Chu Zhao lowered his eyes. “No need to thank me.”
The two of them were staring at each other when a soft knock on the door sounded, and Qin Zhen appeared at the doorway holding a tray. “Time to eat.”
“Okay.” Yan Qing nodded and walked over to take the tray, setting it down in the room and wheeling Chu Zhao over to the table to eat.
This was her first time eating in Chu Zhao’s room.
Chu Zhao remained quiet throughout the meal, and of course, he didn’t eat much. Yan Qing coaxed him a little and fed him some, but after that, he refused to eat anymore.
Once they were done eating, Yan Qing cleared her throat softly and then spoke, “Chu Zhao, I’m going to school. Do you know that?”
Chu Zhao pouted, clearly displeased, and looked away.
Seeing this, Yan Qing immediately tensed up and raised his chin with her hand, like a bully teasing an innocent man.
Chu Zhao was forced to lift his head. His expression didn’t change much, but it was clear he wasn’t happy.
Yan Qing thought for a moment about how to persuade him. Looking at his somewhat pitiful appearance, she suddenly had an idea. “We can talk on the phone, you know. You can still hear my voice, right?”
Chu Zhao’s eyes widened in surprise. He hadn’t thought of this.
Yan Qing shook her phone and asked, “Where’s your phone?”
Chu Zhao instinctively searched his clothes and then looked at Yan Qing innocently, shaking his head. “I don’t have it.”
Yan Qing’s lips twitched just as Chu Yang’s voice came from the door. “Here.”
A phone was handed over.
Since Yan Qing had come upstairs, Chu Yang had been secretly watching. He was afraid his brother might hurt Yan Qing again, and he also wanted to see what the normal, communicative Chu Zhao was like.
Yan Qing dialed her number on the phone and held it up to Chu Zhao’s ear. Then, holding her own phone, she asked into it, “Can you hear me?”
Chu Zhao was still a little surprised, but as the clear sound of her voice came through the phone, his lips slowly curved into a smile, and the last bit of his frustration vanished. He looked up at Yan Qing with bright eyes and said seriously, “I can hear you.”
“Great. If you ever want to hear my voice, just call me. I promise I’ll answer as long as I see the call. If I miss it, I’ll call you back as soon as I can. Is that okay?” Yan Qing asked.
Chu Zhao pressed his lips together, and after a long silence, he finally nodded. Yan Qing couldn’t help but reach out to gently stroke his head.
At this, Chu Zhao stiffened even more but obediently nodded. “Mm.”
That afternoon, Zhou Huaiya personally took Yan Qing to school, registered her, and saw her in the dorm before leaving.
Once Zhou Huaiya was gone and Yan Qing returned to her dorm, she was greeted by five girls glaring at her.
The first to speak was a girl with a half-bun hairstyle and light makeup. She wasn’t particularly pretty, but her looks improved with the makeup and hair. However, she was frowning now, her eyes full of hostility. “Didn’t we warn you? You’re not supposed to stay here this semester. Don’t you remember?”
The girl next to her, with loose hair and a hairband, also threatened with malice, “We told you that if you came back here, we’d throw your things out!”
“Oh, it’s been a semester. You’ve gotten prettier?” The last girl, a chubby short-haired girl, nudged the girl in the middle and pointed her chin toward Yan Qing, saying with ill intent.
The three girls immediately stood in front of Yan Qing, glaring at her with disgust. The other two girls didn’t speak but shared the same expression, just not as intense.
This was one of the reasons why Yan Qing decided to stay at school.
Aside from the people in her family, these three girls in her dorm had bullied her the most.
The dorm had six people, with beds on top and desks below. There were two bathrooms, making it a relatively good living environment, but there were always a few “rotten apples” that ruined the atmosphere.
The original owner was a shy girl who never disturbed anyone.
But even though she kept to herself, there were always people who disliked her. They shared a dorm, and the girls often saw her true appearance. Added to that, she was the poorest in the room, with clothes that were often torn. In their eyes, Yan Qing was like a slightly cleaner beggar, unworthy of living with them.
In the first year of high school, they only spoke ill of her occasionally. But in the second year, an incident occurred where the original owner’s love letter, secretly written to the boy she liked, was accidentally found by a boy while cleaning.
She hadn’t even dared to send it; she had only hidden it in a book, but it was discovered that day.
The boy she liked was none other than the class heartthrob, also the school’s most handsome boy—charming with pale skin, good looks, sharp eyebrows, and a little dimple on his cheek when he smiled. His bad-boy attitude was irresistible to girls, and he was someone the original owner could only admire from afar.
Once her feelings were exposed, it led to ridicule from the entire class and rejection from most of the girls, even the three in her dorm, who started to deliberately bully her after returning to the room.
They’d pour water on her bed, take over her desk, tear up her homework…
These were the mildest of their tricks. A few times, they even locked her in the dorm and later pretended not to know where she was when they were scolded.
No one punished them, and the original owner grew increasingly fearful of school and learning. So, when she was sent to the Chu family by Yan Xianhong, she stopped mentioning school altogether and never dared to talk about it.
If not for Chu Zhao’s outburst, which had completely frightened her, the original owner would never have deliberately provoked the Chu family in an attempt to leave.
After accepting the original owner’s memories, Yan Qing grew to loathe those who had harmed her.
When Zhou Huaiya had just dropped her off, Yan Qing didn’t want her to get involved, so she only let her drop off her things and left. Now that everyone had gone, it was time for her to settle scores.
Yan Qing’s gaze swept over the three girls who had bullied the original owner the most. She assessed them, thinking about where to strike to hurt the most without causing too much trouble.
