No one seemed able to react to the sudden turn of events.
Yao Xiaoxiao stood behind Nangong Zhe, and even she froze the moment she saw him fire the gun. The shot had come without the slightest warning. Even standing right beside him, she had no chance to stop him—and judging from the way Nangong Zhe had pulled the trigger, if she had dared to interfere, the gun probably would have been pointed at her head next.
“Qi Wei…” Fengguang never once looked at Nangong Zhe. All of her attention was fixed entirely on Qi Wei alone. The blood spreading across his chest made her feel dizzy, and no matter how desperately she tried to cover the wound, it was useless.
Qi Wei’s face grew paler and paler, yet he smiled as though nothing had happened. “Don’t cry… I can’t feel pain, so it doesn’t hurt…”
“What does it matter whether you can feel pain or not?” she cried out, only then realizing that tears had already begun streaming down her face. Her hands were stained red with blood, the warm liquid seeming to burn her skin. At last, her voice broke into pleading. “Qi Wei… you’re so smart, and you’re so capable… you’ll be okay, right?”
“What should I do… I don’t want to disappoint Fengguang, but right now, I can’t promise anything…” He gave a faint laugh, already beginning to lose strength. He might not feel pain, but losing this much blood would still kill him soon enough.
At last, Nangong Zhe walked over, his tone casual and mocking. “Looks like my aim’s still pretty good.”
It was obvious he was rather proud of himself.
“Nangong Zhe said, “Qi Wei, you locked me up for so long. You even made me live in this world as your substitute. You deserved that shot.”
Qi Wei spoke softly. “Your hypnosis has been undone…”
“Thanks to those doctors. Some of their hypnosis methods are no worse than yours.” Nangong Zhe sneered. “Qi Wei, you’re so clever. You treated everyone around you like toys. Did you ever think the day would come when this happened to you?”
“Enough!” Fengguang suddenly shouted.
Nangong Zhe seemed momentarily surprised. Looking at her, he let out an amused “Oh?”
“Xia Fengguang… don’t tell me you’ve actually fallen for this man?”
Nangong Zhe was a doctor—a doctor with ideals. He had always possessed professional ethics, completely unlike the other doctors in that hospital. He truly could be considered a good man. But that didn’t mean he wouldn’t resent the person who had manipulated him like a puppet.
At the very least, he was grateful he had found a gun in Qi Wei’s room. It saved him from having to fight Qi Wei like some primitive brute.
Qi Wei no longer looked at Nangong Zhe. Struggling to lift his hand, he gently wiped away Fengguang’s tears just as he always had before, his voice tender.
“Don’t cry anymore… I’ve wanted to tell you this for a long time. Fengguang, when you cry… you’re not as beautiful as when you smile.”
“If you don’t die… then I won’t cry anymore. From now on, I’ll smile for you every day, okay?”
“Fengguang… I’m very happy…” He forced the corners of his lips upward into a weak smile. “I’m happy… that you invited me into the outside world… It’s just a pity I won’t be able to go…”
Someone had once been willing to accept him with all their heart.
And in this moment, for the first time in his life, he felt fulfilled.
So perhaps… even if he closed his eyes and drifted away like this, he might finally have a beautiful dream.
“No…” Fengguang grabbed the hand that had fallen limp at his side. “Qi Wei… don’t go to sleep. Open your eyes…”
No matter how desperately she begged, he gave no response.
