On the day of the General’s residence celebration, guests filled the estate.
Lan Zhao was set to head to the battlefield next month. Though he was known as the Ever-Victorious General, there was no guarantee that nothing would go wrong. Many people couldn’t help but admire Miss Li—after all, there was a real chance she might become a widow not long after marrying into the family. And even if Lan Zhao returned safely, she might as well be living like one, since he was famously oblivious to romance.
When it came time to lift the bridal veil, Fengguang quietly slipped into the bridal chamber to sneak a look at the bride.
She was beautiful, with a gentle and soft demeanor. Standing beside Lan Zhao, she seemed all the more delicate and demure—like a little bird nestled close. The two of them made quite a fitting pair.
Since ancient times, even heroes have struggled to resist beauty. Seeing the unmistakable joy in Lan Zhao’s eyes, Fengguang covered her mouth and giggled as she slipped back out.
Outside, Xian Mo had already been waiting for quite a while.
Smiling, he asked, “Finished looking?”
“All done,” Fengguang floated in front of him, cupping her face. “I just realized today—maybe Lan Zhao isn’t so bad after all. When he lifted the veil, the bride shyly turned her head away, and he immediately panicked and asked, ‘Did I scare you?’… Isn’t that funny?”
“It is… very funny.”
“I know, right? Super funny.” Fengguang drifted around him, her voice coming from different directions. “Who would’ve thought Mr. Deadpan could pull off that tough-guy-with-a-soft-heart act? That’s definitely a bonus!”
“I’m glad Master has managed to improve Fengguang’s opinion of him.” His tone carried a hint of a smile, but his eyes held none of that warmth.
Fengguang snapped out of her dreamy thoughts and looked at him blankly. “A-Mo, why are you unhappy again?”
“I’m not unhappy.”
“You are.”
“You’re mistaken. I’m very happy right now.”
“When you’re happy, you always agree with what I say. You wouldn’t keep arguing like this.”
Xian Mo fell into a subtle silence.
Fengguang pressed on, “So why are you mad?”
“I’m going to the battlefield next month.”
“And?”
“You can start worrying about me now.”
Fengguang: “…”
Well… she didn’t really understand why he suddenly got upset, but she knew exactly how to calm him down—just go along with what he said.
So she did.
And just like that, she spent an entire month worrying about him.
Finally, the day came for him to depart for the battlefield.
Of course, she went with him.
The battlefield was nothing like the palace. Killing here was more direct, more brutal. The moment they arrived at the desolate borderlands, the harshness of the place could be felt immediately.
This time, Lan Zhao still held the position of Great General, while Xian Mo served as his deputy. That was the only role he could take—for someone so young, with no battle achievements yet, he couldn’t command the respect of the troops otherwise.
Fengguang followed Xian Mo to a riverside in the wilderness—the only water source in the area. To prevent enemy poisoning, it had to be patrolled daily. It was the middle of the night, and she had come along to keep him company on his patrol.
But as they reached the riverbank, Fengguang suddenly asked, “A-Mo, do you hear something?”
“I do.” Xian Mo frowned slightly and looked toward the opposite bank, then walked over.
“Be careful, A-Mo—it might be someone from the enemy—” She cut herself off mid-sentence.
Because in the river… there was a girl bathing.
Fengguang’s eyes lit up at the sight of the girl’s figure. She wiped at the corner of her mouth as if she might drool. “Now that’s what I call a lucky encounter…”
Xian Mo smiled charmingly. “Is she better-looking than me?”
