Qi Wei had a gentle temperament. He smiled and replied, “I haven’t gotten married or had children yet, so I can’t really answer that.”
The future was uncertain—he never spoke in absolutes, nor did he make firm conclusions.
Seeing that he wasn’t offended, Fengguang finally relaxed. Still, she hesitated, unsure how to continue the conversation. Qi Wei was her target, but he clearly had no thoughts about romance at all—his mind was entirely focused on his role as a doctor. And judging from his answers, persuading him to leave this place with her seemed nearly impossible.
While Fengguang was quietly worrying, Qi Wei stopped in front of a hospital room. “Miss Xia, we’re here.”
Fengguang looked at the door—chains were wrapped around the handle again and again. After a moment of silence, she said, “It looks like he really is dangerous.”
“Nangong Zhe is a very intelligent man. He’s already escaped from here three times,” Qi Wei said with a faint smile, shaking his head. “If there were a ship available, I’m sure he would’ve left Diamond Island long ago.”
“He’s… that capable?”
“Of course. He’s the most dangerous patient in our hospital,” Qi Wei said. “Miss Xia, are you ready to see him?”
His words made her feel nervous, but she nodded seriously. “I’m ready.”
Qi Wei smiled, took out a key, and unlocked the chains on the door. Then he entered the code into the electronic lock on the wall and verified his fingerprint. With a click, the door opened.
He pushed it open to reveal a dark room. Fengguang felt a cold draft brush past her, sending a chill down her spine. Being timid by nature, she instinctively moved behind Qi Wei and followed him inside.
But after only a few steps, Qi Wei suddenly stopped. Fengguang didn’t have time to react and walked straight into his back. She covered her aching nose, not daring to make a sound.
Qi Wei kindly asked, “Miss Xia, are you alright?”
“I’m fine, I’m fine…” she said with a small smile, shaking her head. Even if something was wrong, she’d be too embarrassed to admit it.
Hearing her say she was fine, Qi Wei reached up and pressed a switch on the wall. The ceiling lights flickered on, instantly replacing the darkness. Only then did she see clearly—a man lying on a stark white bed.
The sudden light seemed to bother him. He lifted a hand to cover his eyes and didn’t move again.
Qi Wei smiled. “Mr. Nangong, you have a visitor.”
The man spoke in a groggy, half-awake voice, “Just tell them I’m not here.”
“I’m afraid that won’t work. I’ve already brought her in.”
Nangong Zhe let out a weary sigh. Then he threw off the covers and sat up. His short black hair was slightly messy, giving him a kind of effortless, lazy charm. He glanced at Qi Wei first, then shifted his gaze to Fengguang. His narrow eyes lifted slightly as he propped his chin on his hand, letting out an amused, drawn-out, “Oh~”
“Who is this beauty? I feel like I’ve seen you before…”
“I’m Xia Fengguang.” She stepped out from behind Qi Wei. Facing this fiancé of hers—a murderer—she couldn’t muster any warmth.
Although they had been engaged since childhood, they had only met once back then. Over the past decade, they had had no contact at all.
