Nan Xiaoxiao glanced at the couple not far away, lost in their world of sweet affection, then looked over at the injured Yan Yu. She had no idea what to do now. Doubt suddenly crept into her heart—the man holding Feng Guang’s hand looked like he cherished her down to his very bones. He didn’t seem at all like the cold-blooded killer Yan Yu had described.
Yan Yu, of course, noticed the flicker of doubt in Nan Xiaoxiao’s eyes. He let out a long, weary sigh. The pain from his shoulder and chest wounds was unbearable, but even worse was the sting of her distrust.
He gripped Nan Xiaoxiao’s hand tightly and murmured through clenched teeth,
“Hold on to me. I’m going to try a spatial jump.”
Before Nan Xiaoxiao could say a word, a whirlwind of fallen leaves kicked up around them. In the blink of an eye, the two of them vanished from the castle.
A moment later, the kiss between Feng Guang and Xu Wang finally came to an end—mostly because she was running out of breath.
Xu Wang gently stroked her hair, its soft texture stirring his heart.
“See? I’m right here with you. So… don’t cry anymore.”
“I…” She hiccupped through her sobs, “Xu Wang…”
Seeing how hard it was for her to speak, Xu Wang quickly patted her back and held her tightly in his arms.
“I’m here. Take your time. No rush.”
“They… they’re gone…” she said, looking from the circle of his arms to the spot where Nan Xiaoxiao and Yan Yu had just stood. It was now empty.
Xu Wang had already noticed when Yan Yu left with Nan Xiaoxiao, but he’d chosen to stay focused on comforting the woman in his arms. That was what mattered most. Now that Feng Guang brought it up again, he asked in a tone full of indulgence,
“Do you want me to bring them back for you?”
“Bring them back?” She looked up at him, her eyes still red and glistening with tears. “What for?”
“Whatever Feng Guang wants to do, that’s what we’ll do,” he replied. “I know I found you because they abandoned you when their ship took off. So if you’re still angry about that…”
Then killing them wouldn’t be a problem. After all, wasn’t there once a king who lit beacon fires to make a beauty smile? If that’s what it took to please the woman he loved, Xu Wang figured taking a few lives was no big deal.
He had never killed with his own hands before—but for Feng Guang, he’d be willing to make an exception.
Who could’ve guessed that upon hearing this, Feng Guang would suddenly stand on tiptoe and, in a burst of emotion, bite his chin.
“I’m the one who found you! Don’t think I don’t know—you were the one I met back then, weren’t you? That so-called Xiao Xiao—it was you, wasn’t it?”
She’d only mentioned Yan Yu and Nan Xiaoxiao’s disappearance in passing, never expecting him to bring up their first meeting.
“Yes… and no,” Xu Wang said cryptically, then pointed at his lips.
“Next time you want to bite something, bite here instead.”
“Be serious!” she huffed. “What do you mean by ‘yes and no’? Wasn’t that version of Xiao Xiao just you?”
Seeing her finally snap out of her sorrow and return to her lively self, Xu Wang was relieved. He gave her another kiss, soft and lingering, before saying,
“Come on. I’ll take you to my toy room.”
“Toy room?” She blinked in confusion. He didn’t seem like the childish type at all.
Xu Wang chuckled and took her hand, pressing a kiss to the back of it.
“You’ll understand when we get there.”
In that moment, he looked just like a little boy eager to share his hidden treasures with someone he liked.
Feng Guang had never seen this side of him before, and her heart fluttered. She nodded sweetly.
“Okay.”
Still, Xu Wang couldn’t help asking again,
“Are you sure you don’t want me to bring them back?”
In his eyes, a woman so deeply loved should never have to endure even the smallest slight.
