When Feng Guang heard Nan Xiaoxiao’s words, she paused for a moment.
“If you had to choose,” she asked quietly, “between going home and staying with Yan Yu…?”

“I want to go home… I do…” Nan Xiaoxiao began to cry. “I miss my mom and dad, and those days back when you and I just went to class and fooled around together. This—this isn’t the life I wanted at all.”

Feng Guang was silent for a while. Then she sat beside her friend and patted her back to comfort her.

Unlike Feng Guang, who had already traveled through several worlds, Nan Xiaoxiao had been an ordinary college student. At first, this place felt fresh and exciting, but after a while, she naturally started to miss her family and friends, just like Feng Guang had during her first transmigration: nervous, uneasy, and homesick.

Nan Xiaoxiao didn’t understand where that confidence came from, but in her despair, any shred of hope was worth clinging to. She still had one worry she couldn’t let go.

“Guang Guang… if Xu Wang comes back, could you—could you ask him to spare Yan Yu?”

“Why?”

Nan Xiaoxiao struggled for words. “I know Yan Yu and Chen Yu plotted together—that makes him one of the people who hurt Xu Wang. But he’s also saved my life more than once… Even if I’ve decided to leave him, I still owe him.”

Xu Wang’s power was terrifying; Nan Xiaoxiao had learned as much from Yan Yu’s explanations. If someone as cautious as Yan Yu feared him, then Xu Wang had to be unbeatable. She simply couldn’t stand by and watch Yan Yu die.

“He won’t kill Yan Yu,” Feng Guang said.

“Really?” Nan Xiaoxiao asked, confused.

Feng Guang nodded. “I know Xu Wang. He won’t kill him.”

What she didn’t say was that Xu Wang never killed anyone—he just made sure they wound up taking their own lives.

Nan Xiaoxiao didn’t know that detail. Feeling her last burden lifted, she finally relaxed about leaving Yan Yu.

Feng Guang’s stubborn certainty left Nan Xiaoxiao with a headache—her friend was wonderful but could be unbelievably single-minded. Once she set her mind, ten oxen couldn’t drag her back.

Nan Xiaoxiao wanted to keep persuading her, but Feng Guang sighed. “Xiaoxiao, did you think they wouldn’t bug my room?”

“I’m the woman connected to Xu Wang,” Feng Guang went on. “You think Chen Yu and Yan Yu wouldn’t be monitoring me, just to make sure Xu Wang hasn’t left any tricks behind?”

She suspected that although Chen Yu had sworn Xu Wang was dead, even he couldn’t be certain. He’d admitted Xu Wang’s genes were too strong; an explosion alone might not do it—after all, this was the man who had wiped out an entire planet.

Inside another room, Chen Yu watched the surveillance feed and smiled faintly, lifting a glass of wine the color of blood.
People die sooner or later, he mused. What difference does a little sooner make?

Feng Guang spent three days under soft confinement in Chen Yu’s estate. Everyone treated her with the utmost courtesy because she was a female Omega, but no one would let her leave. On the fourth day, Chen Yu decided to take her back to the imperial capital, turning her over to the state, as a female Omega was a national treasure.

Yan Yu traveled with them, escorting the group onto a starship bristling with guards. Nan Xiaoxiao kept looking for chances to escape with Feng Guang, but on a vessel in deep space, there was nowhere to run.

“Guang Guang… I don’t want to love him anymore.” Nan Xiaoxiao sat on Feng Guang’s bunk, her voice low.

Feng Guang knew who “him” meant, but still asked, “Why?”

“Yan Yu’s awful. He’s got this macho streak… Sure, he treated me well, but he locked me up and lied to me. I can’t take that. I do like him—but I love my freedom more.”

Feng Guang thought for a second, then said, “You deserve to live exactly how you want.”

Nan Xiaoxiao looked at her gratefully, but was still worried.

“Guang Guang… if Xu Wang comes back, can we… can we please leave this place together?”

“We will,” Feng Guang promised.

The starship cruised silently for an hour. Just as they were about to slingshot past Venus, a familiar insect chatter rolled across the blackness. Feng Guang’s pulse leapt. She slid off the bed and pressed her face to the viewport, watching the tide of Zerg swarm toward the ship. Her heart pounded.
