Freya’s carriage was waiting just outside the palace. It was clear that King Serorida held no affection for this daughter and could not wait to send her away.
“Princess!”
Freya followed sound and saw Lant. He was leading Light and running towards her.
He left in such a hurry that he didn’t even change his clothes. He was still covered in blood from head to toe.
Lita, Kemi, and the others hugged each other happily and excitedly when they saw Lant.
They had always believed Lant would return!
And he indeed came back!
Freya could no longer suppress the endless longing and worry in her heart. She ran towards Lant, not even caring whether she would trip and stumble due to her dress.
“Princess! Be careful! Slow down!” Lita was afraid that Freya would fall. She followed behind her with her hands outstretched, ready to catch her.
“Lant… you’re finally back… I’m so glad you’re safe, I’m so glad you’re safe…” Freya’s voice broke with emotion.
“Princess, this is not the place to talk. Let’s get into the carriage first,” Lita reminded her at the right moment.
Her role as a love-life security guard had not been easy.
“You’re right. Let’s go to the carriage first.” Freya snapped out of it and immediately pulled Lant by the hand towards the carriage.
“Princess, I’m dirty. I’d better not—”
“I won’t allow it! You have to listen to me!” Freya shot Lant a glare and pulled him into the carriage without giving him a chance to refuse.
Lita, who had originally been about to step in as well, quietly withdrew her foot and chose to ride with Yuna and the others instead.
Aiden took hold of Lant’s warhorse Light and patted his head. “Buddy, you’ve worked hard these past few days. Don’t worry, I’ll give you some extra food.”
Light snorted twice, seeming very pleased.
Indeed, not being able to use teleportation magic was such a hassle. These past two days had nearly run the horse to death!
…
Inside the carriage.
In the cramped space, Lant felt the stench of blood on his body growing even stronger. He instinctively wanted to sit farther away from Freya, afraid of soiling her dress.
“Don’t you move!” Freya commanded him.
Lant reflexively froze.
Freya scooted closer and sat down next to him. “Lant, you already know everything, don’t you?”
Lant nodded and admitted. If he didn’t know, he would not have rushed back so quickly.
“Lant… what are your thoughts?” Freya stared into his deep eyes.
“I’ll do whatever you say,” Lant answered very seriously.
No matter what she wanted to do, he would help her do it.
Freya was a little frustrated that he didn’t understand the meaning of her words.
Her cheeks turned red. Not minding the dried blood on his hands, she held them tightly and said with a mix of seriousness and shyness, “Lant, even though I’m about to be married, I feel that I still need to express my feelings. Otherwise, I will definitely regret it for the rest of my life. Lant, I like you. I really, really like you.”
Lant did not expect her to confess her feelings. He scolded himself for being slow. Perhaps the past few days of slaughtering monsters had dulled his mind.
“Lant, why don’t you—” Freya was about to ask why he had no reaction.
Before she could finish, storm-like kisses, tinged with the taste of blood, crashed down upon her. Lant was practically pressing down on her head as he kissed her, stealing all the breath from her chest.
Freya’s eyes widened slightly in surprise at first, then a smile appeared in her eyes. She closed her eyes, wrapped her arms around his neck, and returned his kiss.
The kiss was lingering, passionate, and hard to break.
“Princess… I like you too.” The stormy kiss subsided, and Lant gently pecked the corner of her rosy lips.
Hearing his confession with her own ears, Freya could no longer contain herself. She hugged him tightly and buried her face in his chest. “Don’t call me Princess anymore. Call me Freya.”
Even though the smell of blood on him was not pleasant, it somehow made her feel very safe.
“Freya… I’m dirty…” Lant tried to wipe the bloodstains off Freya’s dress with his hand. Such a beautiful dress, and he had soiled it.
“It’s not dirty! Not at all!” Freya hugged him even tighter. “Lant, the truth is, I really don’t want to get married… But… but if I run away… what will happen to the people…”
The thought tormented her endlessly. Could the greater good of the kingdom and her own small love truly never coexist?
Lant’s arm around her waist tightened abruptly. “I should have taken you away sooner…”
“It’s my fault,” Freya said, nuzzling against his neck. “I didn’t have the courage to tell you sooner. But now it seems… a little too late.”
Freya laughed bitterly. She even began to think about some rebellious thoughts. “Lant… I…”
She hesitated.
Lant stroked her cheek. “Princess, just say it. No matter what you want to do, I will make it happen for you.”
Freya lowered her head, almost ashamed. “I… after I’m married off, find a chance to take me away. It would be best to let me fake my death because I want to… I want to run away with you.”
Her mind was too dull to come up with a better way. If she ‘died’ in Alterg in full view of everyone, then it could not possibly be Serorida’s responsibility. Alterg would have no reason to attack Serorida either.
And given her father’s temperament, the death of an insignificant princess meant nothing to him. He would not even care, let alone use it as a pretext to send troops. Just thinking about it was impossible.
As Freya spoke these words, she herself found them unbelievable. She actually dared to think such a treasonous thought!
“Alright. I promise you. I will take you away,” Lant said solemnly, gripping her hand firmly.
“I’m sorry for putting you through this.” Freya clung to Lant and showered his cheek with messy, apologetic kisses.
As a princess, she failed to protect him from being sent on such a dangerous mission. As his lover, she was making him watch her marry a stranger. She was failing on all counts!
“I’m not the one being wronged. You are.” Lant took her hand and kissed it. “Princess, I swear upon my life to dedicate everything to you.”
Ah… It was the same vow he once made at the formal ceremony. Back then, she was only focused on going through the process and treated this vow as ordinary ceremonial words. Now, she realized he had been living by that vow all along…
