“Miss Xia, Qingyu is indeed a boy,” Xue Ran said, not quite understanding her question.
Naturally, Qingyu, sitting nearby, overheard and looked up. “Master, ignore her. She’s clearly up to no good with you.”
“Ahem…” Xue Ran coughed lightly, pressing a fist to his lips. “Qingyu, don’t talk nonsense. Miss Xia, Qingyu is still young. Please don’t take offense.”
“But he’s right!” Feng Guang said cheerfully, “I am up to no good with you.”
Xue Ran: “…”
Leaving Xue Ran at a loss for words, Feng Guang walked over to sit beside Qingyu, patting him on the shoulder. “Little Qingyu, since you work so hard to brew my medicine, I’ll forgive you for spilling my secret.”
“Shameless,” Qingyu scoffed, swatting her hand away with a look of pure disdain.
“Sometimes shamelessness is a talent, you know! Just think, if everyone in this world was too proud and uptight, there’d be so many more lonely people out there.”
Qingyu hadn’t heard the term “lonely dog” before, but he was sharp enough to catch her meaning. He had never met a woman as bold and shameless as Feng Guang, though, admittedly, he hadn’t met many women at all.
“I’ll never let you be my master’s wife!” he declared as if taking an oath. Tossing aside his fan, he grabbed a cloth, lifted the medicine pot, poured its contents into a bowl, and shoved it into Feng Guang’s hands. “Here’s your medicine!”
Holding the bowl, Feng Guang watched as Qingyu stomped off to pack up, shaking her head. “Honestly, I think Qingyu’s getting cuter and cuter… Ow! Hot!”
Realizing the bowl she was holding had just come off the fire, she instinctively began to let go, but Xue Ran quickly reached out and took it from her hands.
“My hand!” she whined, blowing on her reddened fingers. She’d always been sensitive to pain, and her delicate skin made her even more vulnerable.
Seeing how much she was hurting, Xue Ran took the jade pendant from his waist and offered it to her. “This is cold jade; it’s naturally cool. Hold onto it, and it should help.”
She immediately clutched the pendant in her hand, the coolness bringing her relief. “Thank goodness for your precious treasure.”
“Don’t call my master a ‘precious treasure!’” Qingyu shouted indignantly as he returned, overhearing her comment.
Xue Ran’s face heated up. “Qingyu, that’s not what Miss Xia meant…”
Feng Guang smirked mischievously. “But you know, there’s nothing wrong with taking it that way, Qingyu.”
Xue Ran raised his hand to his forehead, feeling more flustered by the moment.
Putting on a helpless expression, Feng Guang said, “Dr. Xue, I’m scared of the heat. How about you feed me the medicine?”
Xue Ran used his internal energy to cool down the bowl and handed it to her. “Miss Xia, it’s not hot anymore.”
She reached out, barely touching the bowl, then looked up and lied outright, “Still too hot.”
“…Then I’ll cool it further.”
“But won’t that affect its potency if it gets too cold?”
“This…”
Seeing her master faltering, Qingyu quickly held up a bag of osmanthus cakes and said, “I don’t know about the medicine’s potency, but I do know that if you don’t drink it right now, I’m throwing these osmanthus cakes on the ground.”
Feng Guang clenched her teeth, “Fine, you win!”
Taking a deep breath, she snatched the bowl from Xue Ran’s hands, shut her eyes, and downed the medicine in one go, then extended her hand toward Qingyu.
With a huff, Qingyu tossed the osmanthus cakes over to her.
