using a crochet hook with a curved hook. Although he didn’t quite understand the principle, his grandmother was thoughtful and made a lot of interesting little patterns on the colorful colors. He didn’t feel disgusted, but felt that all of them were made with his grandmother’s love. He put his feet in and felt like he was about to sweat. It was so warm.
“My gift is quite simple.” Yang Qiuping had prepared it in advance. She took out a box and said, “You can take a look at it when you go to your room tonight.” She pressed on the box, as if she was embarrassed.
