That night, his mother was in the kitchen preparing dinner when he received a call from their family doctor. The doctor had been dismissed for an inconsequential reason and was now calling to demand money.

An Tong hung up without saying a word. He smiled as he finished the birthday cake with his mother, listening to her share amusing stories from his childhood. Sometimes, he would jokingly argue against her teasing him about his childhood mistakes, and other times, they would laugh together, reminiscing about unforgettable memories. Every meal at the An household was filled with warmth; she was the most devoted mother, and he was the most understanding child.

The next day, he transferred money to the former family doctor.

Having visited various hospitals, none of which could identify his condition, and having switched family doctors multiple times because each one failed to improve his health, An Wan would dismiss them every few months. An Tong accepted all of this with a smile. His body was in pain, the medication was bitter, and the hospital smelled awful, but he never complained.

While An Wan was at work, he wheeled himself into the study, a place he had never been before. There was a locked drawer, and using a duplicate key, he opened it. In the darkest corner lay various medications—immunosuppressants, osteoporosis drugs, and others for mental confusion… too many to count. An Tong lacked the patience to examine them all. He returned everything to its original state and came out of the study, waiting to greet his mother with the sincerest smile at the end of her workday.

“Feng Guang, do you think a mother can truly sacrifice herself to protect her child?” An Tong asked, confusion etched on his face. “Why doesn’t my mother want to?”

He felt regret and sighed, knowing that ultimately, it would fall to him to take action.

Feng Guang replied, “Everyone is different. Some people are willing to sacrifice their closest ones for themselves, while others would go to any lengths to protect those they love.”

“And what about you? Which type are you?”

“As long as it’s someone I love, whether they stand in the sunlight or in a moldy corner, I will stand with them.”

An Tong plucked a red rose and whispered, “Even if it gets stained with blood?”
