“I said no shooting means no shooting.” Fengguang pulled her hand back and coldly said to Zheng Gao, “You can try firing if you want, but I guarantee that once you get back, the Xia family won’t let you off.”
Zheng Gao’s expression darkened. He knew very well what the name “Xia family” represented. Lowering the gun, he stepped back with a grim look on his face.
“Qi Wei…” Fengguang looked at the man in the distance who was smiling at her. In a daze, she murmured, “You still came.”
Qi Wei smiled, his clear eyes impossibly pure. “Were you waiting for me to come?”
Yes. She had been waiting for him.
“Qi Wei, I suddenly realized… there’s something I’ve never asked you before…”
Qi Wei slowly walked closer to her. “What is it?”
“I… I want to ask you this: if I asked you to go with me to the outside world, would you be willing?”
His steps halted. “What do you mean by that, Fengguang?”
“I hate the feeling of being trapped, but Qi Wei… I can’t deny that I really do like you. If I had to choose between freedom and you, I would choose freedom. But…” She took a deep breath and slowly continued, “Standing here now, I suddenly realized that freedom and you don’t have to be mutually exclusive. You want to trap me in your world, but I can also try to bring you into mine.”
At the root of everything that had happened between them was simply the fact that they saw the world differently. She would never give up her freedom for him, and he would never let go of his obsession with keeping her by his side for her sake. But that didn’t mean the two of them couldn’t be together—so long as one of them was willing to compromise.
Yes, she still remembered exactly what kind of psychiatric patient Qi Wei was. He had killed people. In the eyes of others, he was a devil. He had done many things to her that she could hardly endure.
But she also remembered how lonely and isolated he was. Imprisoned here since childhood, he was like a child grasping desperately for the things he wanted. No one had ever taught him how to get along with someone he cared about.
But he was trying to learn.
During these recent days together, she could keenly sense that he had been using every book he could find to teach himself things he had never understood before. He simply lacked someone to guide him. If no one stayed by his side… then he would never learn how to express those precious emotions.
She had often wondered whether Qi Wei truly liked her. Was his fixation on her merely a desire, or was it an emotional attraction? She had agonized over that question endlessly, as though trapped in a dead end. But now, she suddenly understood.
He didn’t understand what love was.
And neither did she.
But she understood it a little better than he did.
And so, she found herself wanting to try to accept everything about him.
The way he treated her was different from how he treated everyone else. At the very least, she could comfort herself with the thought that perhaps… in his heart, she really was special. And maybe that feeling was no different from love after all.
Fengguang reached out her hand.
“Qi Wei, are you willing to go with me into the outside world?”
Even if he met countless new people there… even if one day he abandoned her and fell for someone else… she was willing to gamble on it.
“It’s been a very long time since I’ve seen the outside world…” Qi Wei smiled softly, moonlight reflecting gently in his eyes. “If Fengguang can stay by my side… then I’m willing.”
Even if the outside world was more like hell than this place, he would still go.
Suddenly, a gunshot rang out.
A flash of red entered Fengguang’s vision as blood bloomed across Qi Wei’s chest. As though he felt nothing at all, he reached out and took hold of her hand. He even smiled faintly.
“Fengguang… take me away with you.”
At last, his body gave out, and he collapsed forward.
Almost instinctively, Fengguang caught him in her arms. He was far taller than she was, and she could only slowly sink to her knees to keep him from falling onto the cold sand.
It felt as though a long time had passed before her senses gradually returned. With trembling, icy fingers, she touched his face, her voice shaking just as badly.
“Qi Wei… you can’t die…”
Not far away stood Nangong Zhe, gun still in hand.
