At that, Lin Jin grew a little downcast.
He pursed his lips and sighed softly.
“Ever since I joined the sect, because of some dumb luck—or other reasons—I’ve drawn a lot of attention and praise. Everyone’s expectations of me are… too high. They keep calling me a genius, but only I know the truth. I’m not nearly as good as they think. Aside from some miscellaneous, trivial stuff, I can’t really do anything well. When the halo they’ve placed on me fades one day, the people who had such high hopes for me will probably be deeply disappointed.”
He thought of Moyuzi’s slightly disappointed sigh, and his chest felt heavy. Without realizing it, he tightened his grip on the wine cup.
“You’re very capable. There’s no need to belittle yourself,” Zhe Yu said gently.
“Seven thousand points in the entrance trial may indeed have been a surprise. But your consistent top rankings in the academy, and those perfectly executed mission cases—aren’t those all your own abilities?”
“Uh…” Lin Jin didn’t know how to explain.
Doing well in the academy was simply instinct for someone who had survived the college entrance exams as a humanities student. And those flawless mission cases were only because he enjoyed puzzles and deduction—his skills just happened to align.
But none of that truly belonged to this world’s Lin Jin. If he forgot the version of himself from another world, then as Lin Jin of this world, he was still useless.
“Completing those things relied on knowledge that has nothing to do with cultivation,” Lin Jin said quietly. “I might be a little clever, but only when it comes to theory and problem-solving. I’ll never be a qualified cultivator.”
He sounded aggrieved.
“For example, I know I have no talent for cultivation. Still, I thought that even if I couldn’t become an outstanding beast tamer, I could at least be a competent one. But I don’t know how to interact with spirit beasts at all— even the gentlest ones go berserk and bite me. Back then, my master made such a fuss fighting Elder Liuxun over me. Now that he’s realized the ‘treasure’ he fought for is actually a pile of dog crap, he must be terribly disappointed.”
After a pause, he continued,
“To be honest, before I came here, I was already planning to host a farewell dinner for my master and take my leave. I don’t have the face to stay by his side anymore. By the way… does the inner sect take people for menial work? Like sweeping floors, wiping tables, and feeding spirit beasts? I think I’d be pretty good at that.”
Zhe Yu couldn’t help laughing at his speech.
Their young lord had really been pushed to the point of feeling utterly wronged.
In the path of demons and beasts, the law was survival of the fittest. Fear of the strong was instinct, etched into the soul of the weak. Once a beast tamer formed a contract, they carried the bond and aura of their beast. Even Moyuzi, bonded to the Taotie beast, dared not approach low-tier spirit beasts—let alone Lin Jin.
The Taotie beast was, at its core, still just a demon beast. Though it bore the name Taotie, it only possessed a trace of that ancient ferocious beast’s bloodline. Xiao Lanqi, however, was a Heavenly Demon—the most exalted of them—bearing the direct inheritance of the ancient ferocious beast Taowu. In terms of bloodline alone, no one past or present could rival him.
With that contract and aura on him, Lin Jin could stand among demons and still be left unprovoked, much less by low-tier beasts that hadn’t even developed intelligence yet.
Of course, none of that could be said aloud.
Zhe Yu lowered his eyes, poured Lin Jin another cup of wine, and said,
“Whether it relates to cultivation or not doesn’t matter. Knowledge is still yours. Being able to apply it freely is your ability—there’s no need to get stuck on that.”
After a pause, he added,
“And who said you have no talent for cultivation?”
“…”
Wasn’t that obvious?
Lin Jin knew full well that because of his constitution, he was born a natural furnace—his meridians were a mess, incapable of circulating even basic cultivation techniques. His current cultivation level existed only because of pills. How could he talk about cultivating talent?
He opened his mouth to speak, but the words died in his throat.
Forget it. There was no need to tell Zhe Yu, who knew what trouble it might cause.
But Zhe Yu saw the hesitation. Smiling faintly, he stopped beating around the bush and said directly,
“You think you can’t cultivate because you have the Huaiyu Sacred Body—is that right?”
At those words, Lin Jin froze, nearly dropping his cup.
Once the initial shock passed, embarrassment followed.
“Yes. I thought I’d hidden it well. I didn’t realize you’d already seen through me, Sect Leader.”
“I’ve seen through more than that,” Zhe Yu said. “I also know you escaped from Piaomiao Pavilion.”
Seeing the slight tremor in Lin Jin’s pupils, he reassured him,
“Don’t worry. Since I chose to conceal it from the start, I’ll continue to keep your secret. I only brought it up today because I didn’t want to see you belittling yourself over a misunderstanding.”
“Then…”
An unrealistic thought suddenly surfaced in Lin Jin’s mind.
Excitement and joy welled up from deep within him.
“Does that mean… I can cultivate?”
“Of course,” Zhe Yu replied.
Cradling the white jade wine jug, he slowly rose from the lounge chair and walked to Lin Jin’s side. Like a kindly elder, he very gently rested a hand on the top of Lin Jin’s head.
“After all, the claim that the Huaiyu Sacred Body cannot cultivate was nothing more than a grand deception deliberately fed to the world.”
