After Feng Guang finished vomiting, she was completely exhausted, barely able to stand by holding onto a tree. Her face was pale.
Nangong Li said, “Now that you’re done, let’s go to the Tang Clan’s secret chamber.”
The Tang Clan’s secret chamber???
She looked at the closed stone door embedded in the wall, then around her; it was pitch dark, and there was no one else in sight. She muttered to herself—so much for increased security.
Seeing her hesitate, Nangong Li asked, “Feng Guang, are you going to walk on your own, or should I break your legs and drag you there?”
Feng Guang shrank back, asking, “The Tang Clan’s chamber is filled with traps, and you’re injured. Do you want to go in?”
“Traps? Isn’t that why you’re here to handle them?”
Finally understanding his intent, Feng Guang shivered. “Master, can I still apologize for my past mistakes?”
Nangong Li smiled with a feigned warmth. “Too late for that.”
Her eyes darted around nervously.
“I’d advise you not to try escaping. This place is filled with hidden traps, and without a map, you’re just a few steps away from death.” He was pleased to see her face turn even paler with fear. He took out a key, inserted it into a slot in the stone door, and turned it gently. The door opened, releasing a cloud of dust.
In a gentlemanly manner, Nangong Li gestured, “Miss Xia, please enter.”
With stiff steps, Feng Guang walked cautiously, taking three steps to cover one. To her surprise, Nangong Li waited for her with unusual patience. Just as she reached the entrance, Nangong Li suddenly stepped to the side, dodging a burst of energy that struck the tree behind him, felling it with a loud crash.
Before she could understand what had happened, a figure appeared behind her, pulling her into the chamber. As Nangong Li tried to enter, the stone door slammed shut with a resounding “boom.”
The man tossed a small torch, lighting up the wall-mounted oil lamps one by one until the dark chamber glowed like daylight.
In the bright light, she could see the man clearly—a figure dressed in white, wearing a traditional opera mask. He raised his hand to twist one of the wall-mounted lamps, and she heard the sound of a lock clicking. He turned to her and asked, “Are you alright?”
“Xue Ran, why are you wearing a mask?”
He paused, then removed it, revealing that familiar, gentle face. Puzzled, he asked, “Miss Xia, how did you recognize me?”
“It’d be hard not to recognize you…”
Xue Ran looked momentarily embarrassed. “I thought no one would be able to tell.”
Feeling a bit sorry for him, Feng Guang said, “Actually, it wasn’t that easy to recognize… mainly, it’s because I’ve spent time with you, so… so I just guessed.”
“No need to comfort me, Miss Xia. I’ll just devote myself to mastering the art of disguise even more.”
She didn’t quite know how to respond to that and glanced at the stone door. “Nangong Li has a key. What if he opens the door and comes in?”
“Don’t worry; I’ve already locked it from the inside.”
Locked… from the inside?
She looked back at the massive stone door, astonished. Who knew a door like this could be locked from within?
She turned to Xue Ran. “So what do we do now?”
“According to Jianghu records, the Tang Clan’s chamber has a second exit. We’ll search for it.”
She held onto his hand. “But the chamber is full of traps!”
“Don’t be afraid.” Xue Ran gently clasped her hand, his smile pure and gentle. “I’m here.”
If Feng Guang had to pick two moments when a man is most irresistible, she would say it’s either when he says “Buy whatever you want” or when he smiles and says “I’m here.”
Hearing something so full of boyfriend energy… it’s enough to make a girl’s heart skip a beat!
