Chapter 43: Disaster Strikes
Hearing this, Lin Jin asked instinctively,
“Why?”
“Because of selfishness. Because of jealousy. Because if you strangle geniuses in their cradles, then in the future they won’t compete with everyone else for the already limited resources.”
Zhe Yu’s lips curved faintly as he spoke. He raised a finger and condensed a wisp of spiritual power, which gathered into a small glowing mass before Lin Jin’s eyes, then slowly took the shape of a tiny human figure.
With a snap of Zhe Yu’s fingers, the miniature figure’s meridians became clearly visible. A thread of spiritual energy was guided into its body, circulating endlessly along those pathways.
“Cultivation, at its core, is simply finding a way to turn the spiritual energy of heaven and earth into something you can use. We draw energy into the body, let it circulate through the meridians, and use cultivation methods to run it through the major and minor cycles. Only then can spiritual energy be refined into spiritual power and stored in the dantian.
“As for the Huaiyu Sacred Body being called a ‘sacred body,’ it’s natural because it possesses something wondrous that ordinary people do not.
“Kid, tell me first—what do you understand about your own constitution? How did those useless masters of yours at Piaomiao Pavilion teach you, from childhood until now?”
“Uh…” Lin Jin felt a little guilty.
He wasn’t the true owner of this body and had no memories from before transmigrating. All he could do was piece things together from the sparse descriptions in the novel and half-guess, half-make things up.
“They said I couldn’t cultivate, so they kept feeding me spiritual pills and immortal herbs to raise my cultivation level. Later, I found out they were just using me as a furnace, planning to send me to Mingzhu Heaven. After coming to Yanyu Mountain, my master gave me an introductory cultivation manual, but no matter how many times I tried, I couldn’t draw energy into my body. As for body tempering… forget it. My body’s terrible. I get winded just running a couple of steps.”
Zhe Yu nodded, then asked,
“Then have you noticed that you’re far more sensitive to the flow of spiritual energy in this world than ordinary people?”
Lin Jin froze for a moment.
“That’s true.”
“That is the unique trait of the Huaiyu Sacred Body. The reason it’s called a natural furnace is that it’s the constitution most attuned to spiritual energy. Ordinary cultivators need to cultivate because they must force spiritual energy to become theirs. You don’t—because in a certain sense, you are a part of the world’s spiritual energy.
“Have you never questioned why you were able to reach your current cultivation level using only pills and herbs? For others, even after consuming spiritual medicine, they need a long time to refine and absorb it, and much of its essence is lost in the process. You don’t suffer that loss. You accept the medicinal effects in full.
“The same goes for meridians. For cultivators, they’re merely pathways for refining spiritual energy—but you don’t need that path. You’re too close to spiritual energy; you are part of it. Naturally, you can mobilize it at will. Some cultivators who reach the very pinnacle may be able to refine spiritual energy externally without relying on meridians, but they still cannot escape the concept of ‘refining.’ You can. This is an innate talent you were born with—something others could never achieve even after a lifetime of cultivation.”
Hearing this, Lin Jin was so shaken that his heart couldn’t calm down for a long time.
So that was how it was?
No wonder Zhe Yu said the Huaiyu Sacred Body was a deception deliberately created by schemers. Others struggled their entire lives just to gain a little more spiritual energy, to raise their cultivation by a fraction—yet the Huaiyu Sacred Body needed to do nothing at all. As long as he wished it, all the spiritual energy in the world could be his to use.
What kind of cheat ability had just dropped out of the sky and smashed him on the head like this?!
“You can try it,” Zhe Yu said. “Cast a simple cleansing spell. You don’t need to draw spiritual power from within your body as you’ve learned before. Try sensing your surroundings instead. Convey your intent outward, then let your will resonate with the spiritual energy.”
Lin Jin came back to himself, closed his eyes, and carefully followed Zhe Yu’s instructions, sensing everything around him.
As his mind unified with his intent, even with his eyes closed, the world took on a clear shape within his consciousness. He could sense the trajectories of flowing spiritual energy, feel its friendly response calling out to him.
Without realizing it, Lin Jin raised his hand. The spiritual energy seemed to sense his intent and truly drifted toward him, gathering slowly into a small cluster in his palm.
Understanding what he wanted, the spiritual energy obediently followed his command. Cooperating with the hand seals he formed, it transformed into the simplest of cleansing spells.
Zhe Yu leaned lazily to the side. Seeing Lin Jin succeed on his first try, he curved his lips slightly and offered brief praise.
“Good comprehension.”
Lin Jin looked at him, then at his own palm, completely stunned.
Zhe Yu withdrew his gaze and continued,
“Although the Huaiyu Sacred Body prevents you from tempering your body like ordinary cultivators—leaving you physically weaker than even a normal mortal—it also grants you talents and opportunities others can never obtain. What I teach you today ends here. How you use this gift in the future, and what path you walk, will depend on you alone.”
Lin Jin froze.
He still had questions he wanted to ask, but before he could open his mouth, a sound-transmission talisman suddenly floated out of his storage pouch. Hua Nanzhi’s excited shout came through it, startling him badly.
“Lin Jin! I found it! I found that stupid chicken! You can come back now!”
“……”
After delivering its message, the talisman completed its duty, burned into ash, and vanished. Lin Jin scratched his head awkwardly.
“Sorry.”
“Quite interesting. No need to apologize,” Zhe Yu said with a faint smile.
“If you have matters to attend to, go back first.”
“Oh…”
Interrupted like this, Lin Jin completely forgot what he had wanted to ask earlier.
He nodded and bade Zhe Yu farewell. But just as he was about to leave, Zhe Yu suddenly called out again,
“Kid.”
“Huh?” Lin Jin paused.
“Do you have more instructions, Sect Leader?”
“You’re carrying something precious. A small storage pouch can’t hide its brilliance—it may attract unwanted attention.”
Zhe Yu raised a hand and wrapped something in spiritual power, sending it floating toward Lin Jin.
Lin Jin instinctively reached out to take it. The next instant, a cool storage ring landed in his palm, while the spiritual power surrounding it transformed before his eyes into a black butterfly that fluttered around him once.
“Follow it,” Zhe Yu said. “It will lead you back to Nanqian Sect.”
“……”
Lin Jin stared at the extremely familiar black butterfly, then at Zhe Yu, and suddenly understood everything.
He looked over at Zhe Yu with a complicated expression, but Zhe Yu pretended nothing had happened. He yawned, waved a hand at Lin Jin in farewell, and said nothing more.
Lin Jin didn’t stand on ceremony. He thanked Zhe Yu, slipped the storage ring onto his finger, and then couldn’t help asking one last thing.
“Thank you for today’s guidance, Sect Leader. I just don’t know…”
He didn’t finish his sentence, but Zhe Yu knew what he meant.
“You’re wondering why I’ve treated you so well? I’m the sect leader—what’s wrong with offering guidance to a junior in my own sect?”
Zhe Yu reclined back into the bamboo lounge chair that looked exceedingly comfortable, his tone lazy and casual.
“No need to thank me. I just find you agreeable, that’s all.”
As soon as he finished speaking, the white mist before Lin Jin thickened abruptly, completely obscuring Zhe Yu’s figure.
Lin Jin understood—this was Zhe Yu politely seeing him off.
So he said nothing more and followed the black butterfly as it slowly led him out of the bamboo grove.
Along the way, he thoroughly examined the storage ring Zhe Yu had given him. He didn’t have the knowledge to tell what rank it was, only that it was definitely a good item—at the very least, far superior to his current storage pouch.
He didn’t dwell on it. He transferred the miscellaneous items from his pouch, along with the Ghost Condensation Pearl Xu Dongsi had left him, into the ring.
