Han Chen smiled. “Even in marriage, a husband has no right to force his wife to do anything. And in your case… you’re only engaged. You know as well as I do that an engagement can be broken off easily enough, isn’t that right?”
Gu Lan opened his mouth to speak, but Han Chen cut him off again.
“Besides, it seems to me that your real interest lies more with Mu Jin. Tell me, Gu Lan—are you just toying with her, without ever considering actually breaking off your engagement?”
That was a sharp question. No matter how Gu Lan answered, it would paint him as a jerk. If he said he’d break off the engagement for another woman, he was scum. If he admitted he only wanted to fool around with Mu Jin without breaking it off, he was still scum.
Mu Jin stared at him quietly. She didn’t want to admit it, but she was waiting for his answer.
True to form, Gu Lan straightened his back. He was fearless—the kind of leading man who would sacrifice anything for the heroine. “I never intended to toy with Mu Jin. She’s the one I love.”
The crowd erupted in an uproar.
Mu Jin’s eyes widened, caught somewhere between touched and shocked.
And poor Wu Min, who had confessed to Mu Jin that very day, found himself dumped on the spot.
Safe behind Han Chen, Feng Guang clicked her tongue twice. “Bold move.”
She looked so approving that she was only a step away from clapping her hands, completely ignoring the sympathetic looks the crowd cast her way.
Gu Lan said coldly, “Xia Fengguang, I will break off our engagement.”
“Well, that’s just perfect,” Feng Guang said with a sweet smile. “But remember—you’re the one who said it. If you say it, you’d better follow through.”
Gu Lan glanced at her, then at Han Chen, his tone full of mockery. “Do you think I’m some coward who’s afraid of what people think? Whatever I want to do, I do, no matter how others see it.”
“Of course,” Han Chen replied with a faint, ironic smile. “After all, Gu Lan, you’re a man of deep feelings and great loyalty.” The words dripped with sarcasm. Only moments ago, Gu Lan had declared he’d betray his engagement and abandon his fiancée.
Granted, that fiancée didn’t seem the least bit upset—in fact, she looked rather pleased.
Even so, Mu Jin didn’t want to bear the stigma. “Wait… Gu Lan, don’t be crazy! Feng Guang is your fiancée. You can’t just break off the engagement like this!”
For him to announce so publicly that he’d do it for her—yes, Gu Lan had said before that he had no feelings for Xia Fengguang, but with all these watching eyes, Mu Jin couldn’t help but feel like she’d been cast in the role of the other woman.
Gu Lan’s temper flared. His voice dropped cold. “Mu Jin, don’t be naive. Even if I didn’t say it, Feng Guang would end things sooner or later!”
Caught off guard by being called out, Feng Guang blinked. “Huh?”
“Xia Fengguang, do you think I don’t know? You and Han Chen are already a couple. You’ve been together for a while! That day in the hallway—you were hugging, weren’t you?”
The onlookers thought: What a rollercoaster—this plot twists more than a soap opera!
Han Chen simply smiled.
No one could predict how much gossip this fiasco of a party would stir up.
By Saturday, Feng Guang was at the hospital. As she kept a certain boy company, she recounted the week’s drama with a touch of exasperation.
After listening, Han Qi, propped up in his hospital bed, gave her a gentle smile. “It sounds like you and Han Chen are awfully close.”
Feng Guang felt a chill run down her back as she peeled an apple.
