As promised, on the seventh day of the New Year, two guests from the Xia family arrived: fifteen-year-old Fu Yao and his father. When they entered, his father was whisked away into the study with Xia Chao, leaving Fu Yao to deal with Feng Guang and the rest of the younger generation.
Feng Guang didn’t like him, so she sat far away with her yogurt in hand. Coincidentally, Fu Yao didn’t like her either. Like most boys his age, he wasn’t interested in hanging out with younger girls. Despite his usual aloof demeanor, he was still just a kid, with the typical temperament of one.
Unlike Feng Guang, who was younger and more oblivious, Fu Yao was fully aware of why his father had brought him here today. He resented having his life arranged for him and, by association, disliked Feng Guang too.
The two of them sat in silence in the living room for a long time. Feng Guang finished her yogurt and stood up to go get another one from her room. Fu Yao, misunderstanding her intent, immediately snapped with a cold expression, “Stay away from me.”
Feng Guang gave him a confused look, not understanding why he thought she wanted to get close to him. As the pampered young lady of the Xia family, she had her pride. She huffed and replied, “Like I’d want to get close to you.”
“You’d better not,” the boy replied coolly, shooting her a glance before falling silent again.
Feng Guang muttered under her breath, calling him a weirdo, and decided to ignore her father’s instructions to be a good host. She headed upstairs.
Shortly after she disappeared, Ji You came back inside from building a snowman, holding Ji Mian’s hand.
When Ji Mian saw a stranger sitting in the living room, he immediately understood who it was and offered a polite smile. “Hi, I’m Feng Guang’s older brother.”
Ji You echoed cheerfully, “I’m Feng Guang’s little sister!”
Though Fu Yao was cold by nature, he wasn’t rude. Facing two smiling faces, he stood up straight and replied seriously, “Hello, I’m Fu Yao.”
“You’re the big brother who’s supposed to play with my sister!” Ji You circled him and added, “Sister was right—you are cool!”
Influenced by Feng Guang, Ji You’s idea of “cool” was someone cold and unfriendly. But to Fu Yao, “cool” meant handsome. Internally, he scoffed—so that little girl pretended not to like him, but in the end, she was just like all the others, thinking he looked good?
So young and already playing hard to get. Fu Yao liked Feng Guang even less now.
Ji Mian asked, “Feng Guang isn’t here keeping you company?”
“I don’t need her to,” Fu Yao replied coldly, his disdain clear.
Ji Mian smiled politely:”Feng Guang is still young. It’s true she and Young Master Fu probably don’t have much to talk about.”
Hearing someone agree with him made Fu Yao feel a bit better—until Ji Mian added, “I’m quite a bit older than you too, so I guess we wouldn’t have much to talk about either. I’ll head back to my room.”
…Why did that not sound like a compliment?
Ji Mian asked Ji You, “Do you want to stay here and keep Young Master Fu company?”
“Nope!” Ji You ran over to her brother. “I’m going to play with Sister.”
“Alright, let’s go upstairs.”
Ji Mian and Ji You went up together, leaving Fu Yao alone in the living room once again.
For the first time, Fu Yao felt like… a lot of people didn’t want him around.
