“I’ve already looked into everything,” Lü Meng said. “She was a student at our university too—a junior this year—her name was Tang Xiaole. She was known as one of the campus beauties from the senior class. She was in our family’s hospital because of a car accident not long ago, and she was supposed to be discharged in a few days. “She committed suicide?” Feng Guang asked.

“That’s what the police said,” Lü Meng replied. “But a lot of people are whispering that she was murdered.” She lowered her voice and gestured toward a boy sitting in the front row. “Feng Guang, look—that’s Tang Xiaole’s boyfriend, Zhao Yi. They’d been together since high school, super close. Now look at the girl sitting next to him…”

Feng Guang glanced at the handsome young man, then at the beautiful woman beside him, who kept leaning closer to him every so often. “Zhao Yi moved on already?”

“No, it’s that girl who’s been chasing after him,” Lü Meng explained. “She’s the daughter of the police chief here in A City—her name’s Chen Haitang. Her family is super influential. She’s been going after Zhao Yi since freshman year, but he’s never paid her any attention because he only liked Tang Xiaole. Still, Chen Haitang never gave up. People are saying she might’ve had something to do with Tang Xiaole’s death.”

Sure enough, Zhao Yi looked like he was at his breaking point. When Chen Haitang leaned in one more time, he picked up his books and walked out of the classroom. As he passed the doorway, Feng Guang caught a glimpse of his exhausted, hollow expression. Not long after, Chen Haitang followed him out.

“I mean, say what you will—Zhao Yi did love Tang Xiaole. After she died, he stayed holed up in the lab for days without sleeping or eating, burying himself in work to numb the pain. I bet he despises Chen Haitang now. But with her family background, what can he even do about it?”

Feng Guang, meanwhile, was still turning one phrase over in her mind: Tang Xiaole and Zhao Yi were really in love. She shoved the pile of snacks back into Lü Meng’s arms. “Cutie, I’ve got something to do. I’m skipping this class. Cover for me, okay?”

“Hey, Feng Guang!” Lü Meng called after her.

But Feng Guang was already out the door. Zhao Yi was nowhere to be seen, but she wasn’t ready to give up. There was only one path out of this teaching building, so she followed it. Since class had already started, and the building was one of the older ones, the path was empty.

She let out a helpless sigh, only then realizing her shoelace had come undone. As she bent down to tie it, she suddenly heard some noises in the distance. Her curiosity piqued, she hunched low and crept forward a few steps. The sounds from the bushes ahead became clearer—labored breathing from a man, and stifled moans from a woman.

Really now… This was the kind of scene that got the blood pumping.

She carefully parted the leafy shrubs and peeked through, only to see a couple engaged in some very intimate physical activity behind a tree. Disappointingly, it wasn’t Zhao Yi and Chen Haitang like she’d suspected. She blinked and plopped down on the grass with a long sigh.

Then a low male voice said next to her, “Today’s flavor is caramel. Want some?”

A hand extended a bag of sunflower seeds toward her.

She glanced at the seeds, then at the man’s face. Her mouth twitched. “You again?”
