That winter brought a heavy snowfall. A blanket of white covered the entire city. For the children, it turned every corner into a playground, but for adults with long-distance travel plans, it was a real headache.

Ji Mian stepped out of the driver’s car and gazed at the snow-covered Xia estate. Aside from the fresh white snow, everything looked just as he remembered. In the courtyard, he saw Ji You building a snowman.

She was out in the snow alone, completely absorbed in her play. When she noticed a shadow fall over her, she looked up—and the moment she saw the brother she had missed so dearly, she jumped up in excitement.

“Big Brother! You’re back!”

Ji Mian caught her as she leaped into his arms. “Looks like you’ve gotten taller again, Xiao You.”

“Of course I have! You haven’t seen me in half a year!”

He ruffled her hair gently. “Why are you out here by yourself? Isn’t Fengguang usually with you?”

The two of them looked around and eventually spotted what looked like a moving snowman under a tree. Looking closer, it wasn’t a snowman at all—it was a girl in a thick white coat who had fallen in the snow. She was so bundled up that she hadn’t been able to get back on her feet.

Watching her struggle to get up over and over without success, Ji Mian couldn’t help but find it both pitiful and amusing. In a rare moment of kindness, he walked over, slipped his hands under her arms, and effortlessly lifted her up. A cloud of snow fell off her heavy coat.

After struggling for so long, Fengguang let out a huge sigh of relief once she was back on her feet. She’d been exhausted.

Behind her, the man who had helped her chuckled softly.

She tried to turn around, but her oversized hood blocked her view. So she raised a mitten-covered hand and pulled it off. Her hair was a bit messy, and when she saw who was behind her, she froze for a moment. “Big Brother… you look even better than before.”

The tall, slim young man set her down gently and reached out to wipe the tiny droplets that had formed on her long lashes from melting snow. “You’ve gotten heavier, though.”

With all the clothes she had on, she did look like a walking snowball.

“That’s because I hate the cold!”

“Because Xiao You wanted to play outside. I promised you I’d take care of her, so I came out with her…”

Ji Mian paused, hand still resting on her head. “That’s the only reason?”

“Yep. I said I would, and I always keep my promises. But…”

She looked troubled again, and he asked, “But what?”

“I gave you all my savings… I don’t have any money left to take care of you.”

The faint light in Ji Mian’s eyes stilled for a moment. Then, with a calm expression, he replied, “That’s okay. I can take care of myself now. So this doesn’t count as breaking your promise, Fengguang.”
