“Lant, kiss me.” Freya stared deeply into his silver-gray pupils. No matter how the outside world changed, his eyes remained pure, deep, and mesmerizing.
“Yes, my Princess.”
Their warm lips met, like desert travelers finding an oasis, drinking in the sweetness with all their being.
Inside the small carriage, the temperature suddenly rose, growing increasingly heated.
“Mm… Lant…” The sweet, sticky sound that escaped from Freya’s throat startled even herself.
Lant snapped back to his senses and quickly pulled away.
Freya straightened her somewhat disheveled clothes with red cheeks. She sat up from where she had been half-pinned against the carriage wall.
“You… you definitely haven’t rested well these past few days. Do you want to sleep a little, leaning on me?” Freya patted her thigh and invited Lant to lie down and rest.
“I’m not tired.” Lant shook his head. It was his duty to protect Freya. How could he sleep?
“Hmph…” Freya frowned and puffed her cheeks in slight anger. “Lant! I command you now! Immediately! Right now! Lie down and sleep!”
“Princess…” Lant looked both helpless and amused.
Freya would not listen. She insisted.
“I’ll lie down for a little while then.” Lant decided to listen to her and lay down obediently.
She still carried that pleasant smell of flowers, which gradually soothed the restlessness and unease left behind by the past days of relentless killing.
Although the carriage was not large, it had all the necessities. Freya looked at Lant, listening as his breathing slowly steadied. Then she took a towel and a hot water flask from her luggage and gently wiped the dried blood from his face.
Even someone as formidable as he, after more than ten consecutive days of intense fighting and heightened nerves, had developed faint dark circles under his eyes.
Freya’s eyes welled with involuntary tenderness. She carefully reached into his pockets.
Thank goodness. All the protective charms were still there with no signs of use.
She marveled at his increasingly unfathomable strength while also feeling grateful that the charms being not used meant he did not suffer any serious injuries.
When Lant woke up, he had only rested for a short while.
They were still within Serorida’s borders but had already reached the first rest stop along the way.
The post station was not far from the Solnak Plains. Over the past two years, the plains had been Freya’s most frequent destination, and her greatest joy was riding horses with Lant across that vast grassland.
From the upper floor of the station, one could vaguely make out the prairie in the distance, though it was now covered in snow.
Freya had brought very few attendants. Aside from everyone in the side palace who insisted on following her, the rest were knights sent by King Serorida to escort her.
Of course, the knights would only escort her as far as the border of Serorida. The rest of the journey would be up to Freya alone.
As for whether Alterg would send someone to pick her up, it all depends on Alterg’s attitude.
After more than ten dusty days on the road, Lant felt as though he was about to ferment. He was grateful that Freya did not mind his condition, so upon arriving at the station, he quickly cleaned himself up.
The moment he opened the door, he was startled to find Freya standing there holding a pillow.
“Princess?” Lant asked, confused.
Before he could react, Freya pushed him back against the wall with surprising force.
“Lant! Don’t you move! I need to thoroughly check you over!” With that, Freya boldly began tugging at his clothes.
Lant simply stood there, looking resigned to whatever she wanted to do.
He was so tall that Freya had to stand on her tiptoes, huffing and puffing, as she pulled his shirt down. “Turn around. Let me see!”
Aside from a few minor cuts and bruises, there were no serious injuries.
Even so, Freya’s heart ached for him. She used healing magic to heal every small wound.
“Your magic seems to have improved again,” Lant observed, feeling the gentle power entering his body. The magical energy felt purer than before. It seemed Freya was not far from truly awakening.
“Is that so? That’s wonderful!” Freya didn’t feel any change herself, but she was happy that Lant said so. Since his magic was so powerful, his judgment must be correct!
After healing his wounds, Freya hugged her pillow and plopped down on Lant’s bed, refusing to leave.
Lant looked at her blinking her big, watery eyes, her smooth golden hair draped over her shoulders, wearing an innocent expression. He could not bear to chase her away. He stammered, “Princess… this… this isn’t proper…”
Freya pouted. “You’ve already kissed me. What’s with the propriety?”
“Uh…” Lant couldn’t refute.
“I’m scared. Sleep with me. You said you would protect me.” Freya set her pillow aside and lay down without the slightest hesitation. She patted the large empty space beside her. “I won’t get in your way while you sleep. See, I’ve left you plenty of room.”
What happened to that shy, easily blushing little princess from before?
When did she become so forward?
Lant was completely taken aback.
“Okay… alright.” Lant sat on the bed without immediately lying down. “You sleep in peace. I’ll keep watch over you.”
Freya grabbed the blanket to cover her burning cheeks. “No. Will you hold me?”
“Alright.” Lant could not refuse any request she made. He reached out and pulled her close.
Leaning against his chest, listening to his heartbeat, Freya’s lips curled into a silly, happy smile. “Would you say we’re having an affair now?”
She was supposed to be going off to a political marriage, yet she got together with her personal guard knight. The thought made her heart race. Freya never imagined that one day she would do something so improper.
“Mutual affection cannot be called an affair,” Lant countered with a perfectly serious expression.
“You are right.” Freya took the initiative to raise her head and kissed his chin. Then she closed her eyes in his arms, feeling completely at ease.
Outside Lant’s door, a group of melon-eating people1onlookers watching the show or drama; gossipy people were either squatting on the floor or pressing their ears against the door, eavesdropping.
After a long while with no sound, Lita shook her head in disappointment. The others dispersed, looking as though they were hating iron for not becoming steel2恨铁不成钢, a Chinese idiom for expressing frustration when someone fails to meet high expectations.
Such a good opportunity, how disappointing!
