Feng Guang shook her head. “No, when I moved in, it was just An Tong at home.”
“Isn’t it strange that only Mr. An is at the An family? His mother has never shown up.”
“What’s so strange about that? Look at my family; I haven’t seen my mom in a month. She leaves for work before I get up and comes home only after I’ve gone to bed. Lately, she’s even been staying at the office. I can’t even get her on the phone. The world of a strong woman—I just don’t understand.”
Okay… Li Bi realized he shouldn’t have asked that question. He changed the topic. “Miss Xia, do you think there’s anything wrong with Mr. An?”
“There is! Too many things!”
Both Li Bi and the little sidekick grew serious. “What’s wrong with him?”
“His voice could make ears pregnant, his smile makes me dizzy, and every time he says my name, I feel completely drained.”
The sidekick leaned closer to Li Bi. “Captain Li, this girl is infatuated.”
Li Bi nodded instinctively. He had seen infatuation before, but never to this extent. He put away his notebook and kindly warned, “Little girl, this Mr. An isn’t as simple as you think.”
“Of course! He’s a man of depth.”
Li Bi swallowed hard, casting a rather pitying look before leaving with his sidekick, realizing he had hoped to get some information from her but had been overly optimistic.
Feng Guang pouted at their departing figures and ran back home. Her dad had set her curfew at seven. Although she wasn’t afraid of him, facing a grumpy face would still put her in a bad mood.
Meanwhile, in a corner unbeknownst to her, rumors spread rapidly overnight. Ever since someone saw a police visit, gossip about An Tong killing his mother circulated like wildfire. The speed of the gossip was faster than the aunties in the square dancing to a new song. Some kept their distance from the An family, while others brought like-minded friends to speculate, eager to play detective. As a result, An Tong, who usually didn’t go out much, became even more isolated.
“You shouldn’t come looking for me anymore.”
Feng Guang accidentally pricked her hand on the thorn of the red rose she was picking. Before she could cry out in pain, she turned around and asked, “Why?”
An Tong sighed, grabbing a band-aid from the table with one hand while holding her hand with the other, carefully applying the band-aid without hurting her. “You know, being associated with me right now isn’t a good idea.”
“If I don’t associate with you, things will be even worse for me!”
“Feng Guang.”
“Don’t try to change my mind. I know your domestic help hasn’t come anymore; having a family doctor is just a lie. You’re all alone. What will you do without me?” Feng Guang stood up, looking down at the young man in the wheelchair, trying to sound more commanding.
An Tong chuckled at her words. “I can manage just fine without you.”
“You’re lying! Every time I come over, if the weather is nice, you sit in the yard soaking up the sun, staring at a flower for ages. If it rains, you sit by the glass window watching the raindrops fall. Don’t you know that every time I see you sitting there quietly, it hurts my heart?”
An Tong’s eyes sparkled as he asked, “Feng Guang, are you spying on me?”
She replied defiantly, “Yes, I am. What’s wrong with that?”
Whenever she saw him alone, she felt an impulse to stand by his side.
“I never knew…” An Tong pressed his forehead wearily. “You have such a hobby.”
“Don’t worry, I didn’t peek when you were bathing or changing clothes. I have my principles.”
He strangely felt he should be relieved, suppressing the light in his eyes. A smile of deep melancholy spread across his face. “My life has been stolen, lacking all vibrant colors. This is my world, Feng Guang. You shouldn’t step into it.”
