Fengguang hurried along with the officer and finally met up with Baili Mo and his group at the city gate.
Baili Mo, who had been visibly worried, relaxed the moment he saw her and smiled in relief. He walked to her side, took her hand, and wrote in her palm, “Where did you go?”
“I…” Fengguang thought for a moment, then decided to lie without blinking. “After we got separated, I accidentally fell into the water. Then I ran into Baili Shu. He took me to his residence and had me change into some clean clothes. Later, your people came, so I followed them to find you.”
He wrote again, “Were you hurt when you fell into the water?”
“I’m fine. I wasn’t injured.”
The corners of his lips lifted, his smile carrying a fresh, gentle warmth. Slowly, he wrote in her palm, “As long as Fengguang is safe, that’s all that matters.”
For once, Fengguang felt a twinge of guilt. This man was genuinely worried about her. After they were separated, he had searched the entire city for her—while she, in contrast, had been sitting on a flower boat… Only now did she belatedly realize that she’d let Song Wuxia take quite a few liberties with her.
Suddenly, she felt her hand tighten in someone else’s grasp. She looked up and saw Baili Mo smiling at her.
She understood at once: her absent-mindedness had made him unhappy. Even though he was still smiling, she just knew that he was upset. Fengguang wilted a little and said cautiously, “Um… should we go back to the palace first?”
Baili Mo nodded.
After returning to the Eastern Palace, Fengguang remained on edge. She didn’t know how much of her story Baili Mo believed, or whether he might go ask Baili Shu to confirm if what she said was true. Yet Baili Mo seemed to have no intention of pursuing the matter. He continued to treat her with the same gentle warmth—caring for her, smiling at her, attending to her every need.
A sudden sense of guilt rose in Fengguang’s heart. She even gave it a name: “the guilt of a wife’s betrayal.”
It was probably that feeling of a delicate young wife putting a green hat on her gentle, considerate husband.
But heaven knew—she didn’t even like Baili Mo!
If not for the binding title of “husband and wife,” she would have treated him as though he didn’t exist at all! Or maybe… maybe if his attitude toward her were just a little worse, she wouldn’t feel like such a sinner right now!
Feiyu watched her young lady sitting in the pavilion, supposedly admiring the flowers but gnawing on a handkerchief instead, completely baffled. “Miss… what’s wrong with you?”
This didn’t look like her monthly cycle, either.
Fengguang bit down on the handkerchief and whimpered, “You wouldn’t understand even if I told you.”
“But if you don’t tell me, then I’ll never understand,” Feiyu replied.
“Oh? Now you’re talking back to me?” Fengguang raised an eyebrow.
Quick-witted Feiyu immediately lowered her head. “Feiyu wouldn’t dare!”
Fengguang hadn’t really meant to scold her. Knowing Feiyu’s formidable talent for gossip, she asked, “In the past few days, has the Crown Prince had any contact with Yiren?”
“Contact?” Feiyu thought for a moment before answering. “Just the same as usual. Yiren checks the Crown Prince’s pulse regularly, and other than that, there’s been no contact. Hmph, that girl finally knows her place.”
The same as usual… Fengguang stroked her chin. Could it be that she’d misunderstood things? Maybe there really was nothing between Baili Mo and Yiren. Or perhaps… the two of them were just hiding it very well?
