Fengguang glanced at Xian Hui and said irritably, “Is it so strange that we’re married?”
“No…” Xian Hui simply found it surprising that someone who looked so young was already married.
Liu Nianfeng casually patted Fengguang on the head and smiled. “The banquet is in the front hall. Your Majesty of Nanxiang—how did you end up in the rear courtyard?”
“You’re the Emperor of Nanxiang?” Fengguang exclaimed in surprise.
“That’s correct.” Xian Hui wondered inwardly how this man knew his identity, but kept his tone even. “I got lost and wandered here. But how did you recognize me, Young Master Liu?”
“There is no one in the Nanxiang royal family I do not know,” Liu Nianfeng replied.
That only made him seem even more mysterious.
Xian Hui couldn’t quite tell who this man was—friend or foe? And why had he investigated the Nanxiang royal family?
Fengguang, however, quietly asked, “Is he a descendant of Xian Long?”
“That’s right.” Liu Nianfeng asked meaningfully, “Do you think he looks very much like Xian Long?”
She studied Xian Hui carefully again, then shook her head. “No.”
“That’s good.”
“What do you mean ‘good’?”
He only smiled without answering.
He still remembered that hundreds of years ago, she had often said Xian Long was handsome.
When he didn’t want to explain something, there was no way she could get an answer out of him. Fengguang looked up at the sky. “My father’s birthday banquet is about to start.”
“You go ahead. I’ll be there shortly.”
Fengguang glanced between Liu Nianfeng and Xian Hui but didn’t ask any questions. “Then hurry up.”
He nodded. “Alright.”
Only then did she step out of his arms and leave.
Xian Hui smiled calmly. “Young Master Liu, is there something you wish to discuss with me?”
“What do you think of Fengguang?”
Xian Hui paused, completely unprepared for the question. Assuming the man suspected him of harboring feelings for his wife, he quickly explained, “Madam Liu is wonderful, but please don’t misunderstand. I only admire her—there are no other intentions.”
“Only admiration?” Liu Nianfeng smiled faintly. “I would have thought you found her eyes… particularly beautiful.”
For a brief moment, Xian Hui’s smile stiffened, but it quickly returned to normal. “Madam Liu is indeed beautiful. Naturally, her eyes are as well.”
“So, Your Majesty Xian Hui—do you think my wife’s eyes are… worth collecting?”
A gust of night wind swept past, and Xian Hui coughed lightly. “What do you mean by that, sir?”
“There are many collectors in this world. Some collect antiques, others collect books. But Your Majesty… you are not like ordinary people.”
Xian Hui stopped coughing. Narrowing his eyes, he studied the man seriously. “Who exactly are you?”
“You only need to understand this—there are no secrets in the Nanxiang royal family that I do not know. And I have no interest in meddling unnecessarily.” Liu Nianfeng smiled. “As I recall, you’ve always admired Leng Qingjue. And today, she happens to be here. Why not turn your attention back to her?”
He added softly, “You should understand—if you continue to cast unnecessary attention on my wife, I may not be able to resist gouging out those eyes of yours.”
Xian Hui said nothing, silently weighing whether this man truly had the ability to back up his words.
Liu Nianfeng smiled calmly and tossed him a small bottle of medicine. “Leng Qingjue is immune to all poisons—you’ve long lacked an opportunity. But what I’ve given you will render her unconscious for a time.”
Xian Hui’s hand trembled slightly as he gripped the bottle—an unmistakable sign of suppressed excitement. “Why help me?”
“I’m merely resolving a small problem for my wife’s family,” Liu Nianfeng said with a faint smile. Then, lowering his voice, he added, “Your Majesty, remember this—do not set your sights on those you shouldn’t. Only then will you live a long life.”
Xian Hui was struck by the overwhelming pressure in those words and remained silent for quite some time.
Leaving behind a faint, almost imperceptible smile, Liu Nianfeng turned and walked away.
He believed Xian Hui understood his meaning—and would handle Leng Qingjue’s matter well.
As for himself, all he needed to do was hold Fengguang and casually remark on how treacherous the human heart could be.
