Feng Guang said, “Senior Brother, it’s always been your responsibility to oversee the new disciples.”
In other words, it had nothing to do with her.
“I know that,” Shang Bai Zi replied. “But this year’s batch is different. They all heard that Master bestowed the Han Yuan Sword upon you, and now they’re making a huge fuss about meeting you.”
“I have great confidence in your ability to calm children.”
“Ah, Junior Sister, don’t be so cold and heartless. I prefer to drift through a sea of flowers without letting a single leaf cling to me. Babysitting children has never been my thing, but as the eldest senior brother, I must take on some of these tedious tasks.” He spoke as if he were a truly responsible man.
But Feng Guang remained unmoved. “Senior Brother, the more capable you are, the more work you should do.”
“Junior Sister, you really won’t come with me? There are quite a few handsome young boys among this year’s new disciples. Who knows? Maybe one of them will catch your eye, and you can train him into the perfect companion.”
“You’d best not let Master hear you say that.”
“I trust you, Junior Sister.” Shang Bai Zi draped an arm over her shoulder. “You were never the tattletale type. Remember back in the day when I secretly snuck down the mountain to visit a brothel? You even covered for me with Master.”
Feng Guang gave him a sidelong glance. “So that night, you did go to a brothel.”
“Ahem… well, you see, brothels are just places for drinking tea.” Thinking his junior sister, who had never left the sect, wouldn’t understand what a brothel was, he quickly tried to bluff his way through. Then, he hastily changed the subject. “Come on, Junior Sister, don’t be so stubborn. I know you’ve always liked children. Let’s go, let’s go. Come meet these little brats with me.”
Before she could protest, he grabbed her hand and dragged her toward the Taiji Square. Feng Guang briefly considered using a lightning technique to zap him, but for the sake of their many years of camaraderie, she decided to let it slide.
Every three years, Xuan Sect recruited a new batch of disciples. These disciples would then be chosen by elders to join their respective branches. Ever since Master Xuan Qing Zi had accepted Feng Guang as his disciple, he had stopped taking in new students.
According to Shang Bai Zi, this year’s recruits were all exceptionally talented. Several of them had stood out even during the entrance assessment. From the way he spoke, Feng Guang could tell he was considering taking on a disciple. In Xuan Sect, a cultivator could accept students once they reached the Golden Core stage. If not for Feng Guang, who had essentially hacked her way through progress, Shang Bai Zi would have been regarded as the sect’s true prodigy. He was already at the Golden Core stage and had just barely passed the age of twenty.
At Taiji Square, thirty children, all around six or seven years old, stood neatly in a row. Each one appeared well-behaved and adorably delicate, like porcelain dolls. Feng Guang had long suspected that Xuan Sect secretly recruited based on looks. Even the kitchen aunties exuded an air of elegance.
With a flirtatious smile, Shang Bai Zi addressed the children. “See? I brought your senior sister just like you wanted.”
“Senior Sister!” The children spoke in unison and bowed respectfully.
“There’s no need for formalities.” Feng Guang smiled—a smile as distant yet warm as the sunlight atop a snowy mountain in March. “Now that you’ve entered Xuan Sect, you are all my junior brothers and sisters. In this sect, remember not to engage in petty rivalries or conflicts. Treat each other with kindness and humility. And above all, cultivate diligently to bring honor to our sect.”
“Yes, Senior Sister!”
Just as she was about to leave, Shang Bai Zi grabbed her sleeve. “Don’t go so soon, Junior Sister. These little ones still have many questions for you.”
Feng Guang glanced at the children. Aside from one girl—who wore a red ribbon in her braids, a golden bell tied around her waist, and carried herself with an air of arrogance—the rest all looked at her with innocent admiration.
Her heart softened. “Do you have any questions for me?”
Almost instinctively, her gaze lingered a little longer on that exquisitely beautiful little girl.
