Chapter 51 – The Educated Youth’s Humble Wife

◎The scene was pure chaos◎

Yan Junsheng came back with roast duck in hand, only to run into his father at the compound gate, just returning from a work trip.

It had been a while since Yan Chengming had seen his son, and though he missed him, he didn’t say so. He just gave a cold snort.

Junsheng understood—this was his dad’s way of saying hello.

He didn’t speak either, only gave a small nod.

The two walked home side by side in silence.

They weren’t even at the door yet when a thunderous voice bellowed upstairs:
“Bai Yuehua! You shameless homewrecker! I knew you were trying to seduce my husband!”

Junsheng: “…”
Chengming: “…”

Bai Yuehua’s voice roared right back, no quieter:
“What husband of yours? Do you even know what ‘first come, first served’ means? You two got a marriage license? No? Then he’s not your husband.”

Chengming glanced at his son.

Junsheng barked, “I did get the license!”

He rushed upstairs, but as soon as he reached the bottom, he looked up to see the window fly open—two women clutching each other, half their bodies hanging out.

Junsheng’s eyes nearly split with rage. “Juan’er!” His voice shook.

Ming Ming met his gaze and faltered for a split second, guilty.

Junsheng: “?”

No time to think—he bolted up the stairs.

Ming Ming and Bai Yuehua ducked back in.
“Hurry, hurry, they’re back.”
“So… keep going?”
“Keep going! Only a few people heard just now. The neighbors haven’t even reacted yet.”
“Oh, okay.”

Ming Ming double-checked the door lock, then flashed Bai Yuehua an OK hand sign. Yuehua leaned out the window again and shouted at the top of her lungs:
“Chen Chanjuan, you’re just some country bumpkin! Yan Junsheng and I are the perfect match. We both studied abroad together! We understand each other—soulmates who can read each other’s minds with just a look!”

Junsheng’s furious voice thundered from the hall:
“Bullshit! Who the hell’s your soulmate?”

Ming Ming jumped at the sound and pressed against the door. Bai Yuehua yanked her aside, and they both heard Junsheng, trying to hold back his anger, lower his voice eight notches to apologize to someone nearby:
“Sorry, Auntie, I wasn’t talking about you.”

Ming Ming whispered, “Your mom’s already here. Your dad isn’t?”
“No idea, I didn’t see him come out.”
“Then we keep going.”
“Okay!”

Ming Ming raised her voice again:
“You’ve been chasing this for years with no result—it’s proof you two aren’t meant to be! A forced melon won’t be sweet, and a forced marriage won’t last! Stop dreaming of cutting into our love!”

As she yelled, she scribbled fresh lines onto paper for Yuehua.

Bai Yuehua glanced at them and recited, “Why do you think latecomers get the upper hand? Only because the early bird didn’t fight for it!”

She winced and muttered, “This line is so clunky—it gave me goosebumps.”
“Doesn’t matter,” Ming Ming waved her off. “The cheesier it is, the better the effect!”

Junsheng pounded on the door, roaring, “Open up!”

Madam Bai, worried about face, hissed through her teeth:
“Yuehua, are you insane? What are you doing? Carrying on like this just makes our whole family a laughingstock!”

At that, Bai Yuehua sneered, muttering to herself, “Oh, so when you tricked me into going to the hospital to pick a fight, that was fine. But now that I’m actually doing it, you’re embarrassed?”

She lowered her voice to Ming Ming:
“See? Their first reaction is always about saving face. Bet you anything when my dad shows up, the first thing out of his mouth will be scolding me for being ‘shameful.’”

Ming Ming patted her back soothingly.
“Don’t get mad. Since they want to see us fight, let’s give them the show of a lifetime. If anyone loses face, it’ll be them. We’ll stick to the plan.”

Yuehua shouted toward the window again:
“You think just because I’m from the countryside I can’t fight you city folks? I can’t even be bothered with his parents!”

Junsheng: “…”
His mother: “…”

“And you think being from the city means you can’t throw a tantrum? Today I’ll show you exactly what I can do—” Yuehua cracked the window wider.

Thump! Thump!

“Oh no, your husband’s kicking the door now! When did he get this strong? Can the door even take it?”

Ming Ming stammered, “H-hard to say… he’s built well, and strong too…”

Yuehua gave her a blank stare. “Who asked you that? Why are you blushing?”

“…” Ming Ming glanced down the stairs to change the subject. “Your dad! He’s out! And there are two young guys with him.”

“The younger one’s my brother. The other’s that so-called comrade’s son.” Yuehua curled her lip. “And he had the nerve to barge into my bedroom and sit on my bed. Gross. Like my family can’t afford an extra chair.”

Ming Ming critiqued, “Still, not as handsome as Yan Junsheng. He dominates this love triangle.”
“What triangle?” Yuehua asked blankly.
“Never mind, keep going.”

“Oh, your dad stopped. Someone’s talking to him.”
“It’s Uncle Wang from next door. He lives farther off, so if he heard, then everyone’s heard. Perfect, sis—I’m about to be famous!” Yuehua said proudly.

Ming Ming suddenly rummaged around for something. “Quick, quick, here—stash this in your pocket.”
“No good, this pocket’s too shallow. If my dad hits me and it falls out, we’re screwed.”
“Use your belt, tie it on—hey, don’t drop it! Wait, wait… that spot looks weird, like you’ve grown a… you know.”
Yuehua’s face twitched. “And it’s way too small. Forget it, hand it back when I get thrown out.”

“Fine, fine…” They fumbled with the gold bar, but it slipped from Yuehua’s pant leg and clattered to the ground.
“Ah!”

The pounding on the door grew louder, the wood rattling violently.

Ming Ming dropped down, snatched it up, and had just stood when Junsheng kicked the door open.

The scene played out like a slow-motion movie: the lock gave, the door swung wide, revealing Junsheng’s frantic face, with Madam Bai and Madam Yan pale as paper right behind him.

In a flash, Ming Ming stuffed the gold bar back into Yuehua’s pocket.

The next second, Junsheng stormed in, yanked Ming Ming behind him, and rounded on Yuehua, ready to confront her.

From where the mothers couldn’t see, Ming Ming secretly pinched his waist.

Junsheng frowned back at her. “?”

She winked hard.

Junsheng nearly choked on his own breath. He finally realized—these two were staging this whole act together.

If it had been real, he’d know how to handle it. But fake? He had no idea how to play along.

Ming Ming leaned close and whispered, “Don’t say a word.”

Fine. He had his assignment.

Silence is golden.

The next moment, Ming Ming and Yuehua locked eyes, then, with Junsheng caught between them, pointed fingers in each other’s faces and started screaming.

The shouting was so loud and rapid-fire, Junsheng couldn’t even follow what they were saying—except for the moments when his Juan’er slipped into dialect.

She rarely spoke dialect. And whenever she did… it meant she was absolutely brimming with mischief.

Sure enough, in the middle of all the yelling and scolding, Ming Ming suddenly let out a shout that cut through the noise like thunder:
