Ye Xiang told Ye Mo that this was a bird, but he never instructed him on how to care for it.
So when the bird died, Ye Xiang felt no remorse. “If Xiao Mo likes it, I’ll bring him another one tomorrow.”
Like it?
Ye Xiang was just joking. Someone like Ye Mo wasn’t capable of feeling something as human as “liking” anything. That’s why Ye Xiang never noticed the bird had died, because its wings had been broken.
It was Ye Mo who broke the bird’s wings. He didn’t understand that what he was doing was cruel. He simply thought, Since the bird is already locked in a cage, it doesn’t need its wings anymore.
So, he never realized the bird had died because its wings had been broken.
Ye Mo had legs, too, but he couldn’t walk out of this white room filled with instruments. He remembered Ye Xiang once saying, Anything unnecessary is just a burden.
So, Ye Mo decided he should cut off his legs.
But when shards of glass from the window pierced his thigh, and he saw the bright red liquid flowing out, he paused.
Even though his wound quickly healed on its own, it was the first time he experienced a sensation he didn’t recognize—one that thrilled him in a strange, almost exhilarating way.
Later, he would learn that this sensation was called pain.
That was the first time Ye Mo developed a feeling he didn’t like. He never tried to cut off his legs again, because he didn’t like the way pain felt.
And over time, it seemed like he was starting to experience more and more emotions he disliked.
Ye Xiang’s touch.
The locked room.
The daily physical exams in the lab…
Ye Mo seemed to be constantly surrounded by these feelings of disgust.
One day, he looked out the window at the blue sky and white clouds and asked,
“Can I go outside?”
“No,” Ye Xiang replied flatly, without a moment’s hesitation.
That was when dissatisfaction began to grow inside Ye Mo.
Dissatisfaction with the cramped space.
With the scent of ALPHAs in the lab, used to force his submission.
And with the fact that he released the same scent, just like his creator.
One day, when he was brought to Ye Xiang’s office for another knowledge session, Ye Xiang had to step out.
Ye Mo opened his computer and typed a question:
“How can I stop my body from giving off someone else’s scent?”
The answer came quickly:
“If the one who marked you dies, the marked person will no longer carry their scent.”
Death…
Ye Mo had learned this word.
When someone dies, it means they no longer exist in the world.
Their friends and family will never see them again.
The boy silently mouthed the word over and over. A flicker of light passed through his eyes.
It disappeared in an instant.
He slowly raised his hand and pressed it against his chest.
He liked death.
It made his heart race.
Ye Mo didn’t stay in the office like he was told.
He went to a laboratory where several Zerg creatures were being kept. Ye Xiang and his team had gotten them from the military for genetic experiments.
Ye Mo had been there once before. Even back then, he could sense it—these creatures feared him, yet at the same time, they were begging him to let them go.
Ye Mo never told anyone that he could understand the Zerg language. No one had ever asked, so he saw no reason to say anything.
The lab’s password lock was easy to crack.
As soon as the door opened, the Zerg burst out.
Not one of them attacked the boy—instead, they flew toward any sign of living humans.
Soon, the only sounds left in the massive facility were the screams of people and the gush of blood hitting the walls.
