A dog barking.

“Woof! Woof!”
Huyao barked several times excitedly, wagging his tail as he charged over.

Fengguang jumped to her feet, then immediately stepped onto a stool and climbed up onto the stone table. Her movements were swift and seamless—if there’d been an audience, they probably would have applauded.

She was not okay right now.

“Where are the eunuchs and maids of the Eastern Palace?!” Fengguang shouted as she hopped anxiously on the stone table. “Who let this dog in again?!”

“Miss!” Feiyu stood safely below, since Huyao hadn’t spared her so much as a glance.

Fengguang had no time to worry about Feiyu. She pointed at Huyao and warned, “Don’t come any closer!”

Huyao stuck out his tongue. With his massive body, it was effortless for him to plant his front half onto the stone table. He looked at Fengguang as if she were a friend he wanted to play with.

Fengguang took a step back. “If you come any closer… any closer… I’ll call for help!”

“Woof!” Huyao barked again, sounding very much like he was saying, Go ahead, call them.

In that instant, Fengguang felt thoroughly looked down upon by a dog. Standing atop the stone table, she angrily yelled at Feiyu, “Why are you still standing there? Go find someone to save me!”

“Yes, Miss!” Feiyu answered in a panic and immediately ran off to call for help.

Huyao, meanwhile, had no intention of leaving. He let out a few low whines and looked ready to climb fully onto the table after Fengguang.

Every nerve in Fengguang’s body snapped taut. Trembling, she retreated further. “Don’t come any closer…”

Without realizing it, she stepped to the edge of the table. Her balance faltered, and she started to fall backward—only to be caught by a pair of hands that reached out in time, preventing her from tumbling down.

“Crown Princess, are you all right?”

Hearing the aged voice, Fengguang turned around and saw the old man she had met in the Cold Palace that day. She remembered his name—Yisu. “It’s you…”

The old man advised gently, “Standing on a stone table is dangerous. Your Highness should come down first.”

“I want to come down too, but that dog is still waiting for me…” she said pitifully, glancing again at Huyao, who was drooling at her from the other side.

The old man chuckled softly. “Crown Princess, sometimes you must learn how to let go.”

As he spoke, he picked up a pastry from the plate on the table and tossed it in one direction. Huyao let out an “Awooo!” and immediately ran after it.

Yisu then said to the still-dazed Fengguang, “It’s safe now, Your Highness. You can come down.”

“Okay…” She took his hand and climbed down from the table. Once she was firmly on the ground, she asked in confusion, “How did you know what Huyao likes to eat?”

“That’s because ten years ago, Huyao was a gift this old servant gave to Lord Song.”

She was taken aback. “You gave Huyao to him?”

“Indeed.” The old man nodded and continued, “Ten years ago, a young girl picked up a sick puppy from the street. But her father wouldn’t allow her to keep a hunting dog like that. Seeing her distress, this old servant took the dog in and brought it back to the palace. That’s how it later came to be given to Lord Song.”

Fengguang said in surprise, “I never imagined Huyao was originally given to him by you.”

“Does the Crown Princess find it strange that this old servant and Lord Song don’t seem to have any connection?”

“A little…” she admitted.

The old man lowered his gaze, lost in memory. “In fact, ten years ago, Lord Song was still a kind-hearted youth—quite different from how he is now, and yet… not all that different either.”
