That day, the Empress and King Qian emerged from their tent together well past sunrise.
The soldiers in the camp were no longer surprised by such occurrences.
Feng Guang stretched lazily under the sunlight, only to catch sight of Lan Tingrong’s sour expression from across the way. Awkwardly, she withdrew her arms. “Good morning, General Lan.”
“Your Majesty, it is already mid-morning.”
Faced with such an honest and straightforward reply, Feng Guang was at a loss for words. She knew all too well that her claim of personally leading the army was just for show. Over the past few days, she had done nothing but indulge in the pleasures of her King’s company. Feeling a rare twinge of guilt, she turned to Gu Yan for help.
Gu Yan, who had no intention of disappointing her, exuded a relaxed charm after a satisfying morning. His typically gentle demeanor carried a touch of irresistible laziness.
“General Lan, has there been any progress in locating the Princess?”
Lan Tingrong’s face was as cold as ever. “None.”
Gu Yan shifted his gaze to Feng Guang, silently accusing her with his eyes: Your sister is missing, yet you still have the mind to indulge in beauty every day?
I’m indulging because I know Xia Feng Ya will be fine!
Of course, she couldn’t say that aloud. Feng Guang quietly shuffled behind Gu Yan, deciding that with a man by her side, she might as well play the role of a delicate woman.
Gu Yan, pleased by her trust, even extended a more genuine smile toward Lan Tingrong. “General Lan, the Princess has a playful nature. Perhaps she left on her own accord.”
“That’s impossible. The Princess disappeared without leaving any information. While it wouldn’t be unusual for her to avoid others, she would never leave without informing Mu Liang.”
Though he didn’t want to admit it, Lan Tingrong couldn’t deny that Mu Liang held a special place in Xia Feng Ya’s heart.
“In that case, we must hasten our efforts to find the Princess,” Gu Yan said, frowning just enough to show appropriate concern.
Lan Tingrong felt a surge of frustration. He realized coming to these two for assistance was utterly futile. Gu Yan’s polite demeanor masked his complete lack of interest. Though he answered questions and seemed to listen, he never truly engaged or offered substantial input.
This kind of passive indifference was somehow more infuriating than outright dismissal—especially because his attitude was so courteous that expressing dissatisfaction would only make oneself seem unreasonable.
With a stiff expression, Lan Tingrong saluted. “I will continue the search with my men. Please excuse me, Your Majesty, King Qian.”
Once Lan Tingrong left, Feng Guang emerged from behind Gu Yan, marveling at how her elevated status rendered even a frustrated general powerless against her. Still, she rubbed her chin thoughtfully. “Why do I feel like Lan Tingrong has too much free time? Shouldn’t he be leading the troops in battle?”
“Your Majesty also seems to have plenty of free time.”
Feng Guang glared at him. “And whose fault is that?”
Being dragged into bed by him every day, her reputation as an indulgent ruler was only growing worse!
Gu Yan’s gaze softened, a quiet tenderness in his eyes. “Would Your Majesty like to eat something?”
Having only just risen at mid-morning, she hadn’t eaten yet.
Crossing her arms, Feng Guang adopted a magnanimous tone. “Uncle Wang, I shall allow you to dine with me.”
Gu Yan chuckled. “Thank you, Your Majesty.”
During the meal, the amount of teasing she endured didn’t bear mentioning. Once they finished, Feng Guang leaned back lazily in her chair, rubbing her stomach. “I feel like I’ve been eating more and more lately. Do you think I might be pregnant?”
Gu Yan glanced at her with a calm expression. “Your Majesty is likely mistaken.”
“Then why has my appetite increased so much recently?”
“You’ve gained weight. Naturally, you’re eating more.”
