It had just been a joke on her part, but Naihe never admitted how seriously he’d taken it—how it had lingered in his mind ever since.
When Feng Guang asked him if he had purposely fetched the wrong soul that day, he didn’t know how to respond. Because she was right—he had done it on purpose.
Naihe was born lacking three senses. He couldn’t perceive color or recognize human faces. He didn’t remember people by appearance—only by the feeling they gave him. But she had been different. When they first met at the Bridge of Forgetfulness, the moment she said that bold, teasing line, something about her stuck with him. For a brief moment, her face was unforgettable.
But that moment didn’t last. Heaven’s punishment didn’t bend for a single person. Slowly, he forgot what she looked like, forgot the color of her clothes that day… He couldn’t remember any of it.
For the past five hundred years, one habit Naihe had formed was standing alone in the sea of red spider lilies, watching the drifting soul-butterflies and the flowers in full bloom. He often wondered—what did that woman look like?
Then one day, when he came to the mortal world to collect a soul, he saw Feng Guang—and in that instant, he remembered. So this is what she looked like…
And in that same instant, he brought her back to the Underworld.
This was the deepest secret he had ever kept. He had never told anyone. Naihe still didn’t fully understand why he paid so much attention to this woman. All he knew was that, over these endless centuries, she was the only one who ever stirred his heart.
When Feng Guang saw that he wasn’t speaking, she slapped the snake tail coiled around her.
“Naihe! You did it on purpose, didn’t you?”
Naihe shifted the tail slightly and pulled her tightly into his arms. He patted her back but still didn’t say a word. His silence, however, said everything.
Feng Guang twitched her lips and suddenly realized—his snake tail could be used to restrain her. She’d always been afraid of snakes, but seeing this man wrapping his tail around her now… Why did she feel… kind of excited?
No way she’d admit she had a thing for beast-human hybrids.
“You’re wrapping me too tight. I can’t breathe!” she complained.
Naihe paused. His tail loosened just slightly—barely enough.
“…So how long do you plan to keep me trapped like this?” she asked.
It was already one or two in the morning.
He gently patted her head. “You tired?”
“No shit! Do you even realize how much trauma I’ve gone through tonight?”
For some reason, now that she had her memories back—and now that she knew this man liked her—suddenly, she wasn’t afraid of anything anymore. Maybe this was what people meant when they said: once you know someone likes you, you can start acting all fearless and shameless.
Naihe buried his face into the crook of her neck, brushing against her skin like a snake.
“I like the warmth of your body.”
Snakes were cold-blooded, and Naihe was no exception. His body temperature was much lower than a normal person. Feng Guang, being a ghost, technically had no body heat at all. And yet somehow, it was like he could feel her warmth—and it was comforting.
His touch tickled, and Feng Guang squirmed. She felt like he was using both hands and his tail to wrap around her, and if anyone walked in right now, they’d probably shout something like: “Damn, what an intense scene!”
Honestly, she kind of felt the same way.
