Dr. Zhang seemed to have thought of something. “Didn’t you think that person’s figure looked familiar?”
“Familiar?”
The three people frowned, pondering who it could be.
Yan Jin immediately realized, and as he did, the others followed suit.
The four of them stood up simultaneously and headed toward the second floor. The first room they reached was the one where Ah Hua was being held. The door, which had been locked previously, was now open, and the room was empty.
Bei Yutang and Dr. Zhang rushed to the next room; the lock had been removed sometime earlier.
Dr. Zhang pushed open the door and entered. Butler Sen, who had been tied to a chair, was nowhere to be seen.
“They escaped.”
The four of them looked grim.
“Who was the last to see them?” Bei Yutang asked.
Dr. Zhang replied, “It was me. Feng Qing and I brought food to Ah Hua and Butler Sen.”
“Did you notice anything unusual at that time?” Bei Yutang asked immediately.
Feng Qing and Dr. Zhang exchanged a glance, then shook their heads in unison.
“Everything was normal, nothing strange.”
Yan Jin said in a deep voice, “It must have been their accomplices who let them go.”
After Feng Qing and Dr. Zhang delivered the food, the four of them stayed together and didn’t leave alone.
This eliminated their suspicion.
Only Li Mengmeng was left, staying alone in the room.
But if it were her, how could she have been captured by Butler Sen and his group again?
It didn’t make sense.
“None of the four of us left the hall, so who let them go?”
Dr. Zhang shook his head: “No, there’s someone who hasn’t been here.”
Yan Jin looked at him with surprise: “You don’t suspect Li Mengmeng, do you? It was Li Mengmeng who was just kidnapped. If she were their accomplice, how could they have kidnapped her?”
“Perhaps it’s a cover. First, she released Butler Sen and the others, then she put on a show to clear herself of suspicion. That’s not impossible.” Feng Qing guessed.
Dr. Zhang nodded in agreement.
While they were discussing, Bei Yutang went to the next room. This was the room where Ah Hua was being held. The room was tidy, with no signs of forced entry.
Bei Yutang picked up the rope on the floor. The rope was intact, indicating it had been untied.
Wait…
Bei Yutang noticed a thin layer of dust under the chair out of the corner of her eye. She picked it up and examined it closely; it was grass clippings left from the friction of the rope. She glanced down at the intact rope in her hand and understood.
The furnishings in the room were intact; nothing was missing, and there were no sharp objects.
Ah Hua was able to break free because the murderer must have given her something to slowly wear down the rope, thus freeing herself and Butler Sen. When they discovered that Ah Hua and Butler Sen had disappeared, the murderer replaced the broken rope, creating the illusion that someone had rescued them.
The murderer’s purpose in doing this was singular: to create an alibi.
Ah Hua and Butler Sen disappeared sometime between dinner and 3 AM, and two other people had left during that time: Li Mengmeng and Yan Jin, who went upstairs to call for her.
There were two people with completely solid alibis: Dr. Zhang and Feng Qing.
