The trip to the mortal world was settled just like that.
By rule, people of the heavens weren’t allowed to descend to the mortal world at will. Anyone who wished to go had to first submit a token to the Grand Supreme Elder Lord, and only with his approval could they descend. Otherwise, those who went down in secret would face the punishment of Heaven’s thunder.
But someone like Su Fa—if he wanted to bring Fengguang down with him—no one would dare stop him, even if he didn’t report to the Grand Supreme Elder Lord.
They arrived smoothly without a single obstacle. Walking through the bustling marketplace, Fengguang still felt a little lost. After spending so long in the cold, quiet heavens, she wasn’t used to this kind of lively scene.
Su Fa bought a skewer of candied hawthorn and placed it in her hand. The corners of his eyes lifted as he smiled.
“This time, Fengguang, you’re only allowed one skewer. I don’t want you crying about a toothache again like last time.”
“Last time?” She instinctively took a bite, blinked, and mumbled through the sweetness, “What last time?”
“Oh, that’s right—you’ve forgotten everything from before.” He raised his hand, gently wiping away the sticky sugar from the corner of her lips. “A long time ago, I brought you to this very street. You begged and pestered me to buy you candied hawthorn. I couldn’t bring myself to refuse, so I let you eat four or five skewers. In the end, you were clutching your jaw, whining about the pain. My heart ached for you, of course, but honestly, I wanted to tell you that you brought it upon yourself.”
He chuckled at the memory. Fengguang forced out a dry laugh. “I do know I love eating… especially sweets. That’s just a habit I can’t break.”
“There’s no need to change,” Su Fa said. “Eat whatever you want. As long as you don’t overdo it, I’ll be there to watch out for you. It’s fine.”
“I get it… but I don’t need you watching over me. I’m not going to torture my teeth.” For once, she spoke with a hint of defiance, irritated at the way he was talking to her as though she were a child.
“Well, if you end up with another toothache, I won’t be able to help you,” he teased lightly. Still, he reached out to take her hand, his voice softening. “I remember there used to be an inn up ahead where we once stayed. It’s been over a hundred years now—I wonder if it’s still there.”
“We came to the mortal world over a hundred years ago?”
“Yes. Or perhaps even earlier than that…” His words trailed off, his eyes lowering slightly into silence.
Fengguang studied him for a while, waiting for him to finish. When he didn’t, she asked directly, “Why did you stop talking?”
Su Fa smiled faintly. “I just thought of how we used to be… it brought back a lot of feelings.”
“How we used to be… oh, right. I heard that I was once a student at the Celestial Academy, and you were a teacher there.”
He nodded. “That’s right.”
“Then we really were in a teacher-student romance?”
“Teacher-student romance… mm, that’s actually quite an accurate name.” Su Fa first affirmed the phrase, then added, “Yes, we truly were in a teacher-student romance.”
“Then tell me—how did we end up together?”
They continued walking as they talked.
“That’s a very interesting story,” Su Fa said, lips curving into a smile so captivating that quite a few girls on the street couldn’t stop themselves from stealing glances at him. He didn’t seem to notice.
But Fengguang did. She huffed to herself inwardly—mortals really were creatures of the eyes. Then again, she admitted, she herself cared about appearances too…
